The Glass Castle Parenting Style In Jeanette Walls’ The Glass Castle, the permissive parenting style is predominantly exemplified by Rex and Rose Mary Walls. Based on the article, permissive parents tend to be very apathetic, have very little responsiveness, and have low standards (Cherry, “The Four Styles of Parenting”). Rose Mary is apathetic towards Jeanette because she is very indifferent over what Jeanette is doing. In The Glass Castle Jeanette says; “I felt a blaze of heat on my right side as I turned to see where it was coming from I realized my dress was on fire” (9). Rose Mary was being alarmingly apathetic by worrying more about her painting than what 3 year old Jeanette was doing in the kitchen. Furthermore, Rex displays little
responsiveness towards the children by choosing insignificant things over them. “He spends more than he earns on booze” (78). In consonance with The Glass Castle and what Brian and Lori said about their dad, it displays how irresponsible Rex is and how irresponsible his children think he is. Finally, Jeanette’s mother Rose Mary, has very low standards for her husbands and most especially towards her children. In The Glass Castle Jeanette mentions “Mom told us we would have to go shoplifting” (111). Rose Mary had low standards for her children and for herself at this moment because she didn’t mind telling her children that the bad decisions and bad examples she was setting for her children had serious consequences. In conclusion, many people may argue that the parenting style is more uninvolved parenting than permissive parenting. However, the permissive parenting style is most exemplified by the Walls’ parents due to them being highly apathetic, having very little responsiveness, and finally having low standards.
The parenting style that most represents Rex and Rosemary Walls in The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls is permissive parenting (Cherry, “The Four Styles of Parenting”). One reason why Jeanette’s parents are permissive parents is that they rarely discipline their children (Cherry). An example for this point is: “I thought Dad would be furious, but he wasn’t. He was sort of quiet… Dad had an arm around each of us,” (61). This show permissive parenting because Rex was not mad that the children burned the abandoned shed, he was just calm and lectured them kindly. Another reason why Rex and Rosemary Walls are considered permissive is because they allow self-regulation (Cherry).
Parenting styles play an huge role in the development of a child. In fact, research has shown that parenting styles can influence a child’s social, cognitive, and psychological growth. Which affects children both in the childhood years, and as an adult. So this brings up the question what is the best parenting styles. I will be talking about some different parenting styles and how I feel about them.
In permissive parenting, the guardians are more of the child’s friends and not a disciplinary figure. Permissive parenting embraces avoiding confrontation and being lenient as the key to success. Imagine a trip to the grocery store. You are walking down the cereal isle and you approach a child screaming because he wants his favorite marshmallow filled cereal, rather than a healthier choice. Fulfilling the child’s want in order to appease the child, rather than being assertive and making a healthier choice is a perfect example. A second contrast of permissive parenting is expectations of education. We saw that in authoritarian parenting an A plus grade is expected. The dissimilarity between parenting techniques would be that a B minus would bring praise in permissive household. This is similar to how I was raised. As a child, my siblings and I were expected to achieve good grades but that did not translate into an A plus on every exam. Our academic achievements were to be considered excellent and praiseworthy even if we brought home a B on a test. In hindsight, if we were to earn a C in a class we could expect some sort of restriction and forced remedial training in that area. Permissive parenting is a style of parenting that yields lower expectations and lenient rules for children. This parenting technique embracing fun and friendship between guardian and the child is believed to foster a positive environment for the child to succeed in
Parenting isn’t all that great. According to Marisa de los Santos, author of Love Walked In;, “No one is ever quite ready; everyone is always caught off guard. Parenthood chooses you. And you open your eyes, look at what you’ve got, say “Oh, my gosh,” and recognize that of all the balls there ever were, this is the one you should not drop. It’s not a question of choice.” (Bongiorno). In the memoir, of The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls, the parents tend to stray away from the ‘normal parenting rules’. According to the Walls, being a parent means toparenting is leave ing your kids to fend for themselves, stealing from them, and letting them have the unlimited freedomletting them do whatever they want. The parents,; Rex and Rose Mary, do treat their kids with somewhat a low sense of decency.
A parent is not only the loving mother who holds you close to her for nine months and then many years, or the dad who plays baseball with you and intimidates his daughter’s dates. It is someone who is there for you from the start, guiding you to the right path of knowledge and teaching you how to stay on the right path independently. A parent does not need to have any biological associations to the child in order to be a parent to them. A parent must have certain characteristics to be rightfully called a parent. For many years psychologists have defined ways to correctly support a child to adulthood for parents all over the world. Some people conclude their practice of parenting their children after the child reaches the age of 18, and some have the duty as a lifelong job. As years pass so do generations and media changes very constantly and plays a factor in how children act and respond to certain stimuli. There was a study done in 2009 and people in Poughkeepsie had answered a poll that revealed overall every age group finds it harder to raise a child in today’s day and age than it had been in previous generations, but the older the parent is, the longer the generation gap would be and that factors in the difficulty of understanding how media works with a child’s psychological set up. What a child watches on a television screen is what the child will imitate through behavior. However, parenting is not a book written by a doctor, parenting is having a family, and creating memories, also ensuring that your children live in a nourishing environment for their emotional, mental, and physical health. The accepted goal of a parent is to ensure that their child or children grow to be mature and able to both support themselves and a f...
