Jon Bielecki once said “Your circle of influence dictates your future.” This means that what influences us can affect our identities and ultimately change our futures and lives. People create identities based on themselves but ultimately their identities are affected by our environments and the people we associate with. In short story “The Follower” the narrator tries to fit in with his neighbors. After watching his neighbor, Frankie, willingly torture himself at his brother, Gary’s, expense, the narrator wants to fit in and be like his neighbor. The narrator says in the story “Within a week I was Frankie's man, which was pretty scary because he was Gary’s man.” The narrator is shown in the story as a boy with nothing to do. Then he meets his neighbors, Frankie and Gary. Gary tortures Frankie, and …show more content…
Stanley Williams was a fatherless boy who lived in Los Angeles. His mother worked several jobs and he was often alone. The article states, “Williams was bullied by some older boys in his neighborhood so by the age of twelve he began to carry around a knife to protect himself.” Williams also had to provide for himself to a certain extent, “...Williams regularly participated in these fights; the adults would bet on him and he would get part of the winnings if he won.” This dangerous environment turned Williams into a gangster. He co-founded the “Crips” gang and was eventually executed for murder. Stanley Williams had to carry a knife around for protection at the age of twelve. For any regular child that would be preposterous but for young Williams this was probably quite normal. Williams was also quite poor and had to provide for himself sometimes despite his mother working several low paying jobs. Williams participated in fights with other children to earn money. He obviously did not live in a very good environment and was affected
People use the word okay nearly every day. It is a word that everyone knows and uses due to its vast meanings. To be okay, is what Gary D. Schmidt’s novel Okay for Now really tries to get readers to understand. He poses the question: just what does “okay for now” mean? These answers are found through examining the characters in the store. While, okay can mean many different things, being okay means that the person is in a state where while things are not perfect, but they are tolerable and satisfactory and can improve.
Being a bad influence is a lot like being a daisy in a sunflower field. In order to get what they want, they both spread everywhere. Spreading the bad idea and seed throughout. Throughout time peers and ourselves have influenced us to want money or just to seem cool.
With no father figure in his life and a broken home, Kody turned to the streets in search of love and security. He became good friends with a guy by the name of “Tookie” Williams. Williams just so happened to be an early leader of the Crips, a notorious Los Angeles gang. The more Kody hung out with Tookie, the more respect he had for the gang’s power of authority and at the young age of 11 he was initiated into the 83 Gangster Crips (Kody, 2008). When someone is initiated into a gang they are “beat in” meaning they get beat up by 5 or 6 men for a certain length of time (usually around 30 seconds). Right after joining the gang he helped steal a car and shot and killed many rival gang members in a drive by shooting (Kody, 2008). When Kody was 13 years old, he robbed and beat a victim so bad that the police called it the “work of a monster,” which is where he got his nick name (Kody, 2008).
The influence of the people around you has a great impact on your life. In In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez and in Journey to Jihad by Ben Taub, radicalization is due to the influences of others. Minerva’s rebellion was caused by both Sinita and Trujillo. Patria’s rebellion was caused by the influences of Minerva and the Church. Jeojen’s radical actions were due to his girlfriend, as well as his neighbor. Minerva, Patria, and Jeojen all epitomize the significance of influential people within one’s life.
The deaths per year done by guns, 80% of them are gang related. If I Grow Up, written by Todd Strasser shows the life of a male kid growing up in the projects in Chicago. DeShawn wanted didn’t want to join the gang and stay in school. But his family didn’t have money or food. His friend that was in the gang had a bunch of money. So DeShawn joined the gang because in school they didn’t teach them much, and the money that his family got was a lot more of it when he got in the gang. I think that DeShawn had a choice not to join the gang because he could get a job, could have gotten a better education, and other people have gotten out of the projects.
This can be connected to the Crips and the Bloods by the similar treatment the African Americans receive compared to the roughnecks. This recognition as being a roughneck makes it much more difficult to get a job, and escape the society they are currently in.... ... middle of paper ... ... Anderson discusses the code of the streets and how this set of rules and norms dictates how people behave in South Las Angeles and gives rise to organized gang violence.
“The Rattler” is a story that is written by Donald Beattie that expresses a survival and protective tone to persuade readers to side with the man that killed the snake in order to protect a larger community of animals and humans. Beattie is presenting the story to a large group of people in attempt to persuade them. Beattie uses imagery, simile, and pathos to develop a root of persuasion and convince the audience to reanalyze the man’s actions.
