Effects of Peer Pressure
There was a man named Troy who lived in Oklahoma. Troy grew up in a Christian home and was considered to have a great testimony with his community and local church. He worked at a factory about fifteen miles out of his home. Well one day after work, Troy’s buddies decided to take him out to get a couple of drinks. Troy was a struggling alcoholic, the reason why he was so respected is because everyone thought he beat alcoholism. After a night of laughter and drinking Troy was left to drive by himself to his house. On the way home he passed out and ran right into oncoming traffic, yet he was not hit by another car. Troy hit a tree but on the passenger side of his car. He was unharmed and very grateful that he didn’t hurt anyone or himself. The biggest influence in our lives are the people that surround us. So like Troy a lot of people are apt to give in to peer pressure that involves their struggles. Peer pressure either has a negative effect or a positive effect, but peer pressure should not affect the Christian in spiritual matters.
To start off, negative peer pressure can be really harmful to a person. Negative peer pressure is when people who are considered as friends attempt to pressure or as far as bully someone into doing something that will either hurt them, put them in a bad situation, or hurt someone else. Taking Troy as an example, when his friends pressured him into doing something he struggled with it left him in a situation where he could of hurt someone or himself. Sometimes peer pressure though can be done in an effective manner for the right reasons.
Positive peer pressure can be really helpful to a person who lacks the motivation to do something that they need to get done or doing something that will benefit the person being pressured. When a person surrounds themselves with people they know will encourage them and help them make smart decisions in their lives, thats when peer pressure can be a positive thing. If a college student is struggling to do their homework for a class due to laziness or inability to focus. The college student’s friends can come together and encourage him and remind him that he needs to do his homework to do well in school so he can have a chance at a better life.

Peer pressure is doing something that is not quite normal, but your friends pressure you into the situation because they do it. This definition of peer pressure is something that is always happening, especially with the world changing each day. Things like tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, are all possibilities that peer pressure is related to. However, in the texts “Shooting and Elephant” by George Orwell and “No Witchcraft for Sale” by Doris Lessing demonstrate peer pressure among many thing; however, there are many solutions resulting in good things compared to the bad things that have happened. Solutions to peer pressure in these texts could be many things, but the three that would work best would be: ignore the person, walk away, and lastly, know that you should not do anything you do not feel comfortable with.
One should remember that not all peer pressure is bad, although that is mostly what you see today. Good peer pressure needs to be done more, because why would you want to make someone do something bad, instead of helping them do something good and impacting them, because honestly who would want a worse world rather than a better one? Truly the way to improve our lives as human beings lies on peer pressure, it is at the core of ways we can make a change for a better, and not more for the
... instead of following the majority. The issue of peer pressure can relate to teens, as they are in constant pressure to be ‘cool’ or to be in the ‘in’ group. It does not really promote individualism, so people cannot develop their own ideas but rather follow the leader of their group.
According to Reachout.com, there are two ways peer pressure affects teens. Those ways are directly and indirectly. For direct pressure it is having
Peers are one of the most influential agents in this stage. Your peers could pressure you into very reckless behavior. Peer presure is a very dangerous thing and could lead to an adolecent taking a different path than the one that they wanted. In some cases, however, peer pressure can be beneficial. If you have many peers that are all planning on going to the same college and they have asked you to join, you may feel obligated, or pressured, into doing better in your schooling to receive the grades you need to go to that college. The peers you have can also influence you without using peer pressure. If you have a group of peers that you socialize with on a daily bases, you start to act like them which can help you or hurt you depending on the peers you have chosen to interact with. Another part of the peers that you socialize with, and acting like them, is that those peers are who define you whether you like it or not. The saying You are who you hang with applies to this
When an individual take on the behaviors, attitudes, and styles of their peers because of the pressure of fitting in, this is peer conformity, also known as peer pressure. In most cultures the amount of time we spend with our peers tends to increase, as well as the effect they provide for support. Peer influence can start as soon as the third grade for some an...

“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” (Dr.Seuss). Society often thinks of peer pressure as a negative implement. Often times the community imagines peer pressure as teen influencing one another to experiment with drugs, alcohol, and sexual intercourse. But really all peer pressure is, is the encouragement of changing values and behaviors of an individual. Peer pressure can be thought of as positive for teens, because it allows and individual to become a leader in an environment, strong encouragement to work hard in school, and lead a healthy lifestyle.
However, peer pressure depends more on who the peers are than the pressure that comes from them. In other words, the negative effects of peer pressure can only be blamed on those who act as bad influences. So, it follows that the type of people we surround ourselves with determines whether our experiences with peer pressure are positive or negative. If we surround ourselves with good influences and people who share our values, it is more likely that the peer pressure that we are affected by will be beneficial. It is not peer pressure itself that can be dangerous. Rather, it is the people who are around
"Be yourself, not your idea of what you think somebody else's idea of yourself should be." --
Basically, the difference between negative and positive peer pressure is the outcome. The reverse of the situation above is negative peer pressure. The situation itself is positive peer pressure. Or is it? What if a teen really doesn't like sports, but pushes himself to do it to please his friends or to be accepted? Therefore, he probably doesn't do to well at it, and gets only jabs at hi...
Everyone at one point or another has desire to fit into a group, whether it is friends, or something else. This is in our nature and this is what makes us humans. In whatever group they are, they wanna feel secure and have a sense of belonging to that group. But what if one’s so called friend betrays the individual or start doing things which are wrong and force the person to do it with them? This is what negative peer pressure is - trying to mess with the minds and forcing them to be an acquaintance with something which is illegal and wrong.
Peer pressure can be both a positive and negative influence and will challenge us do things whether they are right or wrong. This is left for you to determine. Peer pressure can influence several areas in your life like; academic performance, who you choose for friends, it can influence who you mat choose for a boyfriend or girlfriend, it can influence decisions about sex, it may change your feelings about alcohol and drug use, and it can even determine your fashion choice.
When you are a teenager and you have friends that ask you to do something for them and you do not then they get mad. Then think you are a loser and that is ever person's nightmare, to not be liked. Peer pressure is no piece of cake. It is like choosing the wrong thing for what you think is right at that very moment, and then regretting it afterwards, because your parents find out. But most would not care about what they do wrong or right. Unless there is a chance of parental disappointment, and a lot of the time that is the case.