A parent’s parenting styles are as diverse as the world we live in today. Nowadays, parents only want what is best for their children and their parenting styles plays a crucial role in the development of children which will in the long run, not only effect the child’s childhood years, but later prolong into their adult life as well.
It can be said for most parents that they want their children to grow up to be successful contributing members of society. Being a parent is a difficult, yet rewarding task. But why do some types of parenting result in juvenile delinquency while others find success. There are four generally recognized parenting styles and are categorized: authoritarian, permissive, neglectful, and authoritative. This essay will break down the various styles, its type(s) of discipline and effectiveness.
Throughout The Glass Castle, the Walls family deals with a variety of events including moving, injury, birth, conflict within the family, and more. Many of those events call into question Jeanette’s parents’, Rosemary and Rex’s, parenting style. It is no secret that Mary and Rex prefer to live a down-to-earth, fly by the seat of their pants kind of life. Yet, even throughout the craziness that is the Walls’ family life, there are often redeeming moments where Rosemary and Rex teach their children life lessons of kindness, curiosity, and decency.
Would you have come out different if your parents used a different parenting style? If you are considered “cool” now could you have come out a nerd if your parents would have used a different parenting style? “Parenting style is one of the primary determinants of your child’s outcome whether he succeeds, achieves, meets the challenges, flounders, gives up, or runs from or fails in handling life.” (6) The purpose of this paper is to describe the outcomes, processes, labor, and techniques of parenting in a psychological point of view. Parenting styles are defined as the “manner in which parents express their beliefs on how to be a good or bad parent.” (4) Each parenting style has its weaknesses and strengths. All parents incorporate love and limit in their style of parenting. There are four different types of parenting styles: authoritarian, permissive, democratic, and uninvolved parents.
With over three hundred million Americans and over six billion people worldwide parenting skills are essential to maintain a healthy society. Parenting involves many aspects and requires many skills. It is a time to nurture, instruct, and correct to develop fundamental skills children will need to be mature, responsible, and contributing adults to a society. There are four commonly identified parenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. Of the four parenting styles, two remain on opposite ends of the parenting spectrum. These two styles; authoritarian, and permissive both have deleterious results that are often visible throughout different developmental stages, such as rebellious behavior. As well each style has its own advantages such as; acceptance by peers with commonality. Child rearing for most parents is an evolving set of skills. It could be said that, with any style of parenting, there is no explicit set of rules for every situation, and what works for one child may not be effective for another.
The style of parenting with which children are raised can profoundly affect their social development, as well as their abilities to deal with life situations as adults. Parents who follow the permissive style of parenting have very few rules, no consistent limits, and more often than not give in to their children.. In a permissive family, the children are in charge.
Diana Baurmind and Alfred Adler have similar categories of parenting styles. Authoritative parenting can be compared to democratic and encouraging. Both of these styles offer love and security of the child. They express the parent is in control, but the parent also respect their child with explaining parental actions in a positive way. Permissive parenting can be compared to over-submissive parenting style. The child is rude, and demanding. The parent usually accepts the child’s behavior. In my opinion, the parent does not want to upset the child, or bother with correcting the behavior, so they will give in by rewarding the child in order to correct the child’s behavior. Authoritarian parenting can be compared to over-coercive parenting. These parents are very strict with children. My father can be compared to this parenting style. There was no reasoning, no communication, and his actions were final. This kind of parenting reminds me of being in the military. Finally, uninvolved parenting can be compared to neglecting parenting. I almost wanted to compare uninvolved to rejecting, but I cannot necessarily say the parent has denied acceptance. The parent is selfish, and does not even provide the bare minimum for their child’s necessities. I can compare this type of parenting from a 16 year old mother from the show Teen Mom’s. Jenelle had her son Andrew at a very young age. After his birth, she was distance and cared more about partying. Her
"Permissive parents are nurturing, warm, and accepting. Their main concerns are to let children express their creativity and individuality and to make them happy (Neal 2000), in the belief that this will teach them right from wrong (Berger 2001). Permissive parents find it hard to set clear limits, provide structure, are inconsistent disciplinarians (Huxley 1998), and reward bad behavior regularly (Dworkin 1997). Children are not pushed to obey guidelines or standards that, even when they do exist, are not enforced (Barakat and Clark 1999)."
This parenting style is very undemanding but also very responsive. Permissive parents tend to shower their children with love and affection and involve themselves in their lives. However, they tend to have few to no rules and limitations and therefore have no expectations for their children. They exert a lax pattern of parenting in which they make relatively few demands, permit their children to freely express their feelings and impulses, do not closely monitor their children’s activities, and rarely exert firm control over their behavior (Shaffer & Kipp, 2013). This type of parenting style is not the most beneficial but also not the most negative. The fact that permissive parents make an effort to be involved is a good sign however, the lack of structure is not entirely the best parenting technique. They seem to focus more on being their child’s friend then being their child’s parent. Because of this, they raise children with less favorable developmental outcomes. Not only are they impulsive and aggressive who come off as rude but they also tend to be spoiled and self centered with very little
Parents and their parenting style play an important role in the development of their child. In fact, many child experts suggest that parenting style can affect a child’s social, cognitive, and psychological development which influence not just their childhood years, but it will also extend throughout their adult life. This is because a child’s development takes place through a number of stimuli, interaction, and exchanges that surround him or her. And since parents are generally a fixed presence in a child’s life, they will likely have a significant part on the child’s positive or negative development (Gur 25).
