The Federal Reserve - It's Time to Put an End to Central Bank Independence
If "taxation without representation" could rally the colonists against the British Crown in 1776, tight money and ruinous interest rates might be cause for populist revolt in our own day. Federal Reserve monetary policy also has severe social burdens, measured by huge changes in aggregate output, income, and employment.
The imperious Fed, much like the English Crown two centuries ago, formulates and carries out its policy directives without democratic input, accountability, or redress. Not only has the Fed's monetary restraint at times deliberately pushed the economy into deep recession, with the attendant loss of millions of jobs, but also its impact on the structure of interest rates and dollar exchange rates powerfully alters the U.S. distribution of national income and wealth. Federal Reserve shifts in policy have generated economic consequences that at least equal in size and scope the impact of major tax legislation that Congress and the White House must belabor in public debate for months.
Popularized studies of Federal Reserve performance in recent decades convey the image of the Fed seated in its Greek temple on Constitution Avenue, with Chairmen Volcker and Greenspan elevated to the realm of the gods. From centers of economic power around the nation - Wall Street, Capitol Hill, the White House, and corporate boardrooms - the classical Greek chorus intones its defense of Federal Reserve independence.
On the surface, central bank independence seems an eminently reasonable, appealingly simple solution for an agonizingly complex and muddled process of making economic policy in this postindustrial, electronically linked, and computerized global economy. The independent central bank is an institutional concept that complements well the counterrevolution now underway in U.S. budget policy. Washington's fiscal policy is locked into a deficit-cutting mode for the near future, while Congress is determined to retreat from all discretionary spending, regulatory intervention, or measures to improve equity in the distribution of national income and wealth.
With the federal fiscal policy on automatic pilot, the Fed's monetary policy could be removed entirely from the inefficiencies and confusion of the democratic process. But this deceptively simple conception poses profound questions for the process of democratic representative government in the United States as it pertains to managing the nation's economy.
Paul Peterson wrote on the price of federalism. He weighed out options and the consequences of having a federal government. In this chapter, Peterson comes up with the description of two theories, the functional and the legislative. According to Peterson, the functional theory was positive and implied that the federal governments are tasked to perform their obligations fully to the people (Coleman et al, 2011). The legislative theory is brought forward as pessimist by arguing that leaders misuse their powers. Furthermore, Peterson recommends the incorporation of economic realities into policies for proper governance.

When reading the literature of Langston Hughes, I cant help but feeling energetically charged and inspired. Equality, freedom, empowerment, renaissance, justice and perseverance, are just a taste of the subject matter Hughes offers. He amplifies his voice and beliefs through his works which are firmly rooted in race pride and race feeling. Hughes committed himself both to writing and to writing mainly about African Americans. His early love for the “wonderful world of books” was sparked by loneliness and parental neglect. He would soon lose himself in the works of Walt Whitman, Paul Laurence, Carl Sandburg and other literary greats which would lead to enhancing his ever so growing style and grace of oeuvre. Such talent, character, and willpower could only come from one’s life experiences. Hughes had allot to owe to influences such as his grandmother and great uncle John Mercer Langston - a famous African American abolitionist. These influential individuals helped mold Hughes, and their affect shines brightly through his literary works of art.
Sojourner Truth wasn’t just a heroine to blacks, slaves, and women. She was also an abolitionist and a champion of women’s rights speaking throughout the country. She acted on her strong feelings about life and the way it should be. But, in my hometown of Battle Creek, Michigan where Sojourner Truth spent her last years, she is known for her powerful speeches that traveled the nation advocating for the fair treatment of freed slaves.
