The Age of Enlightenment (or simply the Enlightenment or Age of Reason) is the era from the 1650s or earlier to around the 1780s in which cultural and intellectual forces in Western Europe emphasized reason, analysis and individualism rather than traditional lines of authority. Enlightenment ideas helped open people’s minds to a new way of thinking and not to except the ways of the past. These ideas challenged their old ways of thinking, questioned divine-right of rules and taught that people how they should be able to gain material well-being, social justice, and happiness in this life, not just the next one. This western cultural movement enlightened us with several philosophies, or approaches to thinking and exploring the world. The enlightenment thinkers thought objectively and without prejudice. The writers were "enlightened" because they believed that humans could answer questions for themselves, and found ways to put this philosophy into practice. Reasoning, rationalism, and empiricism were some of the ideas and thoughts that composed the Enlightenment. The writers also incorporated these themes in their writing as well. Rationalism chose reason and logic, rather than observation (the senses) as the basis for knowledge. René Descartes (1596 to 1650) was the father of rationalism and he was also the French mathematician who invented analytical, or Cartesian geometry. Science and reasoning become the new popular way of thinking and everything was not only about religion. Another important enlightenment writer was Immanuel Kant. Immanuel Kant described this period simply as freedom to use one's own intelligence. Kant introduced a way of thinking about the relation of human mind to the objective world and established powerful method of moral reasoning. Kant changed the entire world by providing a new way of thinking about how the human mind relates to the world. The Enlightenment was a period of time in history where sciences prospered. The scientific method was also created during this time. The scientific method uses observation and experimentation to explain theories on the workings of the universe. This process removed blind observance to tradition from science, and allowed scientists to logically find answers through the use of reason.
