The Effect of World War One on Domestic Life World War One started in 1914. There were many reasons for World War One but the main reason was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand on July 28th in Sarajevo. Everyone thinks of the war as the fighting that went on in France but the war not only affected the soldiers who were fighting it affected the people at home as well who were forced to carry on with the normality of there everyday lives. These posters usually said your country needs you or something that made peopl... ... middle of paper ... ... were unable to work and many did not return, so the women continued with there work and they enjoyed it. In 1919 women were given the right to start working in any job in the civil service as well as any other job. Also more nurse surgeries were set up this gave another job opportunity to women. Women also were now allowed to stand for election. Women were allowed to be freer now, they smoked and drank in public and became known as flappers who wore short skirts, shorter than in the war and they went to dances where alcohol was being drunk. There skirts got shorter and many of there clothes more revealing. They were allowed to do a lot more things and they no longer had to go out with an escort. The war was over and all the threat from the other countries gone but there was lots more of changes yet to come.
