Vincent Van Gogh, the Dutch artist who painted Starry Night, was disrespected and unappreciated for his works during his life. However, today he is considered one of the greatest Dutch painters. Today, his work is known for its detail, beauty, and emotion. One might claim that Vincent Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night depicts his insanity. However, his painting Starry Night depicts his feelings of isolation, his feelings of alienation, and the appreciation he thought he would soon achieve during his lifetime. Van Gogh’s painting represents his feelings of isolation. According to an article by K Shabi, “The feelings of isolation Van Gogh must have experienced as a struggling and unappreciated artist before and after he entered the asylum are visible in Starry Night and literally color the overall meaning of the painting” (Shabi). However, Starry Night was intended to represent Vincent Van Gogh’s feelings of isolation and alienation from the rest of the world and to represent Vincent Van Gogh’s hopes for a future where he would have received the respect he deserved during his lifetime. Van Gogh liked to paint pictures that would properly express the intensity of his emotions at a certain time. Van Gogh must have felt pretty lonely, considering his poor experiences with love. According to a biography on Van Gogh’s love life, He was attracted to women in trouble, thinking he could help them. His cousin, Kate, was recently widowed, and when van Gogh fell in love with her, she was repulsed and fled to her home in Amsterdam. He then moved to The Hague and fell in love with Clasina Maria Hoornik, an alcoholic prostitute. She became his companion, mistress and model” (“Vincent van Gogh Biography”). Van Gogh not only felt isolated from the rest of the world, but he also felt isolated from the experiences the rest of the world had, such as falling in love and being loved in
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the world’s greatest and most well-known artists, but when he was alive he considered himself to be a complete failure. It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Born in 1853, he was one of the biggest artistic influences of the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh created a new era of art, he learned to use art to escape his mental illness, and he still continues to inspire artists over 100 years later.
Coming from a family greatly involved in art dealing, Vincent van Gogh was destined to have a place in the world of art. Van Gogh’s unique techniques and use of color, which clashed and differed greatly from the masters of the art world of his time, would eventually gain him the recognition as one of the founders of modern art. Van Gogh’s early life was heavily influenced by the role of his father who was a pastor and chose to follow in his footsteps. Although he abandoned the desire to become a pastor, van Gogh remained a spiritual being and was strong in faith. Plagued with a troubled mind and poor health, van Gogh’s life became filled with torment and isolation that would influence his career in later life as an artist. In his late twenties, van Gogh had decided that it was God’s divine plan for him to become a painter. His works would express through thoughtful composition and vibrant color, the emotions that he was unable to manifest in the real world. Van Gogh’s perception of reality and his technique would face harsh criticism and never receive full acceptance from his peers as a serious artist during his brief career. In a collection of correspondence entitled The Letters of a Post-Impressionist, Vincent confirmed these thoughts while writing to his brother Theo, “It irritates me to hear people say that I have no "technique." It is just possible that there is no trace of it, because I hold myself aloof from all painters” (27). His technique would later be marveled and revered by the art world. Vincent van Gogh’s legacy would thrive as it challenged the way the world envisioned modern art through his unique brush strokes and profound use of color as seen in his works The Sower and The Night Café. A brief look into...
The paining ‘Starry night’ was made when Van Gogh was in a mental asylum after he had an episode that resulted in him cutting of his own ear. The painting depicts the view from his asylum room, which Bennett could incorporate into his feeling of being trapped in a society that doesn’t accept him.
“This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big,” wrote van Gogh to his brother Theo. This letter was used when he was describing his inspiration for one of his best-known paintings, The Starry Night which was created in 1889. The window that he refers to was in the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France, where he tried to relax away from his emotional suffering while he kept making art.
Vincent Van Gogh is celebrated today as the greatest Dutch painter, besides Rembrandt (“Vincent Willem”). Born in Holland on March 30, 1853, Van Gogh had five other siblings and two parents, and although his mother was an artist, he never bothered with art until much later in his life (“Vincent Willem”). Van Gogh had many shortcomings in his little and dismal time on earth and it was not until his late twenties, after all else had failed, that he gave art a chance. Thanks to the help of his older brother Theo, Van Gogh was able to put all of his emotions and mental worries into productive use, creating masterpieces that are sold today for millions of dollars (“Vincent Willem”). Although he is hugely successful today, Van Gogh had little to no fame in his lifetime and he struggled immensely with his mental state of mind for many years. Ultimately his mental illness (some believe there were more than one) lead to his untimely death, but his turbulent state of mind also helped him to create magnificent images that are revered as some of the greatest pieces of art of today.
