The Effects Television Violence Has on Children
Television has both positive and negative effects on children between the ages of two and five. Some research shows that violence in the media can be linked to aggressive behavior in children. Though, some researchers disagree with this statement and believe that there are other factors, besides television, which cause children to become violent. The following essay will reflect both sides of this argument.
Violent television shows lead to violence in children between the ages of two and five. A study conducted by Albert Bandura concludes that violence in the media can lead to aggressive behavior. In this study, the experimental group was shown a cartoon where the characters acted in a violent manner, while the control group was not. When given a large inflatable doll to play with, the experimental group punched the doll, while the control group ignored it. Likewise, another study showed that the murder rate in the United States dramatically increased when the television became more available (Westrup). Violence in prime-time television has considerably increased since 1994. Even though TV shows have a rating system, many are overlooked as being aggressive. Violence is shown to children as being "desirable, necessary and painless" ("Children") which is a danger to children this age. In much of The Things They Carried, stories are retold time and time again. One reason for this is the idea of keeping a story’s story-truth alive. In “Good Form,” O’Brien differentiates what he calls story-truth from happening-truth. Story-truth seems to give us a better understanding of O’Brien’s sentiment in a particular story even though the story itself may not be true at all. On the other hand, happening-truth is what actually happened in the story, but may not contain as much emotional authenticity as story-truth. According to O’Brien, story-truth is therefore truer than happening-truth. Relating back to storytelling, O’Brien retells stories continuously to maintain their sentiment and emotional value. Without this continuous repetition, this sentiment fades away and the emotional value of the story is lost.

The effects of television violence and children can vary according to the child. There are various effects, both physical and psychological, that can occur. First of all, the child, through his years of watching television, may develop the concept that violence is a way to solve problems. The watching of these television shows is where most of the children pick up this aggressive mindset they have. It is to be said that eighty percent of what you learn when you are a child, is from what you see. That in it can become very dangerous to the child in many ways.

Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle in 1906 which highlighted the horrors of working in meat packing plants and the insanitary way the meat was handles. And in that same year, congress stated that all of the livestock that was shipped to foreign markets and across state lines would subject to inspection. But this was relevant to about sixty percent of the meat processed and many of those inspectors were paid off to look the other way. In 1967 another stride was made with the Wholesome Meat Act of 1967. This act required meat packers to follow the regulations set by the federal government for meat standards. However, federal standards for meat production were still loose. The most substantial improvement for meat inspection happened in 1981 when the USDA was formed. This federal organization tests for ninety-eight percent of the meat in the United States. Even though the USDA is a federal institution, it still is swayed by cattle industry lobbyist with donation money to head UDSA members. ("Meat-Packing Industry") In 2008 the United States enacted a farm bill. This however, did not solve the huge subsidies large farm companies are given. In fact, it gave large farms a number of ways to can receive government payments. Just as spouses can put all of their investments into on members name, farm owners can do the same. As a result, the spouse with the lower income can receive these farm subsidies. It is estimated that 40 percent of the land lords, who lease the land to small farmers, will lose subsidies based on income. These landlords still have the option to raise the lease on the farmland and thereby enacting these subsidy losses indirectly onto the farm tenants. Lastly, it allows large farmers who near the income limit to purchase more land to incur federal and state deductions.
In an article written by Kevin D. Browne and Catherine Hamilton-Giachritsis out of Lancet, dated 2/19/2005, Volume 365 in issue 9460, on page 702 a collection of research shows short-term effects increasing the likelihood of aggressive or fearful behavior in younger children, especially in boys. It also shows research stating that there is a very weak correlation directly between media violence and acted out aggression. This article basically states that violent media being watched by children does impression and arouse some, but does not associate strongly with violent acts. This would help explain the fact that millions of kids watch violent television shows and remain nonviolent.
As early as 1958 investigations were being conducted of the effects of television on children. During this time, the researchers found that most of the television content was extremely violent. In almost half of the television hours monitored, the programs main focus contained violence. The common theme that was seen throughout the programs were crime, shooting, fighting, and murder. The universal definition of violence used was, "Any overt depiction of the use of physical force, or the credible threat of such force, to intend to physically harm an animated being or group of beings." In this investigation, Wilbur Schramm concluded that under some conditions, some violent television could effect some children. For the most part, most television is neither helpful or harmful to most kids under most circumstances. As you can see this conclusion is quiet vague, and does not give a lot of crucial information for us to correct and improve. Schramm and his colleagues came up with a solution for parents to provide a warm, loving, secure family environment for their children, and they would have little to worry about.

Furthermore, television violence causes aggressive behavior in children. Many people believe that children who watch violent television programs exhibit more aggressive behavior than that exhibited by children who do not (Kinnear 23). According to the results of many studies and reports, violence on television can lead to aggressive behavior in children (Langone 50). Also, when television was introduced into a community of children for the first time, researchers observed a rise in the level of physical and verbal aggression among these children (Langone 51).
