At 7:30am, on Wednesday, July 1st, 1863, at the intersection of Knoxlyn Rd and US Rt. 30 Chambersburg Pike, a shot was fired by Lieutenant Marcellus Jones. This shot would not be forgotten, as it was the beginning of what would turn into one of the biggest turning points of the Civil War; The Battle of Gettysburg. This three day streak of combat would later be referred to as the “High Water Mark of the Rebellion.” With the outcome being an overall Union victory, the Battle of Gettysburg would mark the point at which the Union would place the Confederacy on the defensive and end General Robert E. Lee’s most ambitious attempt to seize Union territory. The Battle of Gettysburg was so critical, in fact, that it lead to one of the most vital documents written in United States history, the Gettysburg Address. How exactly did this battle guide President Abraham Lincoln to write the Gettysburg Address is a common question among many.
New fashions were surfacing in both men’s and women’s fashions. Men were wearing Bermuda pants, baggy pants that were cut off at the knee, while women were wearing capris, tight pants that cut off just below the knee. Men were wearing tailored jackets and making a slight move towards the casual dress of today’s workplace. Women were wearing natural shoulders as opposed to the heavily padded ones of the war years. Flat, neck-hugging collars replaced the mannish collars of the late 1940’s. Waists were tightly fitted and skirts were long (Melinkoff 46). The jeans of the time were often lined with plaid flanel and dungarees were worn to the most casual occasions. The sandals of the fifties were not much different than the sandals of today.

The costumes, like Elizabethan clothing, were very intricate and probably took more time than that of modern fashions. Everything appears to be tied up or pinned together and to a modern onlooker it could appear as overdone and overdressed. In the movie, actresses Gweneth Paltrow and Judi Dench reveals that the feminine garments normally consisted of at least two parts: bodice and skirt, along with the undergarments.
Do you love fashion, food, and sports? During the Elizabethan Era these things were a little different then what it is today. People who have seen a play from the Elizabethan know that the fashion has changed. Back in the Elizabethan Era time women mostly wore gowns, hats, corsets, and shoes. The corset was not meant to draw in the waist and not create an hourglass figure; rather it was designed to mold the torso in a cylindrical shape, and to flatten and raise the bustline. As for the men, they wore ruffs, hats, doublets, and shoes. The ruff which evolved from the small fabric ruffle at the drawstring neck of the shirts was worn by the men. Native Americans clothing differed from men to women, as they do today, but the style varies tremendously (Native American Clothing, n.d.). The men’s everyday clothing was simple and only covered their front and back side by a piece of cloth, which was held up by a belt ( Native Languages of the Americas, n.d.). This piece of clothing is called a breechclout ( Native Languages of the Americas, n.d.). When the weather turned cold, additional clothing was added to cover their legs and was made out of leather ( Native Languages of the Americas, n.d.). Women’s clothing varied from dresses to skirts with a pair of leggings, as well as being topless ( Native Languages of the Americas, n.d.). However, due to relocation, the typical Native American clothing were replaced with “appropriate” period attire. This change of attire can be seen clearly in the movie. At the beginning of the movie, pictures were shown of American Indians arriving in their traditional clothing (Morris, Chino, & Kruzic, 2003). Then, other pictures were shown of Native Americans in clothing related to the time period (Morris, Chino, & Kruzic, 2003).
