The effect of concentration on the rate of reaction between sodium thiosulphate and dilute hydrochloric acid
This investigation is about rates of reaction and what affects them.
In this case I am going to look at hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulphate which is a precipitation reaction causing the solution to go 'cloudy'. They react as in the equations below:
sodium thiosulphate + hydrochloric acid -> sodium chloride + sulphur + sulphur dioxide + water
Na2S2O3(aq) + 2HCl(aq) -> 2NaCl(aq) + S(s) + SO2(g) + H2O(l)
A reaction will only occur where the particles of the reactants meet and combine. This is called the collision theory. For a reaction to occur particles have to collide with each other. Only a small percent result in a reaction. This is due to the energy barrier to overcome.
Only particles with enough energy to overcome the barrier will react after colliding. The minimum energy that a particle must have to overcome the barrier is called the activation energy, or Ea. The size of this activation energy is different for different reactions. If the frequency of collisions is increased the rate of reaction will increase. However the percent of successful collisions remains the same. An increase in the rate of reaction can be achieved by increasing the frequency of collisions. Therefore to increase the rate of reaction it is necessary to cause more particles to collide harder and collide more often. There are several ways to do this and these make up the factors for this experiment. They are listed below along with predictions as to their affect on the reaction.
Possible Factors
To make sure I carry out a fair test I will only change the concentration of sodium thiosulphate. I will keep the following factors the same.
Increasing the pressure. By reducing the volume in which the same amount of particles exist the pressure is increased. Once the same number of particles are in a smaller area there is less space in which to move and so the particles are more likely to hit each other. It is therefore possible to predict that increasing the pressure will result in an increase in the rate of reaction. I will not test this variable because we don't have the facilities to test it. However pressure is a continuous variable.
Catalyst. A catalyst is a separate substance that speeds up a reaction. After the reaction has happened it gets left behind. This makes this variable unsuitable for the type of experiment I am going to do.
Temperature. By giving the particles extra energy they will move faster. This means that they cover more ground and are therefore more
It is important however to note that the NH4 and K ions are still in
The Colonial Period (1607-1775) was essentially the first literary movement in America. The ideas portrayed within the period were expressed with two main styles of writing; Puritan and Classical. The puritan style was heavily influenced by God and the puritan's way of life. It was often short and too the point, and referred to ordinary things. The Classical Style was usually used to express analysis, theory, and practice. This style was delivered in a way that it would influence the audience. "Huswifery", by Edward Taylor offers a great example of the use of the Puritan style. He used a spinning wheel, and ordinary object, to compare his relationship to God. He tried to compare his feelings in an ordinary way that followed the puritan style, just like Anne Bradstreet in "To My Dear and Loving Husband". She used multiple metaphors to help explain how great her love was for her husband. Although emotion is not favored in the Puritan style, she vented them through her poetry. In the Classical style of writing, giving sermons was a common way of presenting information to people; and Jonathan Edwards is a great example. His sermons were direct and persuasive because he used literary devices that created images in the audience's heads. All of these stories helped to get people to start worshipping God again, thus giving the creation of the Colonial Period in America.
Food is a necessity in our lives; it provides us our basic biological needs; however, when it is misused it can be deadly. This is a problem faced in many western societies because the people of these societies prefer the processed fast food, over healthy foods. Over consumption of these fast foods can make consumers ill, obese, and can possibly shorten their lifespan. Many people in these societies believe the scapegoat is the diet itself, refusing to believe there are many other factors that contribute to the problem; however, there are many factors that come into play such as culture, personal responsibility, and a parsimonious food industries.
America, a country founded by the few for the millions as it stands today, following the ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as coined from the Declaration of Independence. Just like other national literatures, American literature was shaped by its historical and cultural aspect which roots back to the times of the natives, but the writing tradition begun with the arrival of colonialist so called English adventurous in the New World and evolved throughout centuries till today and many authors from all classes, male or female, black or white from the colonial to the contemporary genre have contributed to enrich and destroy various biases constructed by the norms.
Imbalanced, our lives are imbalanced. We do not have time to climb the ladder of success if we want to be home to raise our children. We do not have time to raise our children if we want to climb the ladder of success. There are not enough hours in the day to do all the things that we need to do to have a fulfilled life. We do not have time to cook a healthy meal from scratch. We grab a box of Hamburger Helper, a can of peas, and a bag of rolls and we have dinner. Exercise consists of walking between the car and the door and maybe a little wrestling around with the kids before bed. At work productivity is counted by how many hours you spend doing your job instead of the results that our produced in that time. Mindsets like this hold us back. Flexibility for the employee is the future to balancing our lives.