The United States of America is often touted as the guiding beacon of democracy for the entirety of the modern world. In spite of this tremendous responsibility the political system of the United States retains some aspects which upon examination appear to be significantly undemocratic. Perhaps the most perplexing and oft misunderstood of these establishments is the process of electing the president and the institution known as the Electoral College. The puzzle of the Electoral College presents the American people with a unique conundrum as the mark of any true democracy is the citizens’ ability to elect their own ruling officials. Unfortunately, the Electoral College system dilutes this essential capacity by introducing an election by
It’s no secret that inequality and racial discriminations were high back in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Langston Hughes was able to use his work to counterattack this way of thinking in America. He not only led a movement, but also set an example for others to follow. In the poems I stated above, you can tell the Harlem Renaissance influences on his
A “Financial Crisis”, an “Economic disaster on a scale few nations have ever experienced”(1), the “Great Recession”, the “Lesser Depression”, the “Long Recession”, the “Global Recession of 2009”(2) and the “Financial Implosion”(3) are all expressions used to describe the economic situation the United States found itself in 2012. Louis Michael Seidman, a Harvard graduate and Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Constitution Law at Georgetown University Law Center, referred to it as “fiscal chaos”. It is Professor Seidman’s belief that the cause of this great chaos is the “archaic, idiosyncratic and downright evil provisions” of the Constitution. Seidman wrote an article in the New York Times entitled, “Let’s give up on the Constitution”, and argues, due to his personal philosophy, that the Constitution should be abandoned. (4) Seidman fails to acknowledge poor fiscal banking policy, lending to non-qualified borrowers, government bailout of private corporations or perhaps the repeal of the Glass Steagall Banking Act (5) as the sources contributing to the financial crisis. Instead, he places the entire blame on the founding fathers. In spite of Seidman’s ridiculous quibbles, the Constitution should be up held to maintain both the solidity and freedom the United States offers its citizens.
Sojourner Truth/Isabella is an outstanding woman that never took no for an answer. Without her contributions of tours, lawsuits, and speeches on women’s suffrage, the world today may be a totally different place. Yes, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were also working on the issue of women’s suffrage, but Truth seemed to get the idea going a little further with African American women having the same voting rights as the whites would eventually have. The few fearless actions of Sojourner Truth mentioned above, only skim the surface of her selflessness and perseverance that shaped America as it is known today.
Sojourner Truth is an American legend. She began life as a slave and ended her life as an outgoing speaker and free woman. Sojourner led a very disadvantage life but was able to rise above her hardships. Truth was a motivational speaker even though she was not able to read or write. Sojourner Truth continues to impact lives today through her works.
Over the past few years we have realized the impact that the Federal Government has on our economy, yet we never knew enough about the subject to understand why. While taking this Economics course it has brought so many things to our attention, especially since we see inflation, gas prices, unemployment and interest rates on the rise. It has given us a better understanding of the effect of the Government on the economy, the stock market, the interest rates, etc. Since the Federal Government has such control over our economy, we decided to tackle the subject of the Federal Reserve System and try to get a better understanding of the history, the structure, and the monetary policy of the power that it holds. The Federal Reserve System is the central banking authority of the United States.
Sojourner Truth was a Civil Rights Activist, and a Women’s Rights Activist 1797-1883. Sojourner Truth was known for spontaneous speech on racial equal opportunities. Her speech “Aint I a Women? “Was given to an Ohio Women’s Rights convention in 1851. Sojourner Truth’s was a slave in New York, where she was born and raised and was sold into slavery at an early age (bio, 2016)
“I feel safe in the midst of my enemies, for the truth is all powerful and will prevail.” Truth Sojourner, who used to call Isabella Baumfree, became one of the major powerful spokeswomen for human rights in the nineteenth century. On her young age, she owned by a Dutch American called Colonel Johannes Hardenberg in New York. Like other slaves, she was mistreated and got abused. She was obligated to marry a man called Tomas, with whom she had five children. In 1827 when her owner failed to keep his promise to set her free or to approve the New York Anti-Slavery law, she ran away, and letter told her master, “I did not run away, I walked away by daylight…” After a while, she became an itinerant preacher. During this period she became involved in the growing antislavery movement,

Ryanair has created a low cost culture and its whole organization has bought into this philosophy. The leadership at Ryanair practices what it preaches and it helps further reinforce the low cost message throughout the organization. But Ryanair needs to pay close attention to the risks highlighted in the Risk dashboard as it keeps on growing. Ryanair need to start planning for the future after Michael O’Leary. A low price strategy is a maintainable strategy as we can see from other and similar organizations like Ikea, Southwest, and Aldi etc. Ryanair’s low price strategy is a best fit for them and the future looks very bright for Ryanair.
One of the most problematic issue in economy is refers to ’’ İmpossible Trinity’ ’,which means that only two out of three choices can be applicable. This options are called : a fixed exchange rate, free capital mobility and an independent monetary policy as we show above figure . That is; It is less likely to possible to have 3 options at the same time. A country can apply a fixed exchange rate which enables capital flows automatically because of running open economy and so a country cannot maintain an independent monetary policy.
