The Signifying Monkey is an embodiment of the poor man’s values and dreams: He is weak and only has his speaking skills (slang ‘mouthpiece’) to survive on, and he uses it to play the powers of the jungle against one another. The same way a pimp survives on his ‘mouthpiece’ by using fast talk, sweet talk, jive, and jaw-blockin’.

“I know what I am about”, said Monkey. (Wu 18). Right after he became Tripitaka’s disciple, he killed a tiger for its skin so he can use it as his coat. This resembles all the times when he lived lavishly as the “Handsome Monkey King”. In a way, it looks like he’s trying to look better to make it up for his physical appearance because he became self-conscious when people in the village called him a monster and ran away from him. However, his selfish actions changes in the middle of the story. “You were kind enough yesterday to introduce my Master into the house and we owe it to you that we have found a new disciple.” After Monkey helped Mr.Kao and his daughter get away from Pigsy, he collected the broken pieces of gold and silver for Mr.Kao. He learned how to reject gifts and how to thank people by learning from Tripitaka. In The Challenge of Ignorance by Finn Jensen, he talked about the difficulty of manufacturing integrated circuits. “We need to expand our sum of knowledge.” (Jensen 1). He admitted that he and his team are ignorant however, it’s not a positive or a negative factor but it is a challenge that they have to learn how to overcome. It may be two different situations in both of the stories, but the results are the same thing – learn how to expand one’s knowledge. Monkey’s actions at first can be seen as selfish because back when he was a Monkey King, he basically got all the

The ship was being tossed by angry waves. The whole crew and captain had deserted their ship only to perish to the sea. The only ones remaining on board was the Robinson family. When the storm was over, they discussed about how to get to shore. After much thinking, they built a sort of raft big enough for the family of six, taking with them things that could be of use. Once on shore, they began to search for food and made up somewhere to sleep. The next day, Father and the eldest son, Fritz, went into the forest to explore the island further. They found food like sugar cane, potatoes, and figs. Father, Fritz and two other sons, Ernest and Jack, built a sort of tree house for the family to sleep. Father and Fritz went back to the wreck for supplies and took with them all the animals they had left on board. The two dogs, which they named Juno and Turk, would be guard dogs, the cow would be good for milk, the sheep for wool, the donkey for travel and the chickens for eggs. The family soon learned that there were other animals on land for they had to hunt for food. There were penguins, lobsters, oysters, agouti, monkeys, and jackals. Fritz took a baby monkey and named him Knips and Jack took a young jackal, who he named Fangs. Mother planted roots for lemon, apple, and pear trees.
