Since the beginning of days, the fight between the goodness and hatred, bravery and cowardice, and benevolence and evil has always existed. The frivolity of evil written by Theodore Dalrymple argues about the existence of evil among us, questions the reasons of its flourish and the reason why we commit evil. He begins his article by informing his audience of his career as a physician in a prison’s hospital where he treated several criminals. He also expressed his passion of treating the poor people because, according to him, treating the poor is more compelling and florid. He witnessed, in Equatorial Guinea, the tyranny of a dictator who kills any person who wore glasses or any person caught with a page with printed matter for being a potentially disaffected intellectual. He also supports the evolve of political evil in other countries like Liberia and North Korea: where the citizens of these countries are either getting murdered or terrorized by their own leaders. At some point, Dalrymple thought that his home country, Britain, had fled from the evil of political deformations and their consequences. He says “I optimistically supposed that, in the absence of the worst political deformations, widespread evil was impossible. I soon discovered my error. Isobelle Carmody does make use of some traditional fantasy elements in The Gathering but the departure from rigid archetypes is what enables her to achieve a sophisticated exploration of the oft-stereotyped concept of evil. She is able to effectively do this not just by the traditional good vs evil but by the dark side of human nature and mankind. To achieve this she uses Mr Karl the deputy principle at Three North in Cheshunt where this novel is based. However she hasn’t just gone and changed how traditional fantasy operate. She has used a good balance of both traditional and modern ways of getting messages out to the readers.
The battle of good versus evil is present in all aspects of life. Actions taken by people can determine how others view them. Some choose to do what is right and good, while others choose what is wrong and evil. Many characters are forced to choose between the two, and some do not foresee the consequences of their actions. In the book Peace Like a River by Leif Enger, actions committed by the Davy, Jeremiah, and Jeremiah’s friends, both good and evil, always have consequences.
Claudia Card begins by questioning the difference between wrong and evil. How do we know when something crosses the line between being just wrong, to being an evil act? In Zora Neale Hurston’s short story “Sweat” the author not only focuses on portraying different gender roles but also focuses on the theme of good versus evil within the marriage of Sykes and Delia. Written during the American Romanticism period, “The Devil and Tom Walker,” by William Irving, personifies the belief in the primacy of imagination. The period of Romanticism in America is often seen as the crucial period of American culture, as it was the central movement of the Renaissance period that moved into a more free-feeling and artistic approach to literature. American Gothic literature made its early appearance with William Irving, first with “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” in 1820, and carrying over to “The Devil and Tom Walker” in 1824, both of which use a macabre approach to establish a moral ending (Matterson). Told by a narrator known as Geoffrey Crayon, “The Devil and Tom Walker” takes on the tone of a legend or tall tale as the story describes the life of a greedy money lender by the name of Tom Walker, who sales his soul to the devil to gain wealth. Irving ultimately uses literary elements such as symbolism and character development, as well as including themes such as greed and hypocrisy to establish a moral to the corrupt man’s tale.

The following analysis deals with the nature and source of evil and whether, given our innate motives and moral obligation, we willingly choose to succumb to our desires or are slaves of our passion. From this argument, I intend to show that our human nature requires that we play into our desires in order to affirm our free will. This is not to say that our desires are necessarily evil, but quite the opposite. In some sense, whatever people actually want has some relative value to them, and that all wanted things contain some good. The Devil’s Disciple by George Bernard Shaw In the melodrama The Devils Disciple by George Bernard Shaw, Judith Anderson is the only character that becomes a ‘changed’ person at the end of the play. At first glance, the two main characters Richard Dudgeon and Anthony Anderson seem to be the characters that undergo a character exchange. But as we study the play in greater detail, we are able to explore the significant changes Shaw has intentionally inflicted in Judith Anderson, to convey the theme of ‘appearance and reality’.
