The Duality of Existence and Essence through St. Augustine and St. Thomas
We have been studying in the course of the class the evolution of thought in the Western Civilization. This study has of course started with the Greek thinkers and philosophers. Their way of thought has had a great effect on the way the whole western civilization approached life, and the fundamental concepts behind it. Plato is the philosopher that most probably had the most influence on the way thought has evolved in western society. But his reasoning put Essence above Existence, which is in contradiction with the faith that is promoted later on by Aristotle at first, and then by the arrival of Christian thought into the western world.
Plato was the first philosopher that promoted a mode in which Essence was the Urstuff, or what he would call the Good (he also called this the world of timeless ideas). Plato's division of reality and his theory of forms have influenced all further western thought, and have also found a way to influence Saint Augustine. Saint Augustine was trying to find a way of thought that would be in accord with his moral ideas and still would be somehow rational. He found that idea in Plato's ideas, and most especially in Plotinus' interpretation of those ideas in his Enneads.
Saint Augustine then converted to Christianity Plato's thought, since this thought put a higher being (that Saint Augustine identified as God) as the foundation of the universe, and thus this fit in the Christian dogma very easily. This is where Saint Augustine became somehow contradictory with himself, since his continuous attempts to make everything a theodicy, a justification of God's existence.
Where Saint Augustine's explanations and justification failed, Saint Thomas saw a fundamental flaw, and sought for an explanation, not in more attempts at theodicy, but in a totally different approach of the Christian dogma through the interpretation of Aristotle's works. Indeed, Aristotle, even though he was Plato's student and his intellectual follower, diverged on the construction of his universe. Aristotle believed in a more Existential point of view, in which "he could discover no decisive reason for denying that the world always existed instead of being created at a point in time." (S. Stumpf, 1994, p. 179). This is very contradictory with Saint Augustine's Essentialist view, and also contradictory with the church's dogma. Saint Thomas didn't contradict the church on many things though, since his interpretation of Aristotle retains the idea of the Unmoved Mover as God, and the fact that everything is therefore caused by God.
Saint Thomas of Aquainas may have been one of the greatest thinkers who attempted to bridge the proverbial gap between faith and reason. His Sacred Doctrine which was the initial part of his Summa Theologica was the basis for his conclusion about the existence of God. Aquinas tended to align his beliefs close with Aristotle's supposition that there must be an eternal and imputrescible creator. In comparison, Anselm's impressions were influenced largely by Plato. In his text Proslogion he outlined his Ontological argument that regarding the existence of God. It was simply that God was the ultimate and most perfect being conceivable, and that his state of existing is greater than not existing therefore god, being perfect in every way, must exist. This is where their paths divide, and although they essentially reach the same determination they paint the picture quite differently.
This paper will outline specific points in Saint Augustine’s Confessions that highlight religious views following the fall of Rome. Though Augustines views on religion may not reflect that of most people in his time period, it still gives valuable insight into how many, namely Neoplatonists,, viewed God and his teachings.
Augustine of Hippo was an early Christian philosopher who was born in what is now modern day Algeria and his writings have been a great influence on the development of Western Christianity. He was a bishop in the Hippo Regius of Roman Africa during the Patristic Era and is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers of the West (Mendelson). In his famous writing “Confessions”, Augustine recounts the first 35 years of his life and tracks his spiritual development and acceptance of Christianity. Books 1-9 are autobiographical, while Books 10-13 are analytical and interpretational of his faith. Book 10 of his confessions explores memory while 11 through 13 are his detailed interpretations of Genesis, in which the creation of the world is explained.

After his conversion, he refused to teach rhetoric. Yet, in the end, no matter what sin he had done Augustine found his savior. Which led him to write about how to convey God’s truth to diverse audiences and demonstrates that both the Bible and one’s own life are texts to be read and assessed against the true Cristian Doctrine. The last four books were like an appendix and offers an interpretation of the opening of the Book of Genesis. Aristotle and St. Augustine have both been influenced by Plato. Their philosophy on morality, politics, and the purpose of life has been platonically influenced. St. Augustine is the true heir of Plato because he has taken Plato’s ideal state, and revealed the implications of the lives that the citizens of the earthly city lead, in the City of God. Plato’s state is an ideal state, that would not function in reality. St. Augustine has taken Plato’s notions, and have furthered the implications of living a life that strives towards a common good. Plato’s view on existence can be understood by discussing his theory of Forms. The theory of Forms or Ideas is about the existence of ideas in higher form of reality, the existence of a reality inhabited by forms of all things and concepts. Plato used example of objects such as table and rock and concepts like Beauty and Justice to illustrate the notion of Forms. Plato further describes Forms as a being possessed by concepts. For example, Virtue has different characters; but they all have a common nature which makes them virtuous.

Thomas Aquinas was born into a rather noble family although having it been split by Aristotle for 900 years. Born in 1225 in Roccasecca,Italy his father Landolph, count, of Aquinas his father sent him to Monte Castro. There he received care from the Benedictines as well as excelled above his pupils not only in academics but also virtue. After five years in the Monte Castro he then advanced to the University of Naples where he received a interest in contemporary monastic orders as well as continued his study of Aristotle. He also found a strong interest in those who chose to pursue a more spiritual life opposed to being more laid back with their spiritual views. In 1243 despite strong resignation from his family he joined the Dominican monastic order at Cologin. His parents went as far as sending impure women to break his spiritual virtue. However he was able to withstand these temptations and preserve his vocation. When that failed it is said that his parents then went out to kidnap him in order to minimize his spiritual belief. Following a year of imprisonment he was able to hold onto what the church and University taught him. Thomas Aquinas was able to receive gods gift of perfect chastity therefore receiving the nickname “Angelic Doctor”. From 1245 to 1252, St. Thomas Aquinas continued his studies with the Dominicans in Naples, Paris as well as Cologne. He was ordained into priesthood in Cologne, Germany, in 1250. He then went to teach theology at the University of Paris. Under the instruction of St. Albert the Great, St. Thomas Aquinas earned his doctorate in theology.
