Reflection 1

This is a reflective essay that had taken place based on my Professional Practice Experience 3 in the CPU. The reflection is based on the Gibbs Reflective cycle (1988) model. Gibbs model of reflection includes the following: description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan (Gibbs, 1988). The aim of this essay is to discuss the common problem in the clinical practice which is the medication error. I have chosen this particular incident as administering medication is a common responsibility that I will be doing in the fulfilment of being a student nurse and in accordance for the national competency standards for registered nurse (NMC, 2010). Reflection is a tool for assessing the professional actions comes with personal belief and values (Bulman & Schultz, 2013).

If this scenario happens again in real health care set up I am confident what to do which is to follow the standard practice. While the bad points of this experience are my initial reaction, at first I did not take it seriously because where just practising in the laboratory. My reaction should be this is my preparation for my profession and I need to do what is right and within the standards for a competent nurse.

On analysis, the need to ensure the right procedural task is performed, as made by the ANMC competency standards, standards which are needed to follow all the times (ANMC Competency elements). The use of MIMS to identify the information about the drug and have collaborative with the doctor to confirm the correct medication. As a future registered nurse the need to continue to practice and refresh my skills knowledge regarding drug
