White-Collar Crime versus Blue-Collar Crime
Many crimes can be categorized into two categories, White-collar and Blue-collar crimes. Is there really a big difference between these two categories, are they race, gender or social class specific? White-collar and blue-collar crimes both break the law but some are perceived more vicious than others but are punished with less time in jail. Some think that this has to do with who the majority of the people commit the crimes, where they live and how much money they have or make. White-collar crimes are perceivably committed by upper-class and blue-collar crimes are committed by middle to lower-class citizens. Unlike white-collar crimes, these crimes most likely do consist of violence and bodily harm for example, murder, armed robbery, rape, domestic and drug abuse, and home invasion. These crimes can be against a person or property and are crimes of passion and opportunity.
White-collar crimes are crimes that take great planning, time and skills. These crimes can last for long periods of time and can go undetected for many years, if at all. People who commit these crimes are of the upper-class and usually commit these crimes at their place of work. They are both male and female and most often Fund managers, Stockbrokers, Office workers and Telemarketers. They have access to files and client accounts and use their position to mislead their clients and/or co-workers and are able to hide the deceit and theft well. As for blue-collar crime, these crimes are of opportunity, the spur of the moment, get in and get out crime. They are rarely planned and well thought out, most of the time also for financial gain. Blue-collar crimes are more violent then white-collar crimes. These crimes are most likely committed by low income/no income
