The Great Barrier Reef is extremely old and has been home to an enormous amount of living things. The Reef, being in a cycle composed of living coral growing on to dead coral proves the fact that has the Reef dating back perhaps as much as twenty million years. Due to human intervention and human pollution of our Earth, one of the seven natural wonders of the world is starting to die and disappear. Our pollution has lead to certain effects on the Reef; effects like rising ocean temperatures and acidification, physical pollution, overfishing, shipping and boating pollution, as well as indirectly increasing the amount of the Reef’s natural predator, the Crown of Thorns Starfish. The goal should be protecting, managing, and preserving the Great Barrier Reef for all current and future generations.
Due to rising ocean temperatures the coral on the reef is dying and becoming bleached.

Overall the reef receives runoff from at least 35 major catchments that drain 424,000 km2 of coastal Queensland and the amount of sediment flowing into the marine park has just about quadrupled over the past 150 years. There are significant effects from these run offs on the reef, especially the inshore areas close to the developed coasts, effects such as mangroves dying-back and increased amounts of overbearing algae on coral reefs. Good water quality is the reason why the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most beautiful, diverse and complex ecosystems in the world and the decline in water quality can affect all the corals, seagrass and other important habitats as well as the marine life supported by those habitats. The decline in water quality would be detrimental to the tourism and fishing industries. As of right now the “Reef Water Quality Protection Plan”is in place. Earth, an endless source of wonder and beauty, produced the Great Barrier Reef. Hustling and bustling, the Reef thrives like a busy city, teeming with life. Sheltering thousands, corals, maintain the well-being of the Reef; however, the world threatens its nature and delicacy. Populations growing and technological advances increasing, the world becomes more and more disconnected with the natural world, posing an alarming risk for the planet we live on. Although many organizations try to keep the oceans clean, because of human interference and unnatural occurrences, the Great Barrier Reef needs scientific help to adapt corals to new conditions for means of survival, putting pressure on the Australian government to save their ocean environment.

Coral Reefs are said to be the “tropical rainforest” of the sea. They are home to over 25% of all marine life (http://coralreefalliance.org.stories/storyReader$77). Over the past few decades they have been subjected to destructive anthropogenic practices. Some of the major threats to coral reefs include sedimentation, water pollution, harmful recreational activities, and global warming. All of these things cause stress on corals and can potentially cause mortality. Corals are made up of two parts, a polyp and zooxanthellae. A polyp is a calcerous body that grows from a hard part of the ocean floor. Zooxanthellae is a photosynthetic algae which lives in the polyp and provide energy for themselves and the coral. In many cases, corals undergo “bleaching,” which is a process where corals lose the zooxantheallae or chlorophyll pigment, and turn white (Wilkinson et all). After bleaching corals can survive for several months. It is possible for corals to recover by hosting more zooxantheallae, but it can take between 5 and 50 years for them to recover completely (Wilkinson et all, 1999).
There are many actions we can take to help the great barrier reef survive, such us using different means of transport like walking or biking, which decreases pollutions like oils and gas, also reducing the use of plastic bottles, straws and containers will also help, as well as volunteering at a beach cleanup events.

To help ensure this downward spiral in eliminated before it is too late, park officials and scientist conduct continuous research on the effects of ocean acidification and global warming on marine organisms and overall health and longevity of these ecosystems. In reality that's not what it really looks like, really the ocean is a desolate place that is barren like a desert. Many marine species have been lost by as much as 49%.(seeker) A big part of that reason is because of coral bleaching which causes as stated above a decline in species that depend on the coral as there home. Coral bleaching is a serious problem that could cause problems for everyone if we don’t fix it.
In 2003, the Commonwealth and Queensland governments started collaborating together to enhance the water quality in the GBR. In their joint efforts, they managed to create the Reef Water Quality Protection Plan (hereafter RWQPP). Basically the plans aim was to identify factors that affected the water quality, enhance agriculture methods so that it would not end up in the reefs water, and not to mention improve the water quality in GBR. However, it was not until 2008 that the RWQPP got the proper financial support needed to execute the most crucial phases (Brodie, 2015). Brodie assumes that to be the reason why there were modest results in the cutback of the substances on the reef during the period between 2008-2013. Proper results usually take a long time to achieve and in this case also substantial funding. The plan have been updated and improved throughout the years, and new targets have been supplemented to accomplish the end goal (Brodie, 2015).
