The killing of the 20,000 Bottlenose dolphin in the Pacific Ocean in Taiji Cove, Japan is devastating and these killings are becoming an epidemic because the multi-million dollar a year aquariums and marine parks like SeaWorld are the main clients making demands for show dolphins. In the documentary The Cove,1 Richard O’Barry stated that “the aquariums request the best looking dolphins and for the other dolphins they are killed for their meat.” Although these dolphins are being killed the other few which hard to produce an approximate amount are kept alive for profit and are sold to Marine parks. “20,000 dolphins are killed every year between September through March,” Sea Shepherd3. Spear rods are used to kill the dolphins, and that technique turns the waters red with blood. Metal rods are now driven through the dolphins to cause paralysis.1 People should care about this topic because if the killings continue the side effect will be a rapid extinction of the Japanese Bottlenose dolphin, global mercury poisoning from consuming contaminated dolphin meat and major disruption in ocean ecology food chain. A journalist “Boyd Harnell2 there have been cases linked to Japanese children with birth defects because the mother has been consuming mercury contaminated dolphin meat.” This problem is occurring in the Pacific Ocean; the actual killings of the Bottlenose dolphins is in Japan, specifically the Taiji Cove.1 This cove is a naturally secluded lagoon and, this is where these butcheries happen.1 This problem is global because these carnages not only happen in Japan they happen in Peru as well, although, Japan is receiving much of the controversial heat. This is a local problem because of the secrecy and the governmental cover ups to help ... ... middle of paper ... ...ll them how the dolphins that do not survive are killed in great detail. Educate others on the link between the captive dolphin industry and the Taiji dolphin slaughter. Works Cited 1. Psihoyos L. Dir. O’Barry R. Actor. The Cove [film on DVD]. Madman: 2009 2. In the books Hatchet, Guts, and Island of the Blue Dolphins the characters all go through horrifying experiences. In Hatchet, a boy named Brian is forced to fly a plane after the pilot dies of a heart attack. In Island of the Blue Dolphins, a girl named Karana and her brother were left behind by their clan. In Guts, a man named Gary Paulsen answers emergency ambulance calls and witnesses many deaths from people.
I am sure almost all of you have either been to or heard of SeaWorld. Today I am going to tell you about what they do to their orcas that they are trying to hide. I chose this topic after watching a documentary called “Blackfish” that goes into the behind the scenes of how SeaWorld treats its animals. I have since done further research online to prepare for this presentation. This is an important topic because you should know what kind of company you are funding and behaviors you are endorsing when you go on your vacations to this destination. Today I am going to persuade you that SeaWorld is corrupt and maltreats its animals, specifically the orcas. First, I will talk about the specific way the orcas are treated and how it affects them

Currently, live whale performances have become well liked for tourists to visit. When they are there, they only see what they want to see and do not care or want to know all about the complications the whales go through just to make people smile. The documentary “Blackfish” exposes the truth about the whales, their habits, and why they act the manner they do when in captivity. The inhumane treatment of whales in captivity causes negative effects on the animals which, in turn, affects the humans who care for them.
The most effective piece of this documentary, however, was neither the structure of the film nor the specific questions that one is forced to answer regarding the ethical treatment of these killer whales, but the overall questions of whether or not these corporations should be allowed to continue their cycle of abuse toward the animals and whether or not we, as patrons, should encourage their behavior by giving them a monetary profit every day, every month, and every year. Ignorance is forgivable, but with the knowledge given in this documentary: the final two questions raised should be able to answer themselves.