Gangs have been in existence since the beginning of the Roman Empire. There were speeches made by Roman orator, Marcus Tullius Cicero, which references groups of men who constantly fought and disrupted Roman politics (Curry, 2013). The history of street gangs in the United States begins with their emergence on the East Coast around 1783, as the American Revolution ended. Though many believe the best available evidence suggests that the more serious street gangs likely did not emerge until the early part of the nineteenth century (Sante, 1991). Although our country has had their share of feared gangs like in the 1980’s with the turf war between the Bloods and Crips, back in the 17th and 18th century the Mohocks of Georgian, England were one of the most feared gangs. What draws juveniles to the gang lifestyle? Many people will say that most gang members are children from impoverished communities, single family homes where there was no father present, or maybe there is a more psychological/sociological answer? By appearance and presence most gangs cause fear, crime, and disillusionment in the communities they occupy. Throughout history joining a gang has been perceived as a life without any reward, yet by joining this lifestyle many juveniles are able to gain the needed stability and security in their lives.
How Influence Can Change a Person As someone once said…. “Sometimes people come into your life for a moment, a day, or a lifetime. It matters not the time they spent with you but how they impacted your life in that time.” – Unknown.
Everyone had influenced by their surrounding. Your personal identities and choices in life are based on the role of the relationship you have with others. This helps you to realize who you are and what you need in the life. The combination of all you learns come together to give you a clear idea of what your needs, values, and belief in this life. Finally, it is clear that the role of relationship play an important role in the framework of our personal identities.
In today's world, society creates an impact on human life. More of an impact can be seen among family and peers. They can be found at home, work, and school. At home with family, identity can be created on the difference of having one parent, divorced or separated parents, no parents, abusive parents, or even negligent parents. For example, children who grow up without a father or mother figure tend to become more independent at an early stage. Another example is where certain experiences within the family such as constantly witnessing parents argue can cause one's identity to be confined and distant. But, some people shape their identity similar to their parents. Such as a son became a soldier in the army because his father was in the army. Siblings, if any, are also an influence on the social identity of a person. They either become your friend, mentor, or you...
Young people may get pure pressured by their friends into joining a gang. Furthermore, numerous young people join street gangs because they feel they are rejected by society and do no have the same values. Having faced either physical and/or sexual maltreatment, young people who are maltreated tend to have impaired physical and emotional social functions. References Bell, K. E. (2009; 2007).
A person’s identity is shaped by many different aspects. Family, culture, friends, personal interests and surrounding environments are all factors that tend to help shape a person’s identity. Some factors may have more of an influence than others and some may not have any influence at all. As a person grows up in a family, they are influenced by many aspects of their life. Family and culture may influence a person’s sense of responsibilities, ethics and morals, tastes in music, humor and sports, and many other aspects of life. Friends and surrounding environments may influence a person’s taste in clothing, music, speech, and social activities. Personal interests are what truly set individuals apart. An individual is not a puppet on the string of their puppet-master, nor a chess piece on their master’s game board, individuals choose their own paths in life. They accomplish, or strive to accomplish, goals that they have set for themselves throughout their lifetime. Individuals are different from any other individual in the world because they live their own life rather than following a crowd of puppets. A person’s identity is defined by what shaped it in the first place, why they chose to be who they are, and what makes them different from everybody else in the world. I feel that I have developed most of my identity from my own dreams, fantasies, friends, and idols.
The different aspects or contexts of your life, such as your family, friends, and school, influence who you are, and help shape your identity. Typically, your family impacts the way you think, the way you feel, and how you interact or treat people. This is because your parents, or other extended family members, teach you right from wrong, and set rules and expectations for you. Your family also influences your beliefs, ethics, values, and morals, due to the culture and traditions you grow up around. The other people you surround yourself with, such as friends, have a huge impact on your personality, interests and behavior. Most likely, you will start to act and like the same things as your friends. It’s human nature to imitate what we see.The
Throughout our life, we encounter different kinds of people. Although most people around us are strangers who we do not know their names, sometimes they may make a deep impression on us due to their actions as well as attitude towards life. Some people are influenced by the family, friends, and teachers because they are someone who we spend a lot of time with. As for me, when I was ten, I met an ordinary worker who was quite strange to me, and she had a profound influence on my life.
