Tom Gradgrind, one of the children raised in the Gradgrind household in Charles Dickens’ book Hard Times, is one of the pivotal characters in the novel; both in terms of theme as well as plot development. The son of Thomas Gradgrind and beloved brother of Louisa Gradgrind, Tom embodies the unabashed self-interest that Dickens depicts throughout the novel as a problem within a society etched in the ideals of hard facts. Although for the majority of the novel Tom appears to be a self-centered opportunist, there are instances where he demonstrates appreciation – and even humane affections – towards his sister Louisa that foreshadow a possible reformation for the character. His feelings towards Louisa, combined with the fact that Dickens occasionally suggests that Tom is unaware of the depravity of his thoughts and actions and regards them as natural human behavior, make his eventual fate of remorse and isolation plausible and appropriate.
Tom’s subliminal love for Louisa can be seen in various occasions despite his depiction as a person devoid of care for anybody but himself. When they are younger, Tom is very verbal about his fondness for his sister, making such statements as, “You [Louisa] are the only pleasure I have – you can brighten even this place” (Dickens 88). As he grows up to become more guided by self-interest, there is still some retention of this fondness. This can be seen even during some of Tom’s most selfish moments. An example is when he attempts to use Louisa for his own advancement by asking her to marry Bounderby; Dicken’s writes, “Her brother glanced at her face with greater interest than usual” (Dickens 128). The isolation Tom Gradgrind is subjected to at the very end of the novel, and “penitence” he feels is appropriate based on his development in the novel. Dickens’s portrayal of Tom appears to be of someone ignorant because of his upbringing, rather than innately malicious; therefore, it is unsurprising that he capable of feeling remorse once he realizes the error in his ways. His consistent distaste for Coketown makes his eventual isolation well-deserved and his longing for Louisa is predictable, if not inevitable. However, whether Tom’s character deserved to die before getting the chance to restore his relationship with his sister is questionable.

No matter the circumstance, Gatsby is always willing to perform any task in order to impress her. On one tense evening out on the town, Gatsby is caught in a fight over Daisy with her brute of a husband Tom. Jeffery Myers, a highly credible writer and analyst, writes, “Gatsby…naively believes he can repeat¬…the past. Not satisfied to win Daisy 's love, he unrealistically insists that she also deny her former love for Tom and return to the pristine virginity she possessed when Gatsby first met her” (35). Alas, the events of the evening aren’t in Gatsby’s favor. By making justified speculations and personal jabs, Tom exposes Gatsby’s hidden bootlegging business to Daisy, who strongly rejects such reckless and illegal activity. This revelation is a major setback in Gatsby’s plan to convince Daisy to abandon Tom in order to be with him.
Tom is the most selfish character because everything he does is in concern for himself. Tom is married to Daisy simply for wealth. After finding out that Daisy wants to be with Gatsby, Tom says, “‘...women run around too much these days to suit me. They meet all kinds of crazy
"I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife. Well, if that's the idea you can count me out”(229) Tom isn't just going to stand around while gatsby tries to steal his wife from him even though he cheats on her almost every night. Tom actually loves her deep inside even though he cheats on her “He nodded sagely. "And what's more, I love Daisy too. Once in awhile I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time." (252)

