Motivation is vital to any organization. Dr. Beckwith (2016) describes motivation as, “a desire to achieve a goal, combined with the energy to work towards that goal.” In other words, motivation is the ability to harness a person’s internal drive to accomplish set goals. Volunteers and employees share common motivational needs, such as a desire to be recognized, feel appreciated, and engage in satisfying work. The difference between volunteers and employees is manifested in how the shared motivational needs are fulfilled. Volunteers, like employees, desire to be properly recognized for their achievements. Unlike employees, who may expect a raise or a promotion, volunteers expect other forms of recognition, such as a gift card or an award. Volunteers understand working for a non-profit entail that extra money can be scarce. As a result, volunteers are not driven by monetary gain for their achievements. Volunteers are motivated by a deep desire to achieve for the betterment of the non-profit. Dr. Jim McCorkle (2011) asserts, “Intrinsic motivation must be present if people are to do their best.” The basis of McCorkle’s assertion is that volunteers must be driven internally to accomplish the organization’s goals. Non-Profit organizations are a major mold in society in general, and they continue to help advance many of the social causes of our time. From the description, we know that employee and volunteer morale is quite low, and that is the fault of the senior management. In an organization, it is important that each individual knows that they are contributing to something larger than themselves. Acknowledging the importance of non-profit organizations in my life is easily done because of the unforgettable experiences had at a local organization and the impression it left on my life. As by taking part in a local non-profit organization, my mother and I were able to embark on a medical mission trip to Romania in 2006 and 2007. We set out to simply love and grow into a culture of people we knew nothing of, but yet still being drawn together by an awesome God and His mission for us as a people. Devoting our time and love, we also aided many in need with medical necessities: taking their blood pressure, addressing any problems they may have, and relinquishing all medicines that may be needed. Through my experiences, I’ve found that many non-profit organizations work to assist a multitude of hurting individuals through various methods of relief and invoke the initiation of volunteers into action. Although countless individuals have faced negative issues while being a part of such an organization, it is to be said that none can truly fathom the value of a non-profit organization that upholds dedication to the people it may serve, by way of various methods that provide great relief.

I saw in Egypt a city full of dirt and debris cleaning itself up; a city whose citizens became full of pride to say that they are from Alexandria and a city that is changing. Throughout this course my paradigms of what a nonprofit organization have been challenged as we have considered the major aspects and leadership challenges of these organizations. Having worked with for profit and nonprofit organizations in the past I was quite confident that I had a clear understanding of the distinctions between the two. I had worked in organizations that regularly used volunteers to accomplish their mission and felt that the management of these processes were simplistic. Despite these misconceptions, I found that I was able to learn a tremendous amount through our reading, peer interactions, group projects and equally important, my volunteer service as part of this course.
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. The Grace Church administrative team’s leadership is seen utilizing this practice relatively often. When tasks are completed quickly and fast, participants will be verbally praised. The leadership also shares with the team that they are an invaluable part of the organization though not often appreciated. As a result, the leadership works to create a culture of appreciation within the team.
A well-implemented employee recognition and rewards program has the power to impact many aspects of business from morale, to productivity, engagement, and even retention. A non-existent, poorly-designed employee recognition program can have the opposite effect such as decrease in motivation, decrease in productivity, and more employee turnovers (The Guide, 2017). High employee turnover happens when employees are not content with their jobs. Employees that are dissatisfied with their job feel unappreciated and taken for granted and well seek another job that can fulfill their needs. An employee recognition program can reduce employee turnover, improve team culture, and increase performance because employees are being recognized and treated with respect and appreciated for their good performance (Mayhew, n.d).
However, according to Chapman (YYYY), 88% of employees leave for reasons other than money, most often it is psychologically motivated. If team members do not feel appreciated and a valuable asset to the team, they are more likely to seek employment elsewhere.
