Religion is a constant in every society, in many cases, it was created to help understand the things that cannot have been explained and to give them hope as to what happened after they died. However, not all societies had the same religious beliefs. Which is why religion had different impacts in the societies, in some cases religion was the biggest part of their lives and in some places, such as the United States of America, religion is not necessarily part of everyone’s life. If religion is something that the individual devotes their life to it does not have to be the same religion of the person who lives down the street. Nonetheless, it is still around and during the French revolution, Crusades and the Reformation it had a major impact on the daily lives of the people in the country. The Crusades usually thought to be just one single war. The definition of a crusade is “a holy war”, so when taking a look back at history there were 6 crusades that happened. But, the major one was between the Christians and the Muslims. This lead to a bitterness between the two, which to this day has not yet been resolved. The main goal of the …show more content…
Crusades was to reclaim Jerusalem and reunite Christianity, although kings would use the crusades to send away knight who causes trouble and the merchants gained wealth during the crusade through trade. During the first and second crusade, the Pope promise the crusaders who die in the battle a place in heaven. This allowed them to sin all they wanted as long as they would fight in the war. Which was not the only way that the Crusade changed the life of the people. The Crusades showed the power of the church in convincing thousands of people to fight, the failure weakened the pope and nobles but strengthened the kings. Nevertheless, all the change were not all bad merchants expanded trade and brought back many products from Southwest Asia, the women who stay home now manage the estate and business affairs. But, the Crusades were not the only event that religiously impacted the country. The Reformation was also a time period when religion dramatically impacted the society.
Martin Luther protested over the abuses in the Catholic church and challenged the authority of the church. During the reformation, the church was known for selling the indulgences, where they would pay for forgiveness from their sins. Which gave the rich upper-class people the ability to sin all they wanted because all they had to do was pay the church and their sins would have been forgotten. While the lower class or peasants of the country could not have that luxury because of the limited amount of money they had. Luther decided that he would teach that people could win salvation by good work and faith, instead of buying indulgences, also the Christian teachings must be based on the bible, not the pope, mainly because the popes were poorly
educated. Religion was always part of societies and will probably always continue to be. But from time to time the impact can be greater than at other times. Like during the Crusades and the French Revolution and many other times, which is something that will continue to happen unless people take into account the events that happened in the past and prevent them from happening again.
Martin Luther is known to be a key initiator to the Protestant Reformation, although he had no intention of doing so. He was going to become a monk, so he read deeply into scriptures, but this only led him to discover inconsistencies between traditions and the Bible. These inconsistencies lead him to demand changes in the Catholic Church; however that did not include
Martin Luther desired to reform the Church because he believed that it was corrupt and wanted to be seen as the gateway to Heaven. In Luther’s eyes, the Roman Catholic Church was teaching the wrong things and showing bad behavior. Because of this, Martin Luther, being a conscientious friar and professor of theology, did not feel secure in the idea of salvation. The Church was teaching that salvation came through faith AND good works while Luther concluded
Martin Luther, was “temperamental, peevish, egomaniacal, and argumentative” (Hooker, www.wsu.edu), but played a pivotal role in history. During Luther's time as a monk, the Catholic Church was selling indulgences. Luther took notice to the corruption and began to reason that men can only get their salvation through Jesus Christ, not the Pope or indulgences, let alone the Church itself. Luther began ...
The crusades in the middle ages were a long-lasting series of vigorous wars between Christians and Muslims over the Holy Land, Jerusalem. The crusades lasted for almost two hundred years. They began in 1099 and approximately ended in 1291. (What were the motives, and causes of these gruesome wars?) is the first question one might ask. To properly answer this question, I am about to analyze the first four crusades that had began in 1099 and ended in 1212.
The crusades were soldiers that would fight battles against other religions. The people who would sign up their sins would be forgiven. The crusades were a series of holy wars and they . Many people lost their lives fighting the wars and a lot of their lands were destroyed. There were more negative results then positive results because lots of people died and most their land was ruined. The crusades results were mostly negative because they would fail most of their goals. They left a bitter legacy on religious hatred. Also Christians and muslims would commit crimes of the name of religion and would be attacked by other religions.
