In a recent survey every teen involved said they feel stress coming from some area of their life. Stress on a teen’s life can come from many different places and lead to serious, damaging effects. The effects of stress on teenagers can bring serious long term effects from school, work and family but there are many ways to help teens deal with stress. For 16 year old Abby dealing with school, work, and her home life is not as easy going as it is for others. She lives in a household with her dad who is a single parent and her two younger brothers. She takes care of her younger brothers most of the time while her dad works the night shift. On a daily basis Abby experiences many different things that make her feel stressed. Abby’s alarm goes off at 5:45 she struggles to drag herself out of bed still exhausted from the responsibilities of yesterday. She hops in the shower and gets herself ready for the day. She then wakes up her two younger brothers, while they are getting ready she cooks them eggs and toast for breakfast and packs their lunches. She gets them out the door and takes them to school. Once she gets to school she starts to feel more pressure. As each class goes on and she finds out her homework for the night her stress starts to build. She thinks about how she is going to get it all done before she goes to work knowing that she has to take care of her brothers. She tries to make lots of friends but she finds herself much more mature than most of the other kids. After school she picks up her brothers and takes them home. She begins her homework but is constantly interrupted by her brothers fighting. At about 4:30 she prepares dinner, doing a little bit of homework every free second she might have. Take your time while doing things. “You may have become used to rushing around, but your child needs more time to adjust to changes and to take things at his own pace.” (Petty) another way for parents to help their stressed children is to let them know that they are doing a good job. Parents should show their children that they are proud and assure their confidence. Always give them your affection and give simple advice that is the best way. Teens will continue to struggle with stress but with the help of others we can make them feel less alone.

Stress is defined as a mentally or emotionally distracting condition occurring because of difficult pressures. Millions and perhaps even billions suffer everyday from stress and its effects. Stress affects a person's physical health; usually the symptoms are increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, irritability, and depression. This plague can affect all ages and both genders. The main reason why stress is so dangerous is because it can be fatal to a person's health. Not only can stress lead to many heart diseases, but also it could make a person panic-stricken. Although stress may look unconquerable or inevitable, it is possible to control it. There are many quick and easy steps for managing and limiting a person's stress. The key is patience and careful planning.

When individuals feel stressed their bodies respond by releasing chemicals and hormones into the blood. These chemicals and hormones can trigger various damages to the body. This includes damages to the body’s physical, mental, and emotional state. To avoid further damage to the body, stress needs to be managed in a healthy manner. If stress is not dealt with for a prolonged period of time, its presence is debilitating.
Most people do not understand how much stress a typical high school student carries with them on a daily basis. There are innumerable stereotypes that are aimed at teenagers all the time such as, being lazy, bad drivers, always on the internet, or "we have got it easy". Newsflash people! Stereotypes are not proven facts, they are just beliefs created by other people. There have been multiple studies conducted to show that high school students are stressed. For example, In May of 2013 there was an article called, One in three teenagers suffers chronic stress, and it explained that thirty percent of high school students were overwhelmed with stress and considered it to be serious. Stress can affect a high school student in a good way and, or a bad way. Stress in students come from the pressure of having to be the very best in personal relationships between your family and peers, sports, and academics.
Once again, stress is a simply a fact of nature forces from the inside or outside world affecting the individual. Usually we think of stress as a negative experience. Although, stress is a neutral, negative, or positive affect. Stress is often caused by a job, relationship with others, challenges, or something where you need to reach a deadline. When thought about, it is said to be extremely surprising as to how many people really have stress in each individual’s life. People do not consider what the reasons are for the feelings and emotions they experience. There are all different types of stress, and stress can do a lot to a person. Each person also handles stress in a different way. Some can handle more than others, because every single person’s body works in a different way. Academic stress is very common in student’s lives. Many students assume that making the academic experience their first priority now, will increase the chance of success in the future. School is an important aspect in most teenagers lives and by being so important a teenager can become depressed very effortlessly at school or because of school. Academic stress can take complete control over a student’s life, sometimes leading to depression. Stress comes in many shapes and forms, it comes with the job of being human. My sources of stress come from the major parts of my life; academic pressure, social settings, and time management. As a high school student, high school in general is very stressful, but not only am I high school student I am also a college student. Double the responsibility means double the stress.
