Being a bad influence is a lot like being a daisy in a sunflower field. In order to get what they want, they both spread everywhere. Spreading the bad idea and seed throughout. Throughout time peers and ourselves have influenced us to want money or just to seem cool. The story “The Follower” by Jack Gantos the nameless narrator’s identity is influenced by the reckless neighbors Scary Gary and his brother Frankie Pagoda to seem cool. Seeing Frankie fly across his yard the narrator says “ I was different from Frankie but still, the first moment I saw him in pain, it occurred to me that I wanted to be in pain, too. After his mom argued with to never play with Frankie or Scary Gary. He replies with “ why I asked. He’s a neighbor that will probably
be a friend”. His mom then calls him follower, not a leader but the narrator denies it even though he knows he is. The narrator starts as a bored normal kid, but when he sees Frankie fly through the air he wants to be like him. The narrator wants to change his identity because of the excitement he thinks he will get. He wants to be like Frankie so much he defends Frankie against his mother so he can be friends with Frankie. Even though the narrator knows he is follower he denies it from his mom. This one way identities are created by others but their are several different ways. The article “Stanley Williams” by th commonlit staff Stanley gets in fights and gangs to get money and power. Adults would organize kids to fight “William participated in these fights regularly; the adults would bet on him and give him a part of the winnings”. Williams purposely got into street fights to get money. With winning these fights it is also giving Stanley power and more credibility. As Stanley grows up “By the time William was a teenager, he had developed a reputation as a vicious street fighter”. With this credibility Stanley is able to get respect and power in those parts. Maybe also a lot of money with winning a lot of street fights. Changing your identity is one way to get money to deal with your environment. We create our own identities in order to get money or to seem cool. We do this to deal with our environment to fit in. In the follower the narrator changes his identity to seem cool with Scary Gary and Frankie. Also with Stanley Williams, Stanley changes his identity to get money and power in the neighborhood. What have you done in your life to change it?
“I have had a happy life and thank the Lord. Goodbye and may God bless all!”(199), these were the last words of Chris McCandless in a picture with him smiling and waving good-bye. Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer is an extension of an article first published in Outside magazine. In the book, Krakauer further explains the journey of Chris McCandless, while providing his own insight to provide the reader a better understanding of the McCandless reasoning. McCandless lived a nomadic life after he graduated from college, traveling from South Dakota to Mexico. However, his two year journey proved fatal when he took a trip to Alaska, his greatest undertaking. Among his remains several books were discovered, including a copy of Walden by Henry D. Thoreau
In “The Weekend,” George cheats on Lenore with Sarah, and she still chooses to stay with him and work out their issues. The story by Ann Beattie can relate to “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin because Edna cheats on Leonce with Robert and Alcee Arobin. After learning Edna cheats on him, Leonce decides to stay with Edna to work their relationship out. While nothing is wrong with their significant others, they cheat because something in them is unfulfilled. Lenore knows George cheats because he spends much of his time with the other women, but she never acknowledges it, until she talks with Julie one day; “she’s really the best friend I’ve ever had. We understand things—we don’t always have to talk about them. ‘Like her relationship with George,’
It has become evident, more so in our day and age, that children often feel burdened by the expectations that one’s parents have. Blinded by their own pretences, parents pressure their children to follow a path which they themselves think is best. As seen in “The Boat” by Alistair MacLeod, the narrator endures a tremendous amount of pressure from his parents. In comparison to my own life, my parents also put a lot of pressure on me because they want me to be successful. However, I find that the pressure exerted by my parents onto me is not helpful at all. To start, pressure often leads to stress, which then leads to long term complications such as anxiety and depression. Ever since I was young, my parents have wanted me to pursue a career in medicine. I was not very happy as it was not a field that I found
In the story, “My Favorite chaperone” The author, Jean Davies Okimoto portrays many themes. The one that I found that fit this story best was that if you help out others than they are most likely to return it when you need it the most. The protagonist or main character in the story is Maya, a student at Beacon Junior High who moved to America with her family. They moved from Kazakhstan and now live in an apartment. The main conflict is that Maya can’t go to the dance because “Mama” thinks as stated on page 5 “Mama says she thinks the school is strange to have parties and events after school when students should be doing their homework. When Nurazahn is in school he is bullied, but he gets tired of it and gets in a fight. Maya rewords the principles
“Wallflowers” by Donna Vorreyer is a piece that truly makes one ponder over the slightest things the average human being overlooks every day. When one typically hears the word wallflower, one tends to think of those people standing on the wall at a party, just minding their own business. They do not say much, rather they stand around and take in all that is going on around them. It is seldom that they are noticed because they are so quiet and shy that they keep to themselves, but they still hold onto those hopes that the light will shine on them one day. Every person needs at least a bit of attention from someone every once in a while, whether they like to accept the fact or not. Therefore, the moral of the poem is that everyone has a place where they belong in this world; whether it be with those that pretend
Only Stephen King could write such a spellbinding tale of a bunch of boys doing nothing but walking.
However, by the end of the poem it is his father who needs help from
People define being influential as having someone or something looking up to you. Another way people define being influential is having control over something. Influence can be used in many ways, it can be used to make you buy something, or it can make you think different, it can also be used to help encourage people. Most of the time famous people are influential to the lower tier an example would be a professional baseball player would be a big influence to someone who is just starting out, or an popular actor influential too. Although some people say that having much influence is bad because it can make you become greedy with power but, Stan Lee proves that wrong by using his influence to help to other people in his life.

Jon Bielecki once said “Your circle of influence dictates your future.” This means that what influences us can affect our identities and ultimately change our futures and lives. People create identities based on themselves but ultimately their identities are affected by our environments and the people we associate with.
It is perpetuated by the way wealth, power, and prestige are distributed and passed on from one generation to the next
n chapter 8, the nursers finally gave in and let me and Two-Bit see Johnny, but right in the middle of our conversation Johnny suddenly passed out and the nursers rushed in and kicked me out. Johnny’s mother came by as well but of course after all that she has put him through he refused to see her. After me and Two-Bit had to leave Johnny we went to see Dallas . He was really excited to see us and told us how he wanted to get out and how the nursers wouldn’t let him smoke a cigarette . Dallas also gave us a talk on how we need to win the rumble tonight and Two-Bit also gave Dallas his prized possession : his switchblade . My family has influenced the way I see the world by creating an environment that encouraged certain behaviors or actions considered positive and quickly disciplined and corrected any considered negative. With a knowledge of acceptable and improper behaviors, my own moral guideline was created, allowing me to judge the character of others and choose the personalities I wished to surround myself with. The interactions with these people caused me to cultivate particular personality traits, these personality traits then influenced the development of my pervasive principles of influence. It is the development of these pervasive principles of influence that fundamentally define my perception of others, as well as largely direct most future interactions.
As one of the significant literary figures of the twentieth century, Samuel Beckett left his mark on literature with his unique contribution ranging from prose to poetry. Although Beckett's oeuvre has been subject to innumerable analysis from divergent perspectives and various approaches, screen adaptations of his stage plays are unfortunately neglected, and thereby less scrutinized.
