Everyone has to make choices in their lives. As a child most of our choices are very small. For instance, choosing what toy we wanted to play with. The older everyone gets the more difficult choices, come into play. We take on the choices of adulthood. We control our future. We decide whether our life is a disaster or a success. One of the simplest choices to make is to not make a choice at all. Sometimes not making a choice can save us from things we don’t want to know or have happen. Jimmy Buffet, a singer-songwriter, wrote a song titled, “I DON’T KNOW AND I DON’T CARE.” In Buffets’ song lyrics he writes: “Why does the sun set in the west? And why does my heart keep beating in my chest? What ever happened to the Duke of Earl? I got a PBS mind in an MTV world. Is it ignorance or apathy I forgot these lessons taught to me. Some say life isn’t fair, Hey, I don’t know, I don’t care.” Buffet is being asked a series of questions that most people can’t even begin to wrap their minds around. Buffet makes the choice to not try to decipher the question and to just reply with, “Hey, I don’t know, I don’t care.” Choices can help bring happiness into our lives when we have had a downer. Everyone has the choice to bring joy or sorrow into their lives. In the poem, “I Will Look for You,” writer, Ron Wallace, describes of how he looks for his mother in the everyday things he passes by. In the beginning of the poem Wallace states, “Some days I think I’m past the loss; until a voice, a song, a sound.” Wallace is saying, that on some days he wakes up and thinks he’s done with the sorrow of his mother’s death, but he then finds her again when he sees or hears a certain person or thing. At the end of the poem, Wallace writes: “I search t... ... middle of paper ... ... life changing question, “Will you marry me?” Overfilled with joy, fear, slight nausea, and unspeakable emotions, I replied, “Why? We are only eighteen!” By the next day, I did reply, “Yes. Of course!” I don’t know how my marriage is going to be, that’s the effect of my choice. I may not find out for years, but on June 6th, 2014, my choice is finally set into stone. I will be a wife, a student, a friend, and eventually a mother. All I can do is hope that my choices now and in the future will have great effects on me and my husband’s life. Choices are the stepping stones to the path of life. We make the choices that effect our lives. Some can cause joy and some can cause sorrow. Sometimes we don’t even need to make a choice, life continues no matter what. We just need to always remember our choices need to be thought upon. Our future is in the hand of our choices.
It is difficult to make life decisions when knowing that it is all up to you to make the right choice not knowing what the outcome is. In “Gregory” by Panos Ionannides, the soldier has to decide whether to follow the headquarters or his own instincts. Furthermore, in “Just Lather, That’s All” the barber also has to make a choice in a small amount of time, to either kill Torres or not. Moreover, he has no orders to kill Torres it was his own decision to kill someone. The protagonists in “Gregory” and “Just Lather, That’s All” both face moral dilemmas throughout the stories. In the short story “Gregory” by Panos Ionannides, the soldier decides to follow his ethics. In the story “Just Lather That’s All” by Hernando Tellez, the barber has chosen to go towards his morals. Both the soldier and the barber portray that they both need to make decisions that are wise.
The first chapter in Who Owns the Ice House is all about choice. There was a quote from the author that states, “The ability to choose the way we react to our circumstances is perhaps the greatest power that we have” (Taulbert 2010). This in my opinion is a very true statement. Our choices are what define us and set us apart from other people. As taulbert talks about in his book, people who dream and have great ideas either choose to do
We make important choices everyday that can affect our futures. Whether it is deciding what to eat for lunch or deciding what college to go to, these decisions can affect our lives in many ways. Choice is the act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities. By making a smart choice, your health and welfare can be much better but if you make a bad choice, you future can be different than what you intended it to be. Whether it is a mild choice or a major one, choices can affect the way your life unfolds in the future. In the book, The Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings, the main character Brady Parks is faced with a major dilemma. He has to make a decision to either turn in is friends for murder or to live
... is to have a choice, and the more choices one has, the more free one is. A choice is an opportunity to choose; if I have a choice between A and B, then if I choose A, I get A, and if I choose B, I get B. (Arneson, 1996).
Depending on what type of person you are, there are decisions that you have to do as an individual to start or complete your life, and this takes most of your life because without decision making, you wouldn’t know what to do with your life. The truth is decision making is not that hard and can be easy depending on what type of person you are. With factual evidence and good research, Malcolm Gladwell, the author of Outliers, builds a more convincing argument than Krakauer, the author of Into the Wild and here are some examples why.
The ethical and moral decisions made by people are what mold our future, but it is when these decisions are made without careful consideration that people tend lead themselves down a path of destruction. In Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" and Joseph Whitehill's "The Day of the Last Rock Fight" the ethical and moral decisions made by the character in the stories are conducted without proper thought. They choose to do these dreadful acts based on things such as blindly following tradition or even out of anger and as a result end up paying the price.