The novel shows the relationship of Gatsby and Daisy as a symbol of this pursuit of wealth, power, and pleasure. The reader sees the pursuit of wealth through Daisy wanting Gatsby and Tom, both of whom have money. The pursuit of power is shown through Daisy’s decision of Tom over Gatsby as Gatsby is seen as a lower social status with little power compared to Tom who has tremendous power. Pleasure is seen through the extramarital affairs of Tom and Myrtle as well as Daisy and Gatsby. The Great Gatsby, through Tom and Daisy, reveals the human condition of the pursuit of wealth, power, and pleasure through these examples and shows that the “American Dream” is not possible in a life where one’s surroundings are pushing him/her towards a life of wealth, power, and pleasure.
The author continuously characterizes Tom in a way that makes the readers deride him and not want to follow the example of his like. For example, after Tom's wife takes all their valuables and tries to strike a bargain with the devil as Tom won't do it himself, Tom goes looking for her. The reader sees that he doesn't really care about her as much as he cares about the valuables: "He leaped with joy; for he recognized his wife's apron, and supposed it to contain the household valuables"(263). That shows that he is really greedy and ruthless; no one wants to follow someone portrayed like that. Furthermore, Tom had evidence that his wife was fighting with the devil when she tried to strike that bargain. The passage that provides his reaction has a satirical tone: "He shrugged his shoulders, and he looked at the signs of a fierce clapper clawing."Egad," said he to himself, "Old scratch must have had a tough time if it!" Tom consoled himself for the loss of his property, with the loss of his wife"(264). Throughout Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, there is a broad spectrum of moral and social views demonstrated by various characters. At one end, is Tom, a man who attacks Gatsby's sense of propriety and legitimacy, while thinking nothing of running roughshod over the lives of those around him. A direct opposite of Tom's nature is Gatsby, who displays great generosity and caring, yet will stop at nothing to achieve his dream of running off with Daisy. The moral and emotional characteristics of Gastby and Tom are juxtaposed, Tom, the immoral character and Gastby, the moral character while the other characters' moral and emotional developments appear between these two.
Tom within the novel is an epitome of patriarchy, and his dominating demeanor comes out as he and Gatsby fight over Daisy. She is referred to in third person and bears neither of their arguments until her hand is forced. Daisy remains rigid and takes on the weak, damsel in distress stereotype. Tom boastfully states, “‘She’s not leaving me!’ Tom’s words suddenly leaned down over Gatsby. ‘Certainly not for a common swindler who’d have to steal the ring he put on her finger.’” (Fitzgerald 141). Tom’s attitude and tone is forceful in nature and arrogantly brings to Gatsby’s attention that he is a long forgotten lover. It is evident that Tom enforces his position and radiates dominance, “‘She’s not leaving me!’” (Fitzgerald 141). Daisy, subject to the will of Tom becomes fearful of what she stands to lose and complies submissively with what he declares. It is his patriarchal attitude that distinguishes the cause for his firmly held belief that he is superior and no woman would ever wish to leave him, especially not for a ‘common swindler’ as Tom suggests Gatsby is. His supremacy suggests that it is well within his conviction that extra-marital affairs should be forbidden for women such as his wife. Tom sneeringly
Another character who displays such qualities is Daisy’s husband, Tom. Tom is even more dishonest than Daisy, a notion that begins taking shape with the discovery of Tom’s "girl" in the city. Tom proves to be a man of little morals. Although he confronts Daisy about morals in her relationship with Gatsby, Tom has his own woman on the side. Also, he lets this fact be known by others as though it does not bother him, an exposing of his nature. Later, after Myrtle is killed in the accident, Tom shows sadness, but not remorse. Tom then instructs George to murder Gatsby, an act that comes more from a heart seeking revenge for Daisy than for Myrtle.
Characters who yearn for appreciation, the portrayal of a depressing ambiance, and the repetition of buried guilt are a few resemblances of the Masterpiece rendition of Great Expectations and Dickens’ novel. In both adaptations, many characters struggle with the loneliness and troubles of life. Although life’s issues differ from when the novel was written until now, the audience can still relate to the characters. This classic story has traveled through many era’s and the moral is still understandable to all people who have enjoyed the tale in its many different formats. It is especially relatable to those who have struggled to cope with the challenges of life.

The novel, Hard Times by Charles Dickens revolves around the central idea of English society, including the social, economical, and political issues during the mid 19th century. Fact superior to imagination is one of the main themes of this novel, apparent mainly in book one. Mr. Gradgrind raises his children to ignore their imaginations and anything that is not cold hard fact. For example, Louisa, his daughter, in particular tends to question this rationalism with her curiosity about the circus. There are countless examples in which Mr. Gradgrind bestows his “wisdom” on both his children, and students in the education system located in Coketown. The way Mr. and Mrs. Gradgrind raised their children, described by Dickens, parallels the way in which John Stuart Mill was raised by his own parents in London during the 19th century. John, similarly to Louisa, was educated with the idea that any of his own imagination or creativity was wrong. His parents would burn toys in front of him, emulating the idea that any object or concept that brings happiness is simply wrong. His father, Sir James Stuart Mill, also had a major impact on Mill’s childhood and even manhood. The majority of his infancy was centered on education, and the thought that hard-core knowledge was the solution to any conflict. During this time, his father would make him read Greek and Latin classics to ensure that he were prepared for disciplinary jobs in the future. Through this childhood of fact, and purely fact, along with a lack of moral influences instituted in his life, constituted Mill to become an advocate for utilitarianism. This book includes stark criticisms of many aspects of Victorian society such as child labor and class structure. He criticizes class structure by portraying other characters’ cruelty and corruption as an impediment from Copperfield’s discovery from himself. Dickens depicts an evil character as someone who is a result of their experiences such as James Steerforth or Uriah Heep or as someone who is inherently evil such as Mr. Murdstone. Also, Dickens is able to create a contrast between the evil of these characters and the warmth and goodness characterizing the people on Copperfield’s side. By comparing their characters, Dickens further emphasizes the difference between the two sides and “provides a forum for Dickens's views of the inherent nature of evil as well as a critique of a society that enables and shapes this darker side of humanity”(Miline, 102). Dickens sheds light on the negative parts of the Victorian class sytem and how it created the people Copperfield met in his life. Dickens strengthens his position on class differences in a variety of ways. Although he displays his clear disapproval, Dickens seems “to have mixed feelings about class consciousness as he has David maintain some distance from the Peggottys, but he portrays this family with an honesty and goodness of nature that is lacking in many upper-class characters” (Miline, 94). Despite clear signs of his disapproval, Dickens refuses to entirely condemn class differences because he acknowledges that it will always exist. Most of the story revolved around utilitarianism and the study of cold hard facts, but when the character flaws began to surface as a result of this philosophy, Dickens is quick to emphasize them. One actually sees the main character of the book and firm supporter of utilitarianism, Mr. Thomas Gradgrind, experience the faults of his practice and begin to stray from it.
