In The Diversity of Life, Edward O. Wilson reflects on how the living world became diverse and how humans are destroying that diversity. In the book’s preface, Wilson defines biodiversity as “the totality of inherited variation in all organisms in a selected area” (Wilson ix). He adds that modern technology will allow for us to find many new species that were previously unknown to be in existence.
The first section of the book is titled “Violent Nature, Resilient Life.” In the beginning of this section, Wilson recalls one of his trips to the Amazon rainforest, during which an electric thunderstorm in the middle of the night created an incredible display of biodiversity. He says that he has kept going back to this area for almost forty years, as the amount of diversity there almost guarantees that he will discover new species upon each visit. Wilson then states the importance of biodiversity: “It is diversity by which life builds and saturates the rain forest. And diversity has carried life beyond, to the harshest environments on Earth” (Wilson 11). He later adds that biodiversity is the key to the survival of the world as we know it. In order to back up these claims, he cites Krakatau, an island near Indonesia that was bombarded by a series of volcanic eruptions in 1883. Although much of the life seemed to disappear at the time, it soon grew back, and today there are not many visible clues that a disturbance of that magnitude ever occurred. Wilson does seem to think that we are going in a somewhat right direction, and he acknowledges that scientists have discovered many species in the time between the two publishings of his book. However, he asserts that although modern technology has given us a better shot at finding more species, the combined level of effort being put forth by humans is too low to make enough of an impact. The tone that Wilson uses throughout the main part of the book is very similar to the one he uses in the updated preface, meaning that his opinions have not really changed since the original printing. This is good evidence to support the idea that The Diversity of Life is still a relevant text, as his tone would likely have been noticeably different had the movement completely changed gears.
Throughout history race has been a pivotal part in decision making. Since the first interaction of populations from different geographical regions, with physical differences, the assumption has been that these differences were fundamental. These physical differences, based mainly on the color of skin, have been classified as race. Over time physicians have tried to pinpoint certain characteristics that are more prominent in one race than another, in order to prove race and that there are subspecies of humans. One of the first examples of this is Johann Blumenbach work “On the Natural Variety of Mankind”. In his work Blumenbach introduced five categories of race; caucasian. mongolian, malayan ethiopian, and american. These classifications revolved around not only skin color, but also physical morphology. Blumenbach supported this by using a collection of physical evidence, like the structure of the cranium, to support his thesis. It’s going, going, gone. It’s a homerun! Strike one, strike two, strike three he’s out! These are the main things that go on in the incredible novel, The Natural. We start off with hearing about a nineteen year old, Roy Hobbs, baseball superstar getting shot in a shooting accident which damaged his career. Then we skip to the failing New York Knights who just moved up a thirty- four year old ballplayer, Roy Hobbs, signed for only $3,000, Roy eventually becomes a mega superstar after the death of the old team superstar, Bump Bailey. Roy ends up falling in love with Bump’s old girlfriend, Memo Paris. Roy goes through a slump and one game a girl stand up for him in the stands when no one else would. Roy hit a homerun to end his dry spell. He likes this girl, Iris Lemon, but not more than Memo. Roy pleads with the owner of the team, the Judge, for more money. The Judge says no, but tells Roy if he throws away the game to win the pennant he will give him $35,000. Roy agrees, but in the end tries to win the game back failing miserably. He strikes out after breaking the only bat he was good with, Wonderboy. After the game he meets the Judge, and throws the money in his face. They fight, and eventually Roy is seen as a loser for throwing the game. In the novel, The Natural, by Bernard Malamud the author conveys that decisions made through selfishness and without consent of a moral code lead to major consequences in one’s life.
The inspiring documentary film, E.O. Wilson—Of Ants and Men, showcases biologist Edward Osborne Wilson’s passion for preserving the biodiversity of our natural world. E.O. Wilson not only values the fascinating creatures (particularly ants) that he comes across during his research and in his daily life, but he also takes action and participates in the Gorongosa Restoration Project at Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, Africa. The destruction of Gorongosa demonstrates the call for us—Homo sapiens—to realize how critical it is to concern ourselves with protecting the very ecosystems that have molded us into the complex species that we are; according to E.O. Wilson, “We adapted over millions of years to wild environments…We really need them” (CITE?). Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.
Long-term survival of a species depends on its ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions (Murphy, 1994). Genetic diversity within a species, which has taken 3.5 billion years to evolve, makes adaptations to these changing environments possible. Unfortunately, the rate of extinction of genetically diverse organisms is rapidly increasing, thus reducing this needed biodiversity, largely due to the human impacts of development and expansion. What was an average of one extinction per year before is now one extinction per hour and extinct species numbers are expected to reach approximately one million by the year 2000 (WWW site, Bio 65). As a result governmental and societal action must be taken immediately!

== = = Human beings are dependent on the Earth's diversity of species for our survival. Wild species play a vital role in the maintenance of the planets ecological functions, yet everyday on the planet 40-100 species become extinct.
Diversity is a value that shows respect for the differences and similarities of age, sex, culture, ethnicity, beliefs and much more. Having a diverse organization, helps notice the value in other people and also how to teach respect to people that might not know how. The world is filled with different cultures and people that might believe in different things as you, but that doesn’t mean you need to treat them any different. It is imperative for people to grasp diversity because it’ll help people how to engage with others in a respectful yet a hospitable way.
Its purpose is so much bigger than just its presence and ability to make the world a more unique place. Its necessary for the survival of humanity as a whole. “As a source of exchange, innovation and creativity, cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature (“Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity”)”. This means that diversity is needed for the continued exchange of ideas to allow the steady developments consistent with the world today. An example of this would be the people of the rainforests, such as the Tiriyo people of Suriname, that are slowly trickling away. These people have a vast knowledge of plants in the Amazon that are used for medical drugs today. There are still so many other plants whose uses have not been discovered yet. The continued destruction of the rainforests destroys these undiscovered plants as well. The people of rainforest have knowledge passed down for centuries that is slowly dying out with them and the decades of people to come will never have this knowledge (Murray, Topic 10). The world relies on constant innovation for its growing population and demands. Cultures around the world are the sources for this continued innovation. People living in different environments with different needs and varying backgrounds are all responsible for the different tools and inventions that are used today.