“It would not matter for a new child's toy. But later it does matter, doesn’t it? We do not dare to let people make their own. Not safe, the Giver suggested. Definitely not safe, Jonas said with certainty. What if they were allowed to choose their own mate? And chose wrong?”(98) Rather, a person is free when they make their own decisions for themselves. When a person has freedom and make their own choices may they make mistakes, but from the mistake that person will grow into a better individual. “And here in this room, all alone, I re-experience them again and again. It is how wisdom comes. And how we shape our future.”(78) So, personal choice allows a person live the way they want by choosing what they think is best for them. Personal choice allows a person to have freedom which helps them to live a true and happy life with their own eyes. Lastly, personal choice is important because it lets people have freedom, to choose for themselves and live the way they want to live.
Humans live in a world in which every day they encounter numerous choices. The way they decide and the outcomes of their decisions define their lives. Their day to day life essentially revolves around the choices they make. As a whole, a community benefits or suffers from the outcomes of its choices. Freedom of choice is the grant to an individual or community to make its own choices out of free will and without restrictions (Pereboom,2003). This is essay will discuss that though freedom choice leads to variety in life, it does not necessarily guarantee satisfaction. It will also argue that although some choice is undoubtedly better than none, more is not always better than less. It will then consider the implications of the paradox of choice for individuals in the market place and education, and for society in politics.
Life is something that we can give or take and the choices that people make decide this.
Ever thought about who controls the decisions you make regarding your daily activities? You may think you control every aspect of your life, but some philosophers have questioned such notions. Many schools of thought explain the analogy of free will, and they present the argument of whether we have the freedom to act or other causes and effects determine our destiny. Free will in this context is defined as the freedom to choose and act where there several alternative courses of action. Theologically, the concept of free will is presented as the power to make decisions on our own without necessarily been influenced by external or predetermined courses.

It is how our everyday decisions are made. Every individual’s mind is free from making choices, but it is influenced within or without the society. Elements that effect our decisions such as the people around us, the situation we are into. For example, parent can limit their children’s options by controlling every aspect of their life. Especially Asian American children who born in a traditional Asian family have to study a “good” major, go to a good college, or get good grade in order to please their parent. Because they were born in America, “they are exposed to freedom of speech, freedom to choose and well freedom to everything,” but “they cannot exercise their freedom to their full extent” (“Asian” 2015). Other than parent, friends are also another element that shapes our will. Friends tend to do many activities together, and in order for that to happen, they need to have the same idea. If you are belong to a group of friends that most of them want to go to the beach for summer, but you want to go to the mountain, you would have to follow the decision of the majority. It does not mean that we do not have free will to make our own choices. We could choose not to study what your parents tell you to and study what you like or you could decide to go to the mountain like you want, but the responsibility we have to take on for our decisions are not always what we want. We might have a fight with our parent or our friendship could be destroyed. Circumstances play another important role in determining our will. If you are sitting on a full bus and there is a pregnant woman standing next to you, you would let her take your sit because that is what most people do. Another example of this is when you are looking to buy a house. You might want to get a big and nice house for your family, but the price of the house is based on your financial situation. Therefore, whether

When growing up in this day, with many of our fellow men and women trying to get a taste of the good life. They will try to obtain happiness in very different ways with how they treat each other. The choices I have made have given me great opportunities to create a better and more fulfilling life for me. The reason I believe that choices affect our lives so greatly is because most of us our given a fair chance in todays world. An example from my life is being able to get over family problems with my dad. I made a life choice not to have contact with him because of the man I saw when I was a child. The troubles in my family will help me be a strong and more independent person throughout my life. Having independence will help me continue to grow into a hopefully more successful adult. Making the choice in not having contact with my father was a difficult decision. It was hard to keep a relationship with my real brother because he still keeps in touch with my dad. My older brother may look down on my choice, but I believe that I made a better choice. In the future I may have regretted in not speaking to my father, but for right now I think it is better to cut all communication with him. Being able to make a hard choices in cutting communicati...
