By definition, Homicide, is “the killing of one human being by another”. In the United States, Homicide is considered the most severe infraction in the Law and the most publicized. Anywhere where there is a television, newspaper or computer that is accessible to the news, Homicide is a recurring story which captures the audience’s attention. Music, movies and television all have highlighted this infamous act to gain views. Homicide definitely is the most groundbreaking offense due to the way it affects others besides the victim of the crime. Homicide has long lasting emotional, physical and physiological effects of the family and friends of the deceased.
Due to this fact, Homicide is attempted to be studying leaving many researchers to ask

Social pressures and positions that people are put in to by those pressures cause them to act out and commit homicide. This can best be explained by Social strain theory which will better help explain why people commit murder. Social Strain theory is not the explanation for all murder however it plays a very integral role.
Homicide is definitely a problem for society. Cities like Chicago and Compton deal with murder on a daily basis. Police Departments have specific units just to handle murder and the elements that come with it. Homicide also goes hand in hand with politics. Usually, violent, crime ridden cities are the hot bed issues among the candidates that run them. Just recently, in the presidential race in 2017, the problem of Chicago and their skyrocketing murder rate was discussed. Federal assistance was discussed in order to help quell the murder rate. Obviously murder doesn’t just end someone’s life but also figuratively ends a part of the life of the family and friends. Due to all the different demographics that make up Homicide anyone can be a victim of this heinous crime at any time. Homicide being such a pillar of pop culture and the news, and movies makes this crime such a fascinating topic to discuss and

The report goes on to highlight characteristics including but not limited to, poverty, job access, immigration, vacancy rates, evictions and employment rate as contributing circumstance to an increase in neighborhood crime. The study conducted by HUD states that money is a common factor. Poverty rates and overall income inequality are direct links to neighborhoods that experience higher rates of violent crimes and homicides. This indicates that an individual may be more likely to offend based on the more they are negatively affected by social strain. The study points out that usually these neighborhoods are comprised of minorities including African Americans and Hispanics. Minorities already are victims of negative social structure in addition to neighborhoods that are negatively impacted making minorities at greater risk now only to commit murder but also to be the victim of violent crime and homicide. The HUD study is quick to state that strong social organization, job opportunities and residential stability are all characteristics that can help stabilize a neighborhood in social strain. This research study conducted by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is a perfect example of how negative social structures can wreak havoc on a
Burglaries, robberies, and shootings, all of which may leave victims or innocent bystanders severely hurt or dead, are now frequent enough to concern all urban and many suburban residents. Living in a dangerous environment places young people at risk of falling victim to such malicious and aggressive behavior observed and learned from others. Social institution such as education, family, religion, peer groups, etc., play a major role in the influence of crime in the urban neighborhoods that Anderson describes. As said in the essay, "although almost everyone in poor inner-...
Looking back at the number of homicides in the city of San Jose, CA for the year 2000 it was 20, then there was an average increase of 8 murders per year for the next 8 years. Then in 2010, despite a population increase of over one hundred thousand people, there were only 20 murders in the city of San Jose. Now in 2011, up to the month of July, there have been 26 homicides, which means based upon the current rate San Jose is on track to have more than 50 homicides in 2011, which would theoretically be over a two decade maximum. Now despite having lived in a small town, I consider San Jose as a home away from home because I go there often. I have had a job there and my dad has worked in San Jose for 28 years. In 2009 the San Jose area was rated as the seventh safest area in the country and when that happened it made me feel thankful that my family and I have lived in such a safe area. Yet nowadays it seems like I have been reading about a different murder every week, which has caused me to ask many questions about the possible causes of this rise in murders. From the research I have done, the cause seems to be a rise in gang violence and rival gang murders. In San Jose, the two rival gangs, Norteños and Sureños, have begun to be bolder with their killings as shown with the already high and rising murder rate of 2011. Solutions must be determined in conjunction with the San Jose Police Department and governmental gang task forces to establish the best course of action to stop the continuing rise in violence (Associated Press).

The act of ending a man or woman’s life, whether intentional, or unintentional, is one that can very rarely be justifiable. That being said, however, I do believe there are some instances where homicide can be socially accepted. Julius Caesar was a great leader, strategist, and thinker. On the 15th of March, 44 B.C., he was stabbed by members of the Roman Senate and bled to death. This gruesome homicide has been reviewed by many historians, but the most famous account is “Julius Caesar” by Shakespeare.