In the past twenty years a large amount of bottlenose dolphin have been killed due to the tuna fishery. In the Eastern Pacific swim large schools of tuna, these shoals tend to be under herds of dolphins, for some unexplained reason. Because of this, fishermen can easily find schools of tuna. The tuna are being caught under purse seine nets, which encircles the shoals of tuna and then is pulled back on board the fishing vessel, catching both tuna and dolphin. Initially the mortality rate was 500,000 each year for dolphins alone. Although some efforts are made to encourage the dolphins to leave the net by backing down part of the net, which allows the dolphins to escape, there are still a large number of mortalities (Bryant). On the other hand, in the last few years there has been dramatic progress in stopping the fishing industries from using purse sine nets. It has been found that dolphins are in immediate danger of extinction if these fishing techniques don’t stop.
The quest to gain international agreement on ethical and legal norms for regulation of whaling has had a long and troubled history. The modern phase of global concern over whaling ethics and conservationist management originated in 1946, when the International Convention on Regulation of Whaling was signed. Thus, the International Whaling Commission was created. The International Whaling Commission was designed to control and mandate the whaling industry. From it’s beginning as simply a whalers club with scientific guidance, to the current day conservationist body, the IWC has undergone many revisions and transformations since the start.

In this research report I will discuss the Killer Whales unique characteristics; complex migratory patterns, how and why it is endangered, and most importantly how we can help them.
A bottlenose dolphin is an endothermic mammal that gives birth to live young. Bottlenose dolphins are the most common and well known type of dolphin. The name bottlenose describes this species of dolphin as they have a short, stubby beak (bottle-like shape). A bottlenose dolphin is a cetacean, which means it is a marine mammal. They are also one of the most-commonly studied cetacean because they live near coasts and adjust well to captivity. It’s Genus and Species names are; Tursiops Truncatus.
Is a dolphin a person? Most people would automatically dismiss the question, but in reality, this question can be discussed on a very complex level revealing that the definition of a person is not so black and white. Mary Midgley sets the stage to her narrative by telling the story of a specific court case that she uses as a reference on many occasions. In May of 1977, two men set free two dolphins who were used by the University of Hawaii’s Institute of Marine Biology for experimentation. Kenneth Le Vasseur, one of the men who was standing trial, told how these dolphins were suffering through unfair conditions such as diminishing food rations, isolation from other dolphins, and loss of toys. Based on this information, Le Vasseur and his counsel tried to use the “choice of evils defense” which states that an act, which would typically be considered unacceptable, would be allowed if it would lead to an avoidance of a greater evil or crime against “another”. This defense was rejected on the grounds that the judge declared that a dolphin was not considered to be “another” and instead it should be considered property. Today in our society, it is a common perception that a person or “another” indicates that you must be a human being. Midgley investigates this perception as well as the question of how do we classify what is and what is not a person as well as the moral implications that comes with the title.
Overfishing is a harmful practice, that will eventually lead to the collapse of aquatic ecosystems, if it’s not dealt with promptly. Overfishing emerges from the combination of our over consumptive society mixed with the great profits that come from hauling in a good catch. The consumers demand for fish in Japan seems to be at an increasingly high rate due to the enjoyment and cultural values that arise from sushi and other traditional dishes involving seafood. Approximately 23 percent of Japan’s protein intake comes from the ocean, and as a nation consumes 7.5 million tonnes of seafood annually. CITATION
I just want you to stop and think about what you just saw for a moment. You are a 10 ton Minke Whale just swimming like any other day, when suddenly there is an excruciating pain in your side. You start to panic and pull away from the pain but that just makes it worse. After painstakingly struggling for some time you start feeling slicing pain through your body. Hundreds more stab and attack your skin until you choke on your own blood and eventually die. You are hauled onto a vessel carrying more just like you, most probably to be from your own pod. You bleed even more and are sliced up into small pieces to sell in mass produces of meat to eat. But you shouldn’t worry at all! These inhumane killing sprees are only for research to understand more about how other human impacts are killing whales such as noise pollution and oil pollution. It’s perfectly normal to kill thousands of whales just to see how we can help them! WRONG! Over 500 southern pacific Minke whales experienced this in just one year, and hundreds of other species of whales did too, including endangered species like the Fin whale.
