For a prosperous, seemingly well-educated, and religiously zealous county brimming with ethnic diversity, I assumed that racism was a chapter left in the history books. However, for years, I personally witnessed numerous falsehoods. Just this year, my friend’s well-respected parents banned her from attending a party. The reason was the birthday girl’s skin color. In school, I hear daily, harsh remarks aimed at Hispanic students demanding they leave the country. I’m utterly surprised that in 2017 blatant prejudice still exists. Sadly, the reason racism still prevails is continual, cyclic ignorance from my community. I openly speak out against this bigotry and encourage others to do the same. I sincerely try to contribute my support and friendship
Racism is more than just blatant comments and police brutality. It is also found in the subtle things, like the lack of opportunities in education. Graduation by Maya Angelou and I Just Wanna Be Average by Mike Rose both address this issue of opportunities and race. In St. Louis, Missouri, Maya Angelou went to an all-black school during the 1930s and 40s, while Mike Rose is a second generation Italian immigrant in Los Angeles in the 1950s. Both wrote about their experiences with systemic racism in education. Both authors are given low expectations and have no power over their futures, which shows how systemic racism sets up a self-fulfilling prophecy of underachievement.

Many people in the United States society believe that people of all cultures, races, and ethnicities are now on an even playing field. People with this belief support their logic with the argument that since equal rights for people of color and women have been required by law for some time now, we are all inherently as equal as claimed in the Declaration of Independence. Many believe that race is no longer an issue, a viewpoint frequently referred to as color-blindness. National polling data indicated that a majority of whites now believe discrimination against racial minorities no longer exists. (Gallagher, 96) Color-blindness allows a white person to define himself or herself as politically and racially tolerant and then proclaim their adherence to a belief system that does not see or judge individuals by the “color of their skin.” (Gallagher, 98) Many Caucasians in particular are of the opinion that because they listen to hip-hop or cheer for their favorite black, professional sports player that they are not racist. Racism isn’t a subject that appears in every day conversations. Although most people try to ignore its existence, it’s quite obvious that it marked the lives of a lot of people and it has now become an essential part of our history. As a student who has lived in the valley all her life, I’ve been taught about the hardships African Americans had to endure while obtaining their freedom, becoming eligible to vote, being segregated, but never did I stop to think that the people who shared my culture and walked the streets of the Valley and San Antonio were going through a similar experience. Throughout the years it has become apparent that African Americans weren’t the only people who had been mistreated.
Think about your largest insecurity and how you feel when others bring it to light. For some this is a daily occurrence as they are ridiculed for their race. In the article, “On Racist Speech,” author Charles R. Lawrence III discusses factors pertaining to racism and how it influences our daily lives negatively. Lawrence grew up through the stages of segregation and was able to watch our nation grow to what it is now. The topic that is brought to question is, do we really live in a truly integrated and equal country? Segregation is not only an issue of the past, but continues to be a problem in modern day. In this world today, hate is becoming increasingly more abundant, especially as it concerns race. Whether it be an unarmed black man shot by a white police officer or the use of racial slurs towards someone, it seems like racism is all around us. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, it shows a little girl named Scout using racial slurs. Racism is so culturally accepted in the town that it’s okay to use racial slurs such as the N-Word that even Atticus, a lawyer representing a black man falsely accused of rape, uses it a couple of times. Earlier this year, the Ku Klux Klan, a group of white supremacists, held a violent rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and proved that racism isn’t a thing of the past.
Imagine that you are walking down the street and you see an Islamic person walking the opposite direction towards you. Do you think that you are going to be killed within the next minute that it takes your two paths to cross? Do you think about 9/11 or do you think about how tragic it is that the whole Islamic race is now stereotyped and discriminated against by Americans? I find it ironic that all of the Islamic race is looked down upon just because nineteen men, who were affiliated with al-Qaeda (Staff 1), decided to harm and massacre thousands of Americans on 9/11. Now, when Americans board a plane, their eyebrows are more likely to raise if they see an Islamic person on the aircraft. Today, if you ask a teenager if they remember 9/11 in clear detail, his or her answer would most likely be no. Twelve years ago, the oldest teenager would have been seven. Kids that were alive on 9/11 may be racist towards the Islamic race even though we do not remember it clearly. Young children, like Scout, are colorblind in a sense (Alvarez 1). She is too young to recognize racial distinctions (Alvarez 1). Little children on 9/11 learned to be racist towards Islams because of America’s generalization of their race. Throughout the story, Scout has learned from the example Atticus has set forth. Atticus has taught his children to respect people regardless of what race, class, or gender they are. Atticus wants his children to do what is morally right of them and not conform to society’s prejudice ways. We are not born believing in racism. We are taught it by our surroundings.
Racism and prejudice has been present in almost every civilization and society throughout history. Even though the world has progressed greatly in the last couple of decades, both socially and technologically, racism, hatred and prejudice still exists today, deeply embedded in old-fashioned, narrow-minded traditions and values.
How unbearable would it feel to be forced to leave your community, a site that is your home and place that you can connect to elders from generations past, due to the Government choosing to shut down resources and power? How unfair would it be not to access your money like everyone else, and had to do so through major corporation at an increased price? To not be seen as a human being, but merely the flora and fauna that inhabit this earth; despite the fact your people had been on this land for millions of years previous? The answer to those questions are unjustifiable, and the thought of these issues alone illustrates that racism is still a common problem. Fundamentally, racism is a result of the denial of human interpersonal relationships. For some people, racism is a myth or issue of the past, as it continually goes past unnoticed in "mainstream news" except when a violent outbreak occurs. While many would claim that racism in “virtually nonexistent” in today’s society, they are exceptionally misguided. When people think of racism in school, the first thing that comes to mind is a black student being called “monkey” or “nigger” by fellow classmates. Growing up in Haiti, a country that is 95% black, and even when I lived in Belgium, I never dealt with this issue. It was pretty shocking that when I moved to the “greatest and most diverse country on earth” it was such a regular occurrence. As much as those kids’ comments were hurtful, I took solace in the fact that my future looked brighter than theirs. Soon enough, their words stopped having any effect on me and just like at 15 years of age, I had the world all figured out.