The Crusades were an outlet for the intense religious tension between the Muslims and the church which rose up in the late 11th century. This all started because the church and the Catholics wanted the Holy Lands back from the Muslims. Around this time the church was the biggest institute and people were god-fearing. Pope Gregory VII wanted to control more lands and wanted to get back the lands that they had lost to the Muslims (Medieval Europe). So in order to get back these lands he launched The Crusades which he insisted to the peasants was a holy war instead.
Martin Luther was a friar very devoted to the Church but after analyzing all these aspects he decided to do something about it. On October 31, 1517 he attached to the door of Wittenberg Castle a list of 95 theses or propositions on indulgences. These theses criticized papal policies and were objections about he church put on hold for discussion.
Definition: The medieval "Crusade" was a holy war. In 1095, Pope Urban II proclaimed the First Crusade with the goal of restoring Christian access to holy places in Jerusalem.
This revolted Luther because he believed that salvation was not achieved by good works or indulgences but by faith alone. The ideology that every individual is equal in the eyes of God and that the pope is not superior to these individuals. Most of the population felt these beliefs spoke in their favor and therefore demanded freedom from their overlords, which caused severe consequences. As a result, leaders and popes tried to stop Martin and his message, since it opposed the Church’s teachings. In the end, they unfairly took away his privilege of
People started to see the logic in his words and they started to break away from the Catholic church and in the process starting the protestant reformation. In his theses Luther believed that Faith not good deeds could save a person. People were convinced when they were told that if they pay so much money that their loved ones would be able to get out of purgatory and make it to heaven. Indulgences such as this was one of the major things that made Martin Luther so angry and adamant of writing his 95 theses because he wanted to see a change in the Catholic
The ultimate goal of The Crusades was to take back the Holy Land from the Muslim's, the followers of Islam. Mohammad gained quite a following and with that a considerable amount of power, even his military forces by which he used to conquer the Christian holy land. This wasn't a single escapade but a series of crusades
His harsh words proved his opposition to the church, “…We shall have power and authority so that the entire community shall choose and appoint a minister.” Luther also stated that the taxes should not be given to the Catholic Church, but rather gathered through our Church elders. This shows us that in the eyes of Martin Luther, that the Church should not have to much power, and that all Christians are equal in the eyes of god. Luther’s doctrines essentially led to the Peasant rebellion, as the Peasants hated being enslaved and taken advantage of. The Peasants figured that the only way to end the suffering was to side with Martin Luther’s Doctrines. Due to the Peasants support of Martin Luther’s doctrines, they worked together to Rebel against the Catholic
The Crusades were great military missions embarked on by the Christian nations of Europe for the purpose of rescuing the Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the hands of the Moslems. The Crusades were considered Holy Wars (1). Their main target was the Moslems not the Jews, although campaigns were also waged against pagan Slavs, Jews, Russian and Greek orthodox Christians, Mongols, Cathars, Hussites, Waldensians Old Prussians, and political enemies of the popes (2). There were many Crusades some more significant than others, but in general the Crusades was an important event in the history of Medieval Europe.
Throughout the course of history, man has looked to religion for answers. Curiosity as to how we got here and why we are have driven people to seek out answers to these somewhat unanswerable questions. Over the past few thousand years, several varying religions have been established, some more prominent than others. Many of them share a similar story of a divine creator who has always been and will always be. In the case of Christianity, whether true or not, it has proven to be beneficial to society as a whole. The Bible set the standard for the moral compass that humans live their lives by to this day. The key fundamental problem with religion, although not the fault of religion, is that man has often used it as a gateway to power and prominence. In the case of the 18th century Gallican church, the French were abusing their religious powers, thus creating vast inequality throughout France, which eventually led to a rebellion against the church, and the eventual destruction of the church within France.
According to Martin Luther, "every man must do two things alone; he must do his own believing and his own dying." Martin changed the way people viewed their religion and the churches. He believed in the separation of church and state, he also believed people could ask for forgiveness from God themselves. Furthermore, he thought the church couldn’t forgive your sins; it was only God who could. While overall, starting the Protestant Reformation.
