Death As kids and even adults we have always heard ghost stories and knew that death was lurking around every corner. The poems’ I have chosen for this assignment are Spirts of the Dead, The Messenger, and The Ghost. Each of these poems had a common theme, death. These poets have created stories and ideas to give you nightmares! The devices used in these poems helped the reader understand, feel, and think about death and the afterlife in different perspectives. Devices such as figurative language and imagery make it easy for the poets to get inside the reader’s head and give them chills. To some these are just ghost stories, but to others these are works of pure beauty.

I had never heard of this gothic writer before but now he is one of my favorites to read. Interpreting this poem was much easier than the other two because the meaning seems much clearer. Baudelaire did a great job using various devices when writing this poem. His use of figurative language was used in a way that made the poem make perfect sense without being literal. For example, “Kisses as icy as the moon, and caresses of a snake…”. Baudelaire also set up a good tone and Imagery that gave me chills. Just like the other two the dialect is one more for a darker mind. All the devices used in The Ghost are linking together to make one great poem about death. Like stated before there is great use of figurative language and imagery links to this as well making a good picture for readers. Also, the tone sets the mood for the story that is being told. The Ghost is about the angle of death coming in the night to give the kiss of death like as of a snake to collect a soul. It ends with saying “Others would rule by tenderness over thy life and youthfulness, but I would conquer thee by fright!” In other words, life was tender, but death would be
