Advances in technology and infrastructure make artificial intelligence put into practical applications. At the moment, the most striking of the new technology is the auto-driving car. Does the wide spread of such products bring unexpected effects? The answer is yes, at least the two will appear first: self-driving cars will be rejected, buy these cars will become a "hateful appearance." On May 7th, 2016, Joshua Brown became the first casualty of an autonomous car crash. Many other automobile accidents occurred that day, and some of those accidents also resulted in death. Mr. Brown’s accident gathered widespread attention because the autonomous car he was riding in failed, while in autopilot mode, to identify a transport truck crossing the highway and the result was a tragedy. This incident serves as a warning that automation only makes us more safe if we remain engaged in the task of driving. The National Safety Council believes that there is a road to zero deaths and this road involves automation of driver functions (NSC, n.d.), but what is our responsibility as drivers in this time of increasing automation?
It might be hard to see where the self-driving car could have issues with safety but an interesting question arises when an accident is unavoidable. The question posed is “How should the car be programmed to act in the event of an unavoidable accident? Should it minimize the loss of life, even if it means sacrificing the occupants, or should it protect the occupants at all costs? Should it choose between these extremes at random?” (ArXiv). Although none of these accidents were the cars fault, professionals say that human drivers are not used to the autonomous cars mannerisms yet and that is why they are happening. For instance, when a self-driving car senses someone in a crosswalk they wait until the person is completely out of the crosswalk then wait a few more seconds to be safe.
