The End Of Solitude Analysis

In his article, “The End of Solitude,” Williams Deresicwicz discusses how he believes solitude is almost, if not already gone due to the technology era. I agree with Deresicwicz, technology has made us scared to be alone in a way, and social media has become people our personal diaries. When life gives us problems or we want get away, we use to call upon our solitude. A place to get away, much like Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. This was his secret hide out, built into a mountain, where he would think and get away. Much like the time this idea of Superman needing solitude, which came out in 1966, people enjoy their private lives. There was no social media, people gain knowledge thought literature and they connect with other by interacting

with others. Present day, we can’t function without our devices, it’s a sin not have a phone or social media. People put their entire lives on the web for the world to see. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, allows the world to be in our lives 100% of the time. We have blogs where we speak our minds, Instagram to show people what we are doing at all times by pictures, and not to mention the flood of reality television. In the old days, solitude was away for us to pray, create new ideas, and a great outlet to get away from the world. The new generation definition of solitude is a selfie stick and Snapchat. With our devices in our hands every day, practically every minute, where do we have time to be to ourselves? Solitude is being attack in so many ways, but what people don’t realize we are helping the cause.
The millennials can’t live without social media especially celebrities. We live in a copycat society, and nobody wants to be left out, not even entertainers. Celebrities have always set the standard on how we want look, feel, and how we think we should act. Look at today’s celebrity’s vs the old celebrities, in the 1960’s there were no twenty-four-hour access to their personal life, and they only thing they wanted us to know about them, was their acting or music. For the fans to connect with The Beatles, they had to read about them in biographies and magazines. Now with digital era upon us, the fans know everything about celebrities from outlets such as, TMZ and others blogs sites that writes about them. Some celebrities feels this is a way for more exposer. Even Television shows has change from the traditional sit-coms, to reality shows. I remember as a kid, sitcoms like, Full House, and Boy Meets World, were the closest to reality television that we were getting. Now we have “Meeting the Kardashian,” the inside life of a stupid rich family that doesn’t have real-life problems. Yet ever one gravitate to what they are doing. Kim Kardashian, one of stars of the show, makes a living off destroying solitude. She is iconic for giving the world a full tour of her everyday life. From every broke up to every rant she goes on, much like what we see every day with regular people. We must remember there only celebrities, what they can do, we can’t always do. Their lives are not how our life are, yet were so blinded with being perfect, we forget how to ourselves. Celebtires don’t like been, neither do we.
