For a long time, scientists have been researching about DNA and its structures. DNA is strongly related to genetics and how living things perform. Two very intelligent scientists, James Watson and Francis Crick, have made history in Biochemistry when they discovered the structure of DNA. The central idea of this paper is researching the history of DNA structure discovery and about why it is very important. Discovery of DNA structure is very important because DNA is what makes all living things behave the way they do and studying DNA also means learning why living things act this way. James Watson and Francis Crick were the two main scientists who discovered the double helix, the main structure of DNA. Two other scientists, named Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins, also helped and contributed along with James Watson and Francis Crick. However, they weren’t as famous because many people believed that they didn’t play as big of a role in the discovery. These scientists were trying to discover the structure of DNA. Their first discovery was the double helix, and Friedrich Miescher, a swiss chemist, discovered “nuclein” inside nuclei of white blood cells, which its name later changed to nucleic acid and then deoxyribonucleic acid, and abbreviated as DNA. Phoebus Levene, a Russian biochemist, discovered the makeup of nucleotides (phosphate and sugar bases) and all the different parts of both DNA (deoxyribose) and RNA (ribose). James Watson and Francis Crick used this information to determine how all of this DNA was made up and formed. They found that the basic molecule of DNA is called the double helix, and how each of the parts of the double helix were connected (the sugar-phosphate bases acted as the sides of the ladder or the stair rails and the nitrogen bases were the steps) and how they each were arranged. They also discovered about the four nitrogen bases, their shapes, and how you can re-organize them in different orders, but due to their shapes, A and T must be connected to each other and the same goes for G and C. DNA was discovered in the 1800s by various scientists, but James Watson and Francis Crick didn’t determine what the structure of DNA was until 1953. The book Rosalind Franklin and DNA is a biography of Rosalind Franklin written by a British journalist and close friend of hers, Anne Sayre to reveal the true personality of Rosalind Franklin in contradiction to the fallacious character portrayed by James Watson in his personal account of The Double Helix. This book was undertaken to refute Franklin’s distorted portrait from abnormal feminist into rational, perfectionist and talented ‘women’ scientist. She begins by introducing her strong background, curious childhood, dedicated education, generous nature and most importantly how she was brought up in a favorable environment of distinctive Angelo-Jewish family, who identified and cultivated her talents and developed her in a person with full capacity for commitment. The following is a review of the book, The Double Helix, by James D. Watson that was published in 1968. Here the Norton Critical Edition will be used for page numbering and insights for this review, which was edited by Gunter S. Stent and published in 1980. The Double Helix is a personal recollection of the period of time when the structure of DNA was discovered. James D. Watson (Watson) along with Francis Crick (Crick) were the two scientists who published a paper in 1953 which purposed a structure for DNA. For the most part their structure has stood the test of time, and since that time period many people have wanted to know details of how they discovered DNA’s structure (pp. 3). Therefore Watson’s purpose in writing the book was to describe his personal view of the events that lead to discovery of DNA’s three-dimensional structure, when they happened in 1952-53. He is well qualified to give an account of these things, for he was there in the middle of everything; he was one of the main players. In order to describe the events, apart from his sharp memory, Watson used letters he wrote to his family to help him remember dates and details, as well as suggestions from his associates who reviewed his manuscript. Watson was born April 6, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois where he attended Horace Mann Grammar School followed by South Shore High School. At the age of 15 Watson, received a scholarship to the University of Chicago where he received his Bachelors of Science in Zoology; in 1950, he attended Indiana University where he then received his Ph.D. in Zoology. It was during Watsons graduate studies where he worked on X-rays on bacteriophage multiplication with geneticist T.M.
The Double Helix tells a tale of fierce competition, perseverance, and scientific innovation as we follow James Watson and his cohort Francis Crick on their quest to discover the secret to life, the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid. Although already fascinated with DNA, Watson struggled with finding chemistry exciting enough to learn it in depth. He had studied birds in college and thereby managed to avoid any formal chemistry or physics courses. As he later pursued a PhD in biochemistry, he realized he could put it off no longer and attempted to learn organic chemistry at Indiana University. However, after a mishap in the lab, he was encouraged instead to study nucleic acid chemistry with Herman Kalckar in Copenhagen. There, his mind strayed from his work and he began doing unauthorized research in the lab of Ole Maaløe, studying phages. Herman stopped teaching Watson after going through a divorce with his wife, and sent Watson off to a scientific conference in Naples. Although he was bored by many of the lectures, Maurice Wilkins’s talk about X-ray diffraction fascinated Watson. He was struck by an X-ray diffraction picture of DNA that Maurice presented and was determined to study the acid. He later got to know more about Maurice’s colleague, Rosalind Franklin, who was proud, stubborn, and very difficult to work with. Watson greatly admired the lecture given by the renowned Linus Pauling, who had discovered the structure of the alpha-helix and was thought of as the leader in DNA research in the scientific world.

I call these ideas/theories “new” based on what I classify the state of the scientific community of today. After looking at what is going on in science, it is clear to me that the scientific world is in a crisis state. According to Kuhn, a crisis state is when science is in the middle of choosing a particular paradigm to work under. For scientists, there is a general theme or way of thinking which constitutes how they conduct their work and how they analyze their results. Kuhn goes to great measures to classify this scenario as paradigm. In chapter two of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions Kuhn states “(paradigms)...provide models from which spring particular coherent traditions of scientific research,” (p.10). If this is what scientists agree upon as paradigm then it is obvious that science is in a crisis state. At the present time, scientific explanations vary depending on what part of science is being explored.
Science and Technology has been around from the beginning of time. It evolved from the everyday efforts of people trying to improve their way of life. Science can be further divided into three separate categories; Pure, Applied and Natural Sciences. In addition technology is often defined as applied science, it is simply the application of scientific knowledge to achieve a specific human purpose, however, historical evidence suggests technology is a product of science.
