This free bird will take you back to sweet home alabama. In the 1970s lynyrd skynyrd (pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd) was one of the most successful rock band.
The name was the school basketball of coach he died at 77. His name was Leonard Skinner he died 6 years ago on september 20 2010. They got the name when their basketball coach sent them to the principle for having their hair too long. They were originally going to go call it Leonard Skinnerd but then changed to to the more distinctive spelling to what it is now.

The band has a catalog of more than 60 albums and they became one of the most popular bands. With 30,000,000 sold world wide. The song sweet home alabama hit the #8 spot in 1974 that was on there second album.
Some people consider lynyrd skynyrd racist. Only because he use the confederate flag as a backdrop and they say that “in birmingham they love the governor” . The confederate flag is not racist. In sweet home alabama they use “in birmingham the love the governor” and the governor was a segregationist and birmingham was a place that a church was bombed killing 4 african americans. Okay I understand why some people might consider that racist. But think about it this was how long ago was the bombing and when was that man governor?
Lynyrd Skynyrd wasn’t the only band in the 1970’s. There were lots of other bands such as rush, ac dc,queen,bee gees,kansas,and chicago. And they had lots of differences. Lynyrd skynyrd was more of a southern rock hint the confederate flag and alabama. Rush and ac dc are more heavy metal bands. Unlike lynyrd skynyrd there official genre boogie rock and southern rock. Queen is more of a partially calm band still rock but partially calm. Lynyrd skynyrd not so calm. Bee gees was pure disco. No disco for lynyrd skynyrd none at all! Chicago is calm for the most part. Again there were lots of competition like scorpions, george thorogood and the destroyers, and europe. The Scorpions were really loud and heavy metal. Lynyrd skynyrd is kinda like the scorpions because they were loud and he is loud for the most part. George thorogood and the destroyers are very loud just like scorpions. Lynyrd skynyrd is like george thorogood because they are both loud. Europe is a calm band for the most part. Lynyrd skynyrd is the complete opposite of europe.
Skynyrd was around in the 1990’s but the bands in the 1990’s don't even hold a candle to what skynyrd did. 1990’s was more of a rap/hip-hop age rather than like 1970’s 1980’s so like I said earlier you can even compare the bands of the 1990s to skynyrd. Skynyrd was so good is why you can't even compare the bands of the 1990’s.
