Long ago there was a village of people that lived on their own planet. The king of the village was a man named Johnny; he lived with his family in a huge hut. In the middle of the village was a hut where the town goods were kept. The town only survived off of berries, fruits, vegetables. One day Johnny was out picking berries when he saw a giant moose appear out of the trees. He watched the moose slowly walk out and start to eat the tall grass. Johnny had never thought about eating a moose or any living animal, but he had never saw a moose this big and he thought it would feed his entire village.
Hours later, Johnny returned from berry picking and told his family about his idea of killing the moose. His wife thought he was so crazy that she kicked him out of their house. Johnny was so mad, he decided to go to town and tell the people of the village about his idea. When he got

to the village he called a meeting and the 300 villagers were downtown in no time. “I have had an idea.
I would like to find a way to kill a giant moose to feed my people.” said Johnny.
“No! We don’t eat animals! That’s terrible!” yelled a villager from the crowd.
Johnny left the town meeting and stayed in his friend’s hut that was nice enough to let him stay for one night.
The next day Johnny woke up early and started his way toward the berry patch where he saw the moose. While walking through the forest to get to the opening, Johnny had picked up a stick that had a pointy end on it. He figured if he saw the moose he would run at it and spear it to try to kill it.
As he approached the patch he heard something rustle the bushes. As he took another step out stepped the giant moose.
Johnny went into a moment of shock but acted quick. He sprinted at the moose and rammed the spear into its neck, dropping it to the ground. He couldn’t believe it.
He ran all the way back to the village to try to convince someone that the moose would help them survive. When he got to the village he called another meeting. This time the people took longer to show up, some not even
coming. “I have killed the moose and would like all of your help to bring it back to the village,” said Johnny. The people started to talk amongst themselves. “Okay, we will,” yelled a man. Johnny couldn’t believe this, but he had no time to waste. He led the villagers back to where the moose lay dead, and had all of the people help carry it back to the village. Once back to the village they slowly cooked the moose over a huge fire for many hours. When it was done, everyone came up and pulled a little piece of meat off. As everyone ate their piece of meat they were shocked at how good it was and wanted more. Johnny could not believe this and was very happy with himself. He had just been the first man to hunt and had been the man that created hunting.

The strength of the old moose is impressive. On his death march, he nonetheless comes "lurching" and "stumbling" in ponderous and powerful strides to "the pole-fenced pasture''- the edge of civilization. A crowd quickly gathers, a crowd of men and women, old and young - all notable for their insensitivity and lack of respect. They confuse the moose with one of their own domesticated animals, like the cattle or collie or gelded moose or ox, failing to see the nobility and ancient wisdom of this moose from "the purple mist of trees." The scene becomes obscene as men "pry open his jaws with bottles" and "pour beer down his throat." The symbolic crown of thistles hammers home the innocent suffering perpetrated by these giggling and snickering buffoons.
When the storm was over he set out to find his great-grandfathers farm. He found some of the old foundation and the carved name on a tree and knew he was on the family compound of his dreams not terribly far from his soon to be home in the Hemlock tree.
"The Bull Moose" is a poem by one of the great Canadian poets, Alden Nowlan. It is a finely crafted poem by a very talented poet. It reminds us how far away from Nature the lives of ordinary men and women have strayed. This is something common to all of us who live so much our lives in buildings and who so rarely experience Nature in its raw form. Nowlan creates powerful layers of images, and contrasts them in a way to make us feel just how damaging to our minds and souls this separation from Nature has been. His poem is Romantic in the way it tries to remind us of how far we have fallen and how hollow our idea of progress is. Indeed, Nowlan suggests that we may be more of a beast than the moose.
The arrival of winter was well on its way. Colorful leaves had turned to brown and fallen from the branches of the trees. The sky opened to a new brightness with the disappearance of the leaves. As John drove down the country road he was much more aware of all his surroundings. He grew up in this small town and knew he would live there forever. He knew every landmark in this area. This place is where he grew up and experienced many adventures. The new journey of his life was exciting, but then he also had a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach of something not right.
