There were four major causes of WWI: alliances, militarism, imperialism and nationalism, but nationalism was the most significant cause that triggered the war because it mobilized the three other causes into action. Alliances are formed when countries bond together against a common threat, and pledge to support each other. Since there were only two alliances, when one was attacked, the alliances are forced to help. Alliances were made long before the war. The earliest alliance made was 1875, Germany and Austria – Hungary, while the latest made was in 1907, Russia and Britain.
