The history of the movie industry dates from the early 19th century. Film or what is also known as movies came to be one of the most common forms of communication and entertainment in the modern world. The first machine for the production of film was made in the United States. The machine was known as the wheel of life or the zoopraxiscope. The machine was made by William Lincoln and it let people watch pictures through an opening in the machine, but this has been updated over the years to the complicated video cameras we have today (Hampton). Louise Lumiere discovered the earliest motion pictures in 1895. This was an important discovery in the film industry. It made the discovery of a portable motion picture camera, a film-processing compartment, …show more content…
Porter advanced film editing. He was responsible for editing films like the American Firefighter and the First Movie Western. The films were important to movie editing (Everson). In 1908 over 10,000 movies had been produced in the United States. Edison led to the creation of the first patented film company. The company made a ton of money by intimidating the competitors with sound effects and editing (Hendricks). The film industry kept growing over the years. The movies ran for a period of ten minutes. The time was based on the producer’s thoughts of the audience and if they liked it or not. The Story of the Kelly Gang is known as the world’s first regular length movie. The film ran for 80 minutes. However, Europe quickly made multiple-reel films that were over 80 minutes long. The longer movies and better editing were the key points that led to the modern day film we have (Allen). Movies from Italy and France were dominating the movie industry. The United States industry was also growing until the World War disrupted the progresses made in the industry. In the1920s, the United States made what has come to be known as the greatest output of the filming industry to be recorded. In this period, the United States produced over 800 films annually, which was a lot of films for this period of time
There first invention produced was the Technicolor System 1 Additive Color, which I’m sorry to say flopped massively due to the unfortunate screening of The Gulf Between in 1917 which only a few frames remain of this film today. This was the first public premier of the technology and was disastrous. The film was captured through two separate filters red and green and the light through those two filters was captured on a single reel of film, when processed this negative had red and green information captured on a black and white reel, when this was processed the reel was placed into a projector and then threw red and green filters. To project the image an adjustable prism that had to manually lined up by the projectionist as two separate images formed on the projection screen this did not work as planned as the projectionist failed to line up the images correctly.
During this decade, the film industry went through massive changes that would completely change what movies were or stood for. After the Great War, more people began considering movies as a form of entertainment. This increased attention caused change in the industry, allowing the experience of the movie goer to massively change for the better. Many new genres, ideas and technologies emerged in the 1920s that would later dominate the industry. The 1920s saw massive changes happening in the movie industry that would help it to get one step closer to what it is today.
The first movie ever created was made by Louis Le Prince on October 14 in 1888, back then all movies were silent and the movie theatre was consider a simpler, cheaper way to entertain the masses. Since 1888 millions of movies have been made in every language and in every part of the world. Many of those movies have a connection with psychology and its theories, my favorite movie is The Breakfast Club which has a connection with the contact hypothesis of Gordon Allport. The Breakfast Club was made in 1985 and since then it has been used by various psychologist to explain psychology theories in a simple way.
In fact, 1946 is one of Hollywood’s most successful years. This was due to the massive influx of people returning from World War II, that had ended in 1945. There was a shift from manufacturing items needed for the war towards common household items. During this time period, the Great Depression and wartime air were slowly fading out (Quart and Auster 17). “The film industry changed radically after World War II, and this change altered the style and content of the films made in Hollywood” (“Post-War Hollywood”). Filmmakers started entertaining the technique of using more color and sound in their films to attract more people. At the time, American films embodied the themes of victory and national triumph. Within a time span of two years, 1942-1944, Hollywood produced 440 films in total (Quart and Auster 17). Although there was a positive boom of Hollywood and films, there would be a time of decline that followed
On December 28, 1895 Georges was an audience member of the first seen movie or “moving picture” made in the world. This was a very short single reel, one shot film documenting a train pulling into the station. When the image of the train started approaching the audience, the audience screamed thinking they would actually get run over by the train. This revolutionary new type of “magic” was discovered by the Lumiere Brothers, who used their invention, the Cinematographe, to capture the first movie ever made. Melies soon after asked to purchase a camera from the Lumiere Brothers, but they refused. In desperate attempt to utilize this new entertainment tool, he set out to build his own camera.
The 1930s was the beginning of the great film industry we have today. The 1930s (and some of the 1940s) was dubbed “The Golden Age of Hollywood”. This was the decade color and sound were introduced to film industry. Because of the Great Depression many families did not have any money and therefore wanted a cheap source of entertainment. Movies not only included a full length movie, but a cartoon, a newsreel and second movie called a “B-film”. This second film was not as good of quality as the main movie (A-film) and had lower quality. These films were allowed to experiment more with their topics than “A-films”. The prestigious films were expected to be about a topics that were popular and would then produce higher profits. The first drive-in
With this short but very interesting and informative class I have just scratched the surface of the what it takes to make a full fleged film. It takes much more than I had presumed to make a movie in Hollywood. The number of people that it takes to make a minute of a movie let alone the entire movie was astonishing to me. There are many things that it takes to start making a movie but without an idea of some sort there is no movie to be made.
Eadweard Muybridge was a director who made the first movie in 1878, The Horse in Motion. He used multiple cameras and put the individual pictures into a movie. Muybridge’s movie was just pictures of a galloping horse. Muybridge also invented the Zoopraxiscope, the first ever movie projector that made short films and movies. It was able to quickly project images, creating what is known as motion photography and the first movie to ever exist. To use the Zoopraxiscope a disc is put on the device and is turned. As the disc turns, the images are projected onto the screen and the movie starts ...

Carl Laemmle who was a film exhibitor, and producer formed the American motion picture studio in 1912. As time and people are continually changing, so is knowledge and information; and in the film industry there are inevitable technological advances necessary to keep the attraction of the public. It is through graphic effects, sounds and visual recordings that all individuals see how we have evolved to present day digital technology; and it is because of the efforts and ideas of the first and latest great innovators of the twentieth century that we have advanced in film and computers.

Now when you go back to the beginning of the making of film, it did not look and run the same way it does today. It did have a similar purpose, which was the “motion of pictures.” Now this was after the invention of photography, so the purpose of this was to put individual images in a way they looked as if they were moving.
The evolution of American cinema can be classified into four main categories, silent film, classic Hollywood cinema, new Hollywood and the contemporary period, which we are in now .During the early 20th century many eastern European Jewish immigrants were able to find work in the American film industry and eventually moved over to the production side of the movie business to become some of the biggest producers, such as The Warner Brothers.
