Pursuing higher education has a possibility of being exceedingly beneficial. By going to college, a person can earn a substantially higher wage in the workforce, create lifelong friendships and gain networks. College presents young adults with opportunities to grow intellectually and socially. Endeavoring the journey of getting a 4-year degree has its benefits, but like everything else, it can also have it downfalls. Depression is a health problem that affects many college students. Environment and life experiences also affect students risk for depression. College students are subject to many overwhelming challenges, which is often characterized by stress. (Depression and College Students, 2012) College students also likely adapting to homesickness living on their own for the first time, figuring out who they are and they belong, worrying about finances and experiencing conflict in relationships can lead students to feel isolated. The common idea of college comes in the form of the 4-year university. Going to a university, students are exposed to the “traditional” college experience, which is a unique experience that many people wish to have. The experience isn’t the only thing that draws people to this option, the more common reason that draws people to a 4-year university is the potential to make more money than a non-college graduate, and according to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2014 the average income of a young adult who worked full-time with a bachelor 's degree made approximately $49,900 a year, which is 66 percent higher than young adults with only high school credentials, who only make approximately $30,000 a year. Attending post-secondary school also has been proven, according to the population reference bureau, to improve a person 's overall health, “ For example, remaining life expectancy at age 25… is about a decade shorter for people who do not have a high school degree compared with those who have completed college.” (Hummer). So, attending a postsecondary school not only improves your income, but it can affect you physically also. Depression affects the way you feel, think, and executes the daily task, such as eating, working or sleeping. For an individual to be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks.
However on the other side of the spectrum college does have its benefits. A college places its students in real life settings away from home. It lets the students begin making decisions that they will deal with for their entire life.

That’s what makes this generation of students distinct from its predecessors, he said. That is why more students who cannot cope with these feelings end up at college counseling centers with “increasingly serious mental-health problems.” 15 to 20 percent of college students nationally were diagnosed with depression. The second most common diagnosis was severe anxiety. According to the article, it is not unusual for mental-health issues to become apparent during a student’s college years.
Sometimes students question themselves if college is really worth it? That question has many answers that only a student can answer and decide for him or herself. For some students college can have a positive, life-long outcome. However, there are many obstacles when it comes to college. A student has to be very dedicated in school, and they have to know how to manage their personal life, school and work. College seems like it has more negative effects than it does positive for some people. For the following reasons college is not worth the cost because it is very difficult to find jobs after graduating or they find a job that is not in their field, some students who are not academically prepared wind up dropping out of school and wasting their money and some students struggle to balance school life, personal life and work life. As a result these students end up dropping out of school.
Academic pressure is one of the more obvious reasons as to why suicides and mental illnesses like depression occur in many college institutions. Most colleges have become, and continue to become, more competitive each and every year. This stress alone can send the most intelligent student into a spiral of depression very quickly. Many first year college students face problems as they enter a new educational environment that is very different than that of high school. However, the common problem is that many first year students become stressed. For many students, college is supposed to be the most fun time of their life; however, their fun can be restricted if it is limited by stress and other mental illnesses. According to the National Health Ministries (2006), stress is caused by “greater academic demands,” the feeling of being independent from family, “financial responsibility,” homesickness, being exposed to meeting new people, peer pressure, “awareness of one’s own sexual identity,” and the abuse of drugs and alcohol (p. 2). However, the causes to first year students’ stress mainly include academic demand, parents, finance, and peer pressure.
Depression is an illness within itself that affects the “whole body”. (Staywell,1998) The body, feelings, thoughts, and behavior are all immensely altered when someone is depressed. It is not a sign of personal weakness, or a condition that can be wished or willed away. For some people depression is just temporary, but for others it can last for weeks, months and even years.
It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.

Studies have shown that many college students are not able to handle the stress while in school, which hinders the ability for the brain to act in a normal way (Shahrokh and Hales, 2003). If a person is unable to deal with the stress that one is being faced with, it will have negative consequences in terms of causing several psychological disorders (Canby et al., 2014). Entering post-secondary education is a completely new environment for students, as it can be tough for many to adjust to the new surroundings. There are many factors that cause stress when students enter college, as it can include having the ability to deal with lower marks (Struthers et al., 2000) and having to create a new social life. Once and if a social life is established, it can cause more stress among students because it can lead into peer pressure that results in risky behavior. In particular, peer pressure can cause alcoholism or drug abuse (Seiffge-Krenke, 1990) or it can also cause unprotected sex. Not only does stress revolve around peer-pressure, but it can also be caused by headaches and lack of energy. If a student is constantly staying up late to finish assignments or to study, it can cause headaches from the lack of sleep; thus causing stress.
