Although this are two different stories The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry and The Necklace by G. de Maupassant share some differences and similarities when it comes to theme, symbolism and also characterization. It is very interesting to see how two different stories can also share the same message and tackle topics such as wealth, hypocrisy, family and also social class. In brief summaries, in The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry Della the main character is determined to give her husband a gift for Christmas despite the poverty they in live in. In order for her to afford such a gift she sells her beautiful hair which had always made her look gorgeous. In The Necklace by G. de Maupassant Mathilde Loisel borrows a beautiful diamond necklace from her employer to attend a fancy party. Mathilde loses the necklace and she and her husband have to go into extreme debt to replace it, only to learn later in a confession that the necklace was made out of …show more content…

Della and her husband Jim live a very “dull” life which has almost no happiness at all, other than the fact that thy love each other. On the other hand we have The Necklace which as a symbol in this story it represents the difference between perception and reality. More like how that necklace represented everything for Madam Loisel because it showed wealth (something she always wanted but never had) but at the end it was worthless. She becomes rich one night but then pays the prize of trying to be something she wasn’t. the differences here between the two are the main point of the symbol which is pretending something you are not, and giving all you have even you don't have much to see your loved one happy. The similarity though is money, both stories revolve on this social class issue or social statue which in the case f both stores is being poor and also being sad because they have not material
