The Development and Evolution of Hip-hop Did you know that the first hit single to feature rap was by a rock band or did you know that hip-hop’s birthday was August 11, 1973? Hip-hop is one of the few genres to have a definitive origin on how it became what it is today. It had a prevalent amount of components to make it popular affecting people who respects the art and their crafters. It is a style of music that focuses on rhythm and beats. For example, an artist, MC, or rapper would get on the mic and rhythmically talk over the beat. Hip-hop is represented more than just a genre of music. It became a form of life style and a culture that influence many. Hip-hop became what it is today thanks to the pioneers or the founders of hip-hop, the 1980s generation of hip-hop artists introducing a new school sound, and the changes hip-hop made over the years.

“Hip-hop is a cultural movement that attained widespread popularity in the 1980s and 90s; also, the backing music for rap, the musical style incorporating rhythmic and/or rhyming speech that became the movements most lasting and influential art form” (Light & Tate, n.d, para. 1). Hip-hop consist of deejaying, rapping, graffiti, and b-boying or break dancing. It originated in the South Bronx in the late 1970s. The four elements that made hip-hop were a collection of diverse ethnicity in the Bronx credited to Dj Kool Herc, Grand Wizard, Grandmaster Flash, and many more (Light & Tate, n.d, para. 8).
Hip-Hop Factors
Hip-hop was not born by one factor but many factors. Hip-hop can be compared to a child growing up. It had to go through stages to reach what it is now. In the mid-1980s, a new generation of rappers came into place. There was Run-D.M.C, a trio that mixed rap with hard rock, defining a new style of hip-hop. They also brought rap into the mainstream audience (Light & Tate, n.d, para.8).
