Television, or screen time, has become a large part of today's society. Whether it's by way of smart-phones, a television, a computer, or a tablet, screen time has negative effects on the cognitive ability of children and adolescents. It has even been proven that it can lead to Alzheimer's disease when a person, in the age range of 20-60 years old, views an hour more than the recommended amount of screen time a day (Sigman 14). In children, the amount of screen time viewed has a relationship with the likelihood of developing a deficit in his attention span; the longer a child views screen time, the more likely he is to be diagnosed with an attention disorder. Screen time, or television, can cause attention disorders and other problem with cognitive abilities in children and adolescents that effect the education they can comprehend.
According to The American Academy of Pediatrics( AAP) that children under the age of two, should not consume any amount of T.V and the children over the age of two should only consume no more than two hours of T.V a day.(AAP 1999)

I grew up with a lot of media devices around me so there was a lot of screen time for me and my siblings. I dont remember as far back as 2 years old but I've always rememberd being in front of a television screen or playing on a Leapfrog. That didn't stop anything though. My siblings and I still spent plenty of time enjoying the outdoors and doing other fun activities such as playing school when we were inside. Media devices didn't effect us in a negative way. So I feel that children should not be restricted from spending time in front of media screens. They shouldn't be because it reduces anger and fear, improves vocabulary in toddlers and older children, and it builds online relationships and offers chances for social and contact learning. Screen time has become an everyday part of life.
I feel that "Screen Time Limits Are Vital for Children" has many good points to why we parents should limit screen time. "Between 2011-2013, children ages 8 and under more than doubled their use of media devices with screens. The increase for children under age 2 was even higher". I believe some parents let their children have more screen time to keep them occupied while doing daily chores, dinner ect. I as an uncle do not let my nephew have screen time while visiting. I encourage him to do other activities. I feel like children need to learn how to have fun without a electronics. I agree with this outlook of screens, 7.5 hours of screen time per day is way to much for a child even an adult.

The brain can only store so much information, if it has the choice to hold on to stimulating video games or something relevant such as information learned in school, the brain will choose the exciting stimulation. For children with developing brains they can have attention problems and a hard time setting boundaries for themselves and resisting impulses. A study at the University of California, Irvine that people who had multiple interruptions from their devices were not focused and became stressed. This ended up in short-term memory effects. This can affect people of all ages. Devices have a bigger impact on children because their brains are still developing. Under the section The Toll on Children, it talks about the life long damages that constant use of devices can have. The article says, “...that constant digital stimulation like this creates attention problems for children with brains that are still developing..”. One example that was provided was that a kid named Connor. He would sit at his desk for hours and try to do his homework, but he didn’t get anything done because he was distracted by his phone. Like many other kids, they don’t know how to function without their devices. This affects the children's brains because they can’t learn how to be independent. In a article that I read by Kathryn Doyle it say that more than 90 percent of girls and 80 percent boys reported using a cell phone in the hour before bed, and laptops were almost as common. So this cause students to be tired in school, and makes it hard to concentrate during classes. But, this doesn’t only affect teens, it also affects younger children.
