College students are traditionally regarded as rowdy, lazy, and stressed. These labels may hold some weight however one of the most overlooked things about college kids is how busy they are. The expectation of colleges is that students spend two to three hours outside of class studying for every credit hour. These lazy and stressed college students are spending the equivalent of a full time job studying, which can have dramatic effects on a student. College kids spend some much time studying how could they possibly have time to get involved? Well this may be apart of the reason students are so stressed out, because handling all of their own activities on top of school is a daunting task. The Academic and Campus Engagement Activity allows for students in GS 101 to explore their college while participating in activities they may have not thought of doing previously. I attended the lecture Tuesday, October 20th/27th from 9:00-10:00am.
The lecture is held in Foellinger Hall in tuesdays and thursdays. The lecture that I attended was econ 103 which is a class I will have to take in the future. This is why I chose to attend this lecture in particular. I thought if I’m going to take it I might as well see what it’s like. Also it happened that this class took place while I had no other obligations. I entered the lecture hall and realized there were far more people than I thought there would be. I have to say the best part of the activity was that I sat next to Jalen Coleman (a member of the basketball team). In class for the two days I was there they were reviewing perfect competition and the concepts that create perfect
competition. Currently I am enrolled in General Studies at the University of Illinois. This means that in the near future I will have to apply to a college and then decide on a major. My goal is to join the College of Business. In order to get into the college of business you must be some of the best of the best. This means doing very well in business core classes, like economics. With this weight upon my shoulders I will take any advantage I can get. Simply viewing the class for two days actually helps me more than I thought. I was able to see how the professor runs his class and what kind of work is expected. In addition to becoming familiar with the class getting a preview also allowed me to confirm that I have a great interest in business. With only four and a half hours of sleep I was able to wake up and go to a class that is not required. This alone made me feel pretty good but I also was engaged the entire class I was intrigued with the concepts that the professor was going over. Participating in an activity like this allows me to see that school isn’t always a chore. It is possible, no matter how much I may despise the work, to enjoy going to class and learning new concepts. This may seem arrogant that I haven’t appreciated my schooling up until now, however previous schooling was all mandatory classes. Now I am able to choose the classes that I have an interest in. Through this activity I now have a newly found appreciation for school. It makes everything seem much more manageable. These activities are designed to allow for students to explore in the university and get involved in things they are actually interested in. When these advantages are offered to a student they must take advantage of it. Attending this class has given me a new view about school. Which actually motivates me to go to other classes, even if I’m not signed up for it. This desire for knowledge is not something that I would have had without GS 101. I hope that this activity can keep me motivated to work throughout my freshman year, in the hope that I can earn entry into the College of Business.
In the novel, What the Best College Students Do written by Ken Bain, we learn about how college student goes through rough times in their college life. The author brings up a common issue that occurs in the academic life of college students. It is the need of having self confidence and self esteem. Bain believes that if a student loves and admires themselves it will give the student a better advantage of having a well-being lifestyle than all their other peers that are having difficulties. Many college students focus mainly on their grades other than the knowledges that they are learning in class. The idea of having perfect grades in all the subjects are limiting the students from approaching activities that they might be interested.
The multiple choices students have today in college have made the university a party environment, resulting in complacent students. Mark Edmundson raises important questions and makes valid points in this essay that are worth thinking about. If people don’t take a look at our present college system and start thinking outside the box, the college education system will continue on its downward spiral of consumerism. It is fun to graduate high school and go to college to party and to have a comedic professor, but there is so much more to college then having fun. Students entering college for the first time become concerned with their college life. The students are on their own once they enter college. There are no parents or guardians telling them when to do homework, when to go to bed, or how to eat healthy. These students are now responsible for how they are going to succeed in school and meet their own needs. From the beginning, these students wonder what their experience is going to be like and are they going to handle the demands of college?
The greatest advantage in participating in freshman learning communities is the chance to interact and socialize with a group of students known as a cohort. Lichtenstein (2005) noted that these programs are based on the premise that the better the student’s social involvement in the life of the college, the greater chance for academic success. Not only does this cohort of students assist in reducing the anxiety of the transition, but also gives students the social support needed to successfully progress through college (Engberg, 2007). Because of the small size, students are given a greater chance of participating, discussion, and overall getting to know one another. Students in learning communities not only tend to form their own support groups that extend beyond the classroom, but also spend more time together outside of class (Tinto 2000). Discussions outside of class, social activities, and study groups are all encouraged to participate in as a cohort.

Student participation in the annual Business Society Haunted House is essential for the future of this great event. Penn State DuBois has nearly one thousand students attending classes, but on average only fifteen students volunteer their time each night over the five-day period. As to me, taking this class is extraordinary compared to other choices I have ever done in my life. I could never hope to get the hang of anything like this earlier and the amazing and productive knowledge of Doctor G brings me. Whenever I come to his class, I feel the excitement to learn new things, new stories, and life lessons of Dr. G. It is hard to describe how amazement of his class could be if you had never been a part of his class. His analogies are descriptive and humor. Dr. G brings to class not only the lectures but also many valuable life lessons that contribute to improve oneself.

Every Elon’s student activities provide many opportunities to students. Some of those opportunities being developing leadership skills, feeling a sense of belonging and achievement, making new friends, gaining new experiences, impressing potential employers and graduate schools, and having fun. There are numerous influences that impact the academic performance of a student other than after school activities. However, this study will focus on the effect of extra curricular activities on academic performances. In many cases, participation in extra curricular activities positively influences attendance and connection to school. This study will investigate the impact of extra curricular activities that require a daily commitment over an extended period of time, greater than a month. Athletics is the dominant after school activity that requires a daily commitment; therefore, this study will involve student athletes as well as students who are involved in other extra curricular activities. Another reason why student athletes will be a large part of this study is that there may be a correlation between the skills necessary to succeed in athletics and academics (American Sports Institute, 1991).
Social Media has become a very essential tool in the society; in addition, it has a huge impact on communication and learning process.