...retation of the painting some aspects were surprising to how dark and heavy hearted she could speak, she took an interesting perspective. However in her interpretative poem she found a perspective of the painting that connected with her. As she used every stroke of darkness painted into the canvas an opportunity to have it symbolize this darkness and evil that resides in the world. It told her story and her experience of a starry night. Similarly Van Gogh had used every stroke of light painted into the canvas to be a symbol of beauty, and a symbol of his fascination of the night sky and its illuminating lights. He uses swift movements of his brush to depict a sky that seem to be able to sweep the mind away from the frustrations of this world in to the dreamy night light. A single painting worth a million words tells many stories through every perspective.
The life span of 37 years saw Vincent Willem van Gogh (Vincent) in creating beautiful works he dearly loved. Painting was an avenue, which allowed him to express his inner thoughts or vent his struggles. My decision to research on Vincent’s painting, Starry Night (1889) came with the inspiration from Don Mclean’s Song, Starry Starry Night where his lyrics spoke about Vincent’s life that further intrigued me in writing this paper.
In conclusion, Van Gogh used the elements above to create a man by himself in a field. He used color to represent feeling rather than represent realism of an event. The cool colors represent the field and happiness in his work. The warm colors represent the harshness of the day and could be a metaphor for life. He used scale and proportion to emphasis the overbearing sun. He also used proportion and scale to represent literally and figuratively how far away home was. The linear perspective was only evident to me after I really studied the used of lines. I followed the lines to the horizon and left side of the painting.
This type of painting uses linseed oil as a binder in the paint. Oil paint is very slow at drying which allows the artist to come back the next day to make corrections to the painting without putting fresh paint on the canvas. Giving the artist more control over these types of paintings than others. Most of the artists that use oil paints use thin layers of what is called glaze to build up the color on the painting. Oil paintings also make it easier to add texture to the art work as well. In the Starry Night, Vincent Van Gogh uses oil paints to create this master piece. He also uses abstract which is where realistic things look unrealistic giving them different forms as well as colors. This painting was completed in 1889. The painting was the view that Van Gogh had outside of the window he worked out of when he was put into an
I am comparing my favorite painting Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh to The View of Toledo by El Greco. Both paintings are beautiful landscapes featuring the night sky. Starry Night, 29 x 36 ¼”, is an oil on canvas painting currently located at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Starry Night was painted in June of 1889 by post-impressionist Vincent Van Gogh. View of Toledo was painted by El Greco in 1598-99 during the Mannerism period. It is oil on canvas measuring 47 ¾” x 42 ¾” and is currently located at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, NY.
Van Gogh had sympathy for the peasants and furthered his passion for humanity. He studied them non-stop to explore their world. The color palette he chose was dark and crudely painted on, almost grungy. It’s a low-lit kitchen area, with the look and feel of exhaustion that the dark color palette engages the viewer to feel what is going on.
he artwork I chose to analyze is The Starry Night (June 1889) by Vincent Van Gogh.I
In this essay will be talking about and comparing between the traditional painting Starry night by Vincent Van Gogh and the digital movie poster for Midnight in Paris designed by the company Cardinal Communications USA. Starry Night is an artwork that was painted in 1889 in an asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Provience, France while the Midnight in Paris poster is digitally made somewhere in the USA by someone in that company sometime in 2010. While both these artworks are very different, they have some similarities.
But, when they were made no one gave them any recognition until time had passed for the artist. Pollack painting got famous a year later from his painting review when a life magazine article featured Pollock. His arms crossed and had a cigarette dangling from his lips, standing in front of one of his swirled, caffeinated images. What was written the caption of the photograph asked, “Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?” A powerful art critic named Clement Greenberg insistence that Pollock’s work represented a new, authentic American art. After that Pollock’s success was achieved over a period of years of making gesture, line, texture, and composition the very subject of his canvases. Van Gogh didn’t receive any recognition from his art-work on “The Starry Night,” or any of his piece of art until after his death. After many years later painters where moved by Van Gogh’s paintings in both heart and soul. Now it can’t be said that “The Starry Night” was worth as much as the rest of his paintings, but it has been known that his paintings are worth around 80 million