The authors analyzed data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN), dividing the communities into neighborhood clusters (NCs) based on census indicators and geographical continuity. The residents were interviewed in their homes as part of the community survey and their responses were categorized into indicators and measures such as concentrated disadvantage, immigrant concentration, residential stability, social cohesion and trust, and informal social control (the latter two combined to form ‘collective efficacy’). Multilevel statistical models were then created with these and several other predictor variables. The primary results found here were that collective efficacy, defined as “social cohesion among neighbors combined with their willingness to intervene on behalf of the common good”, was negatively associated with violence and acted as a mediator between the association of concentrated disadvantage and residential instability, with violence. Even with the stated limitations that the analysis was cross-sectional and no causal relationship was proven, the simple message that comes forth from this study is that there is less likelihood of violence and crime in neighborhoods where the residents have better social ...
Crime has always been a hot topic in sociology. There are many different reasons for people to commit criminal acts. There is no way to pinpoint the source of crime. I am going to show the relationship between race and crime. More specifically, I will be discussing the higher chances of minorities being involved in the criminal justice system than the majority population, discrimination, racial profiling and the environment criminals live in.
In 1989 there was an appalling(or shocking) case where a man and a woman had both been killed. The man had been shot in the back of the head, and in several other places, including the kneecap, the woman was shot in the leg, the arm several times and the kneecaps as well to make it seem as if it were an organized crime. Later the
Relatively high rates of violence have been reported over the years among members of certain ethnic and racial groups and urban inhabitants. African Americans and Native Americans have comparatively high rates of assaultive interpersonal violence and homicide. Big cities continue to experience high rates of violence, focussed mainly among young black males in the United States.
Serial killers have captivated the attention of scientists from the first signs of their existence to modern day. Interested by these killers’ inhumane actions, researchers set out to determine the cause of such graphic, horrific crimes. The brain has been brought into question regarding the motivation of these cold blooded killers. After extensive research, abnormalities of both the chemical composition and material makeup have been identified within the brains of numerous serial killers. These differences are more than mere coincidence, they are evidence that killers do not think in the same way. The killers’ drives and motives are irregular, just as their brains are. Not only are these variations interesting, but they are also crucial to the justice system in regards to the punishment of past, future, and present sequential murderers. It is important that as a society we learn the differences in the mind of a killer, and also recognize and understand them. A serial killer’s brain greatly differs in function from the average citizen’s brain due to physical variations in the brain and a different chemical makeup.
Therefore, the community has informal social control, or the connection between social organization and crime. Some of the helpful factors to a community can be informal surveillance, movement-governing rules, and direct intervention. They also contain unity, structure, and integration. All of these qualities are proven to improve crime rate. Socially disorganized communities lack those qualities. According to our lecture, “characteristics such as poverty, residential mobility, and racial/ethnic heterogeneity contribute to social disorganization.” A major example would be when a community has weak social ties. This can be caused from a lack of resources needed to help others, such as single-parent families or poor families. These weak social ties cause social disorganization, which then leads higher levels of crime. According to Seigel, Social disorganization theory concentrates on the circumstances in the inner city that affect crimes. These circumstances include the deterioration of the neighborhoods, the lack of social control, gangs and other groups who violate the law, and the opposing social values within these neighborhoods (Siegel,
Some of the perpetrators are the caregivers to spouses who are chronically ill. Another involves marriage, lovers who have lived together for many years. The main question, which remains unanswered is “why can some wake up one morning and decide to take away another person’s life”. According to Chermack & Taylor (1995), most of the perpetrators are usually mentally ill and challenged with extreme psychological problems. They may be suffering from strong stress and depressive disorder that affects their perception and feelings towards life. Although these people face blame for their undesirable actions, it is beneficial to make an effort to understand their problem (Kaukinen, 2002). Solving their alarming problem would significantly reduce the crime rates in the society and encourage the realization of a better environment.
Edmund Kemper, a serial killer who killed his grandparents when he was fifteen years old once said "It was an urge. ... A strong urge, and the longer I let it go the stronger it got, to where I was taking risks to go out and kill people." Many people may ponder the question why serial killers feel the need to kill in the first place. Most psychologists say there is not one solid reason. Just like every snowflake is unique, every person’s motive for killing is unique.
Murder is considered a serious crime in our country. The loosely defined term of murder implies that a person who kills another human being with intent is known as being the worst kind of violent crime we see in our society. Any unlawful killing requires that a living person be killed and it does not mean that the guilty person feels any hatred or spite in order to plan and execute the act of murder. Moreover, the destructive acts that end peoples lives are classified as homicides which include manslaughter and first and second degree murder. More important, the justice system has put different labels on such crimes, but it also allows room for criminals to get away with murder.
The person who commits this crime is mentally unstable. An example of this is when the perpetrator sees their children as devils and that they must save everyone from themselves. Also, they can be psychotically depressed and see no other way out than killing their families, including themselves because they want to stop their pain from growing bigger. No forensic psychologists and criminologist can actually determine what the cause of the familicide was. Also they cannot determine the psychological traumas or the character of the perpetrator before committing the
