The Romans were so called religious people who were known for their love of violent and cruel forms of entertainment. This would all take place in the amphitheatre a big stadium that everyone would gather at to enjoy a fun filled day of killings and animal cruelty. I believe the games served a dual purpose that providing entertainment for the people and maintaining the political status of the emperor. Besides the entertainment aspect of the events, I believe it was a reminder to everyone warning them not to get out of line and follow the rules of the emperor. I think the purpose of these events were to make the gods happy in some sort of screwed up religious ritualistic way. They believed that the souls of the dead would appease the gods, so

Main Functions of the Games in Ancient Rome The 2 main kinds of games that took place in ancient Rome were those of ludi scaenici (theatre and plays) and those of ludi circenses (sports). From about 50 BCE to the year 200 CE, the Roman Empire was a powerful nation. Rome was the city that became the center of the Roman Empire and by 200 BCE Rome became a powerhouse. The Romans conquered Scotland to Spain, controlled the Mediterranean Sea, and established colonies in North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia Minor. By the year 44 BCE Julius Caesar became a Roman Emperor and Rome had a great military. Then around the 5th century CE the Roman Empire began to weaken. The primary reasons for the fall of Rome was because of the Roman Emperors, the Roman Army, and foreign invasion.
The Circus Maximus was a large place in Greece. The Circus Maximus was a horse chariot race running around a track. Almost like our NASCAR races today, these races where the biggest attraction in the day of the Greece. The citizens were greatly involved in the racing of the Circus Maximus.("Circus Maximus princeton.edu") Because so many people were involved with these races, they had to find a way to seat all of these people. The beast hunts were held in the Colosseum or the amphitheaters across the Roman Empire as the first event in the morning of The Games before the executions and gladiator games. The purpose of the beast hunts was to show the wealth of the editor, or giver of The Games, and for the Romans to show their political authority in being able to obtain animals from far distant places. Also, beast hunts symbolized the power of man's control over nature. For the Romans, greater numbers and varieties of animals demonstrated the extent of their power. For example, at the inauguration of the Colosseum, under the Emperor Titus, 9000 animals were slaughtered. The record number of animals killed was 11000 under the Emperor Trajen.
