“Unconfirmed reports from Rikkers Islands says that one of their inmates hasescaped, and may be in the vacinity,” the DJ on Amy Batts’s car radio reported. ‘Great.
Another thing to worry about,’ Amy thought as she pulled her car into the parking garage. “It is rumored that the prisoner that alledgedly escaped as a distingising tatoo on his right hand. Its suppossedly of a snake wrapped around a young girl,’ the DJ was saying as Amy parked her car.
It was almost 8:30 on Tuesday night at Smith & Johnson’s Law Firm. At the
tender age of 25 Amy landed an intership at the New York law firm. It was great! She
got the chance to aid attorney in cases (mainly by doing reshearch, but hey it will look
great on a resuma).
Other than her footsteps, which echoed through out the parking gargae, the place
was dead silent. If she hadn’t forgotten an importin law book she won’t even be there.
Amy felt her heart beating wildly as she neared the elevator.
“Get a grip Batts,” she said to herself. “Its not like you’re the only person here.” Which was true, a lot of lawarys burned the midnight oil at Smith & Johnson, working hard to prove their case. Still, she hesated at the elevator.
Amy has always feared elevators. Who could blame her? Think about it for a
minute. You enter a steel cage. You are cut off from all help. You don’t know anyone
else in the elevator.
Still, she stood there, forced to decide between her faithful stairs, or the cold, metal elevator. ‘There’s nothing to be afraid of,’ Amy told herself. ‘It’s just an elevator. There have been reports of muggings on stairs. The elevator is safer,’ she rationalized as she pushed the button to summen the steel box.
The doors swooshed open, and Amy had to step back from the glare of the lights.
Then, very timidly, she stepped inside the death trap, and watched as the doors clanged
together behinde her. Her work area was on the 25th floor. Takeing deep breaths Amy
stared back at herself relected in the mirror like doors. Her long blonde hair was slightly messed up, and there were bags under her dark brown eyes. She was all alone.
‘It’s not that bad,’ Amy thought to herself as the elevator slowly asended.

Throughout history women have struggled to become equal with men. Even though women are not exactly equal with men today because of things like unequal pay, they are closer to being equal than in other periods of history. Particularly, women now are much closer to being equal with men than in the Victorian Era of Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë. In the Victorian Era, women were largely expected to obey men, while in modern times, women are expected to be independent. Furthermore, now that women have more rights than in the Victorian Era, they rely less on men and therefore spend their lives very differently from the Victorian Era. If Jane Eyre took place today, many of the characters would have made different choices based on the way gender roles have changed and affect society. Women Jane Eyre are forced by society to act certain ways while relying on men to support them much unlike modern women.
Previous government legislation in the UK supported the medical model approach in regards to education of children with special educational needs (SEN). Children with SEN were seen as handicapped and placed in segregated educational provisions under the direction of medical professionals (Huge and Copper, 2007). However, with the introduction of the social model government legislations in regards to education began to change. Legislations and polices such as the Warnock Report (1978), The 1981, 1993 and 1996 Educational Acts and the 1997 Green Paper Excellence for all Children, all pushed for a more inclusive educational system. In the last 15 years further legislations have been put in place to strengthen the educational rights of children with SEN.
The main character of this book is Sylvia Barret she is a recent college graduate, and works as a high school English teacher. Sylvia would like to work in a nice private school, like so many of her friends. Instead Sylvia takes a job with the board of education, in a nieve attempt to reach out to the under privileged inner-city children in public schools. There are many individuals who contribute to the education of the student with special needs. Their roles and responsibilities are varied, and each play an important part in the education of the student with disabilities. In the early years of special education, individuals with disabilities were not educated in the traditional classroom. Many of the students were left at home to be taught by their parents, or, sent away to institutions if the families were unable to care for them. In addition, some were education in private schools at the cost of the families. It was not until the 1970’s that special education became acceptable in the public schools. The passing of legislation made it possible for all students to have a right to a free and public education, regardless of their disabilities. The individual with disabilities education act (IDEA) opened the door to education for all students and therefore a change in special education.
The debate of mainstreaming children with a disability challenges the idea of having an enclosed environment where they can effectively learn. University of Missouri, College of Education states, “The term ‘special needs’ is used to collectively define those that require assistance due to physical, mental, behavioral, or medical disabilities or delays” ( .) Opponents who encourage mainstreaming argue that mainstreaming special needs children is beneficial. They claim children with a disability should receive equivalent access to public education and not be left behind because of an impairment. Many also dispute attempts should be made to develop tests to measure academic achievement. Aron and Loprest state “Reforming special education cannot be done in isolation; it requires integration with reforms being made in general education” (116). However, there are many problems the education system is going to face if children with a disability are integrated into standard classes.
