Mankind has been engaged in many conflicts throughout history. Each conflict and battle has brought new weapons that have resulted in an increase in combat deaths. The development of these new weapons has also forced the development of new ways to protect and enhance the survival of the soldiers. U.S. soldiers are safer and more efficient today because of technological advances in robotic warfare, nonlethal weapons, and vehicles, and improved soldier equipment. The efficiency of the modern day soldier has improved because of the new technology in robotic warfare. Specifically, the development of drones and robots has changed the way wars are fought. With the mish-mash of equipment that a soldier carries which include communication devices, ammunition, weapons, and batteries this can add up very quickly. There is a development machine that can carry 400 pounds and either follows along with a ground troops or to be sent to meet troops at a certain location with the gear. This robot is very useful in the battlefield and can improve troop’s efficiency. Also with the development of new exoskeletons that reduce injuries, weight, and gives the troops and energy boost. Exoskeletons may sound like they are from the future and have only been in movies, but they are here and ready to help troops in the field. The human universal load carrier or HULC which is being developed by the Army and Lockheed Martin is a wearable robot with leg braces that transfer weight from the troops back down to the ground. The MH has a FARP or forward aerial refueling point which can be used to refuel planes or other aircrafts while being in air this is a great development for long distances missions. Also this bird has the capability to transporting troops in and out of the battle field without harm. With its 105-mm main this beast of a machine is one of the most feared things on the planet. Not only does the M1 have a 105-mm cannon it has a M240 7.62mm mounted machine gun. This allows for it to engage more than one enemy at a time. As times change for the types of warfare, also does the transportation, the armor, as well as the weaponry. From the caveman era with rocks wrapped with veins around a stick followed by the renaissance era with archers and swords. Then came the conquest of the Americas with single-round guns and light clothing, now today with automatic multi-round rifles and bulletproof armor. Some wonder what is next in the development of military technology such as weaponry and armor. Marvel’s Iron Man takes a much detailed look from the government, after the first movie as Tony Stark (Main Character in the comic and in the movies) creates a suit that gives him superhuman abilities, bulletproof metal, health monitoring system, the ability to fly, and many other things. Many fans of the Iron Man trilogy dream of the day when science fiction becomes reality. Officials from U.S. Special Operation Command issued a formal request to researchers to help them build this suit the military is calling the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (TALOS). As the Army prepares for future wars, they want to research the Iron Man suit and develop a working suit by 2018. Even though the cost of building an Iron Man suit is too expensive, but the armor would help protect soldiers from the serious injuries of war by the medical/technological advancements, the abilities it gives to the operator, also it would change warfare.
Advancements in technology and science contributed to one of the most gory and bloodiest wars in the annals of human existence. These new technological advancements revolutionized how people regarded war. War was no longer where the opposite forces fought in a coordinated battle. War evolved into a game of cunning strategy where the side with the bigger, more powerful, and smarter toys played better. This led to a fierce competition where each side tried to create the smarter machines and better weapons, leading to deadly mass killing weapons in the process.
In all its years of fighting the US military has never looked so lean. The fat boy of the world’s militaries is being forced, by congress, on a diet plane not even Jenny Craig would suggest. Congress has told the US military simply, with looming budget cuts, to Charmin up because less simply has to do more. The US military is experiencing an unprecedented troop reduction due to lack of funding. Consequently, as newton stated so accurately so many years ago, “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”. As our military shrinks and generals are being told to do more with less, many are reacting by turning to advanced weapon technology to fill the void where boots once stood.