As the world around Americans changed, so did the characteristics of literature. For the first time in literary history, writers began to shun artificiality of society and seek nature as a refuge. Feelings and intuition began to override reason. Inspiration was found in myth, legend, and culture. Faith was put in inner experience and power of the imagination. Innocence was preferred over sophistication. Individual freedom and the individual were the utmost important. Nature’s beauty was a path to spiritual and moral development. Most stories were set in exotic locales, supernatural realms, and the inner world of imagination (Arpin 144). For the first time, ordinary and outcasts were glorified. Not only d...
The Colonial Period began with the colonization America and ended when the Revolutionary War began. The Colonial Period consisted of Puritan Plain Style and Classical Style. Puritan Plain Style used plain language and made comparisons to everyday objects because the Puritans wanted to make clear and definite statements in their writing. In Puritan Plain Style short simple words were preferred compared to long elaborate ones in order to stress simplicity and clarity. Another reason for this simple style was because the Puritans believed poetry should serve God and only express useful or religious things. During the time of Puritan Plain Style, Americans lived to please God. Morals, Values, and Religion were the driving force during this time. The style of writing influenced, but also reflected the colonists’ beliefs and their current “American Dream.” In Edward Taylor’s poem “Huswifery,” he he used an extended metaphor to compare himself to a spinning wheel. He wished to be clothed in God’s grace and to share His love with others. This was exactly the mindset of the American peopl...
Rate of Reaction - Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric Acid. Aim Investigation, to find out how the rate of reaction between sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid is affected by changing the concentration. Introduction I must produce a piece of coursework investigating the rate of reaction, and the effect different changes have on them. The rate of reaction is the rate of loss of a reactant, or the rate of development of a product during a chemical reaction. It is measured by dividing 1 by the time taken for the reaction to take place.
Effect of Temperature on the Rate of Reaction between Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric Acid Investigation Chemical reactions are used in our everyday life, they literally keep us alive. They are used in food, respiration and everywhere else in the environment. A chemical reaction mainly occurs when reactants react together to produce a new product. The speed at which this reaction takes place is called the rate of reaction. The product produced has a number of particles in the solution that has formed from the reactants.
Fast Food has progressively taken over dining destinations in the previous decade. The availability and convenience that fast food restaurants offer has changed the way food is acquired worldwide. Eating out was previously sought as a reward for families to enjoy indulgent food without meal preparation nor the hassle of cleaning the kitchen after dinner, but in recent lustrums, period of 5 years, fast food chains have been the normality for dinner across the globe. Fast Food is a healthy alternative to a home cooked meal.
The period in American Literature known as the American Renaissance was a time of great change in our country. It was an age of westward expansion and social conflict. Americans were divided on such volatile issues as slavery, reform and sectionalism that ultimately led to the Civil War. Emerging from this cauldron of change came the voice of a new nation - a nation with views and ideals all its own. The social, economic, technological and demographic revolution that was taking place at this time set the stage for a new era of writers. The voice of the nation found a home, first, on the pages of the newspaper. It was there that the hopes, fears and political views of Americans were represented. The newspaper united Americans by giving them a vehicle to voice their opinions and concerns. The result was a newfound spirit of solidarity that opened the door to the first great period of creative writing in America known as the American Renaissance.
Between the years of 1865 and 1914, American literature was mainly comprised of three writing styles: realism, regionalism, and naturalism. Realism aims to portray life realistically. Though realism...
The notion of work-life balance has evolved greatly becoming ambiguous over time, along with the struggle of achieving it. It is important to realize that work-life balance can mean different things to different people. It can change and mean different things at various points in people’s careers. Work-life balance is the relative importance of work and personal life to a particular individual (work-life Balance, 2016) . With my own literal interpretation of the meaning behind this term, work-life balance is basically trying to find an equal level of work outside life. It is about having a perfectly-optimal career along with a perfectly-optimal life. But with close introspection you come to realize that work
The strategies employers offered to help employees achieve work-life balance varied dependent on the type of company and the resources available. Some companies have policies designed to encourage the balance, while others have yet to take action. Six strategies employers should consider are supportive work cultures, organizational leave, flexible work arrangements, work from home, on-site childcare, and technology use.
Food safety culture society can be considered of comparable significance (3)to administrative consistence and client benefit . On the off chance that any of these three perspectives fizzle , the business itself could come up short (Ungku Zainal Abidin et al , 2013 ) . Numerous businesses additionally lift security to the same or even a larger amount of significance than these as no business can exist without representatives . Food safety highlights in the work environment is another great case of the significance of value affirmation in the public eye today (Taylor , 2011 ) . Regardless of whether it is the honesty of a security bridle for working at statures or the water testing for the city , quality estimations , preparing and framework arrangement can all straightforwardly influence workers and even open (4)wellbeing (Griffith , 2012 ) . Food safety is a logical idea portraying and dealing with , readiness , and capacity of foods in ways that anticipate foodborne disease . This incorporates various schedules that ought to be taken after to stay away from conceivably extreme (5)wellbeing perils (Roberts et al , 2012 )
