People often tend to pay attention to other people’s habits rather than their own, and usually fail to notice how much their words or actions can have a negative effect on the people around them. In the article, Mind Your Own Plate, and in the book, So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed, authors Abbey Sharp and Jon Ronson talk about how much shaming goes on around the world. They talk about how most people aren’t aware of the fact that they are shaming on other people so rudely over things that they should not be worrying about in the first place. Publicly shaming other people has become so common in today's society that everyone has started to do it without thinking about the effect it will have on the other person, and their feelings. In the article, Mind Your Own Plate, author Abbey Sharp talks about diet shaming and how everyone spends too much time trying to convince others what to eat. Even though the Mind Your Own Plate article is about people shaming others based off of what they eat, social media is always tied in with the fact that this is occuring in the first place. In the article, Sharpe says, “people are more likely to judge other people’s eating habits because they’re uncomfortable with their own” (Sharp). Just like publicly shaming someone on social media, the person shaming others on what they eat are usually uncomfortable with themselves. Most often the ones that are shaming others must have some kind of insecurity of their own since they think that shaming others is a good idea. Sharp proves this point by saying, “people who food shame are jealous that they don’t have a strong sense of self and relationship with their body and food”