As we transition from subjective training to objective, it is critical to understand the emphasis on training has not changed, just the language. Commander will continue to focus on battle focus training developed by long- range, short- range and near- term planning. The Sustainable Readiness Model (SRM) is the Army’s newest system for prioritizing resources for units on a 5-year cycle based on the level of readiness they must achieve. Each year of the cycle has established Personnel (P), Sustain (S) and Readiness (R) Aim Points on the Unit Status Report (USR). The SRM seeks to stabilize units in a “band of excellence,” even following their READY year, maintaining the highest readiness level instead of automatically downgrading their readiness to a C4 level regardless of whether they deployed. Guidelines in the Prepare Year (PY) found in the SRM will assist Commanders at every level on key training events they will need to focus on for that particular
Recent technological advancements on show in the recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have indicated, to some, that there is a new American way of war. Scholars, however, do not seem to have reached consensus on what a new way of war for the United States would embody. Depending on the scholar, their beliefs are underwritten by the American ability to wage war with highly interconnected, agile, precise, and extremely damaging methods or because the United States is capable of waging war with a small, Special Forces centered footprint. Other scholars argue that there is not a new American way of war because traditional methods are still necessary in many kinds of conflict. Scholars who address this question focus on conflicts that they believe to be important indicators of how the United States will act in the future, but miss the forest for the trees. The choice of a particular method of combat in any given war is not the result of some national tendency, but rather the result of the political object desired. The political object is the ultimate arbiter of the choice of strategy in war, and that is certainly not new to how the United States wages war.
The petition states that: “First, these weapons must be re-classified as lethal. This is not only accurate, but it ensures that these weapons are used only in situations that would otherwise justify the use of lethal force.”
Science fiction never ceases to amaze me as I take great enjoyment in exploring these creative universes. I have always had a great interest in military science fiction for its take on technological innovation and critical analysis. Military science fiction in general is very speculative about future of technology and warfare. The military science fiction genre also serves as a critique of contemporary politics as it deals with many of the same issues that go on today. This has made military science fiction one if the most well respected genres of science fiction for it ability to indirectly criticize modern society. My Integrated Project explores the relationship between how technology that has arisen from war has been some of the most innovative and why war has become an unshakeable aspect of human existence.
To conclude, while most of these technologies would most likely have been discovered and improved upon without the influence of war the process was sped up to meet the urgency presented with conflicts. Everyone is affected by at least one of these technologies on a daily basis whether it is derived from the materials, weapons, transportation, medical, or communications sectors. Technology allows Americans to live easier lives and although the many soldiers who have served their country did not actually create the technology, their sacrifices that led to the funding and need for improvements. Everyone should think about where their cell phones and computers came from and what others did to give everyone the freedom to use these devices.
War is one thing that we all know is a necessary evil. The United States has been involved in many wars since being founded in the late 1700’s. There are many reasons that the United States has been involved in, or is currently involved in wars. Although war is not always a popular thing to become a part of, the full effects of the war are not always known and may never be known as long as the United States is a country. Stephen Crane tells us that there are many effects of war in his poem “War is Kind”. From that it can be derived that physical, mental, family, etc are all effects of war needing to be monitored. All of these effects are causing hardships among the people that are coming home from these battles either directly or indirectly. The full effects of any war are never known and are something that is going to need further investigation to allow professionals such as mental and physical health doctors to provide soldiers with the help they so greatly deserve.
Personal weapons fired at short ranges are the primary weapons of terrorists as well as the police officer or soldier fighting against them. One of the most important facets of personal weapons is that they have changed little since the 1940s. They have not been affected by the technological revolutions of nuclear, electronic and aerodynamic guidance and control systems. The weapons may be smaller and lighter with more advanced sights, but the ranges and rates of fire have changed little.
The use of drones as weapons of war and delivery and surveillance systems should not be dismissed because many people do not realize the real capabilities of drones and how they can be used to better the world through efficient air strikes, faster delivery times, and useful surveillance. Some of the most common misconceptions about drones arise due to the lack of knowledge about what drones are. A drone is a remote controlled, pilotless aircraft that can be used to survey an area, conduct stealth missions, and deliver supplies into difficult to reach areas (Drone). Unmanned aircraft are also, contrary to popular belief, not solely machines that kill without even a thought to who is being fired upon. They have proved to be effective surveillance units in areas that may be dangerous for manned aircraft to fly, along with the potential to be reliable delivery units (Drones).
