Most of the people mistake organic food for natural foods. To some extent this is acceptable as both the organic and natural foods benefit us and are considered to be the same. But in real these terms organic food and natural food are two different terms. Organic in short is a label for food and other agricultural products which are produced by the methods that put together the cultural, biological and mechanical practices, under the approval of United State Department of Agriculture (USDA). The term organic refers not only the food but also the way it was produced and it must meet the regulations of USDA. USDA has set standards for organic foods which mark the difference between the organic foods and natural foods. In the production of organic …show more content…
The basic difference between organic foods and natural foods lie in the label. The label organic means that it is free from harmful heavy metals which are used during the production of food. There are some criteria for organic foods to be labelled as organic foods. They must be grown in the conditions labelled by USDA. Synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides must not be used. Toxic persistent pesticides, genetically modified food, antibiotics, growth hormones and sludge and irradiation are all prohibited according to the standards set by USDA. Whereas the advantages of using organic foods are animal welfare requirements, cows required to be on pasture for pasture season, lower levels of environmental pollution, audit trail from farm to table, certification and inspection for proper follow of rules and legal restrictions on allowable materials. Organic foods are more beneficial to humans as well as the environment. The organic label promises the costumers no toxic pesticides, no synthetic growth hormones, no petroleum based fertilizers, no cloning, no artificial colors or flavors and no genetically modification in their food. Organic foods are …show more content…
Converting a natural farm into an organic farm is a multi-year process. To have the organic certification by USDA, it must be proven that no prohibited materials have been used in the field for at least 3 years. Organic agriculturists are required to keep up buffer zones between organic farmland and contiguous potential sources of water, substance or hereditary float to keep their yields from being spoiled by actions made on close-by farms. Organic farmers may not offer harvests developed in buffer zones as organic. These are some common organic food practices; Crop rotation, manure, compost, green manure utilization, cover cropping, avoidance of synthetic fertilizers, avoidance of synthetic pesticides, buffer areas and planting habitat corridors so that biodiversity is enhanced. Organic cultivating polishes might move forward soil and water quality. Essential soil functions for example, water-holding capacity, soil microbial activity, and nutrient cycling which are strongly influenced by the structure of soil especially the level with which it forms soil aggregates. Aggregates and the pore spaces within them are key components of the soil microbial habitat. The measure of aggregates influences soil air circulation and drainage. Over the top culturing and the
A gene used for pest control, Bt, has infected these foods. You would never know this gene existed because it’s not included in the label. Organic foods are specifically labeled as organic whenever you may find them at a grocery store or elsewhere. These foods are known as being essentially grown in healthy soil, in other words, a soil that isn’t infected with poisonous, synthetic fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, or fungicides. Although organic foods are more expensive, it is only the result from the frequent crop rotations completed by the farmers during long, hot hours under the sun. Conventional farming methods destroy topsoil whereas organic farming can improve the overall health of the topsoil. Farmers who partake in organic farming view it as feeding the soil and not the plants. Due to this thinking method, a healthy soil provides healthy plants, healthy people and a healthy environment. Organic farming has the ability to feed an entire population and put an end to starvation. The dangerous pesticides that are added with conventional farming are outdated and risky to mankind. Relying on synthetic fertilizers and chemicals are paralyzing our
Organic food is produce untreated with pesticides, fertilizers or bioengineering. The truth is that all produce that consumers purchase from their local supermarkets has been treated or chemically altered in some way, shape or form. Edwin Marty, founder of Jones Valley Urban Farm Alabama, states that even local farms, including his own, are prompted by local and state agencies to use conventional agricultural solutions which require soil fertilizers, etc, making the produce not organic like most consumers may think. (http://www.pbs.org/food/features/lexicon-of-sustainability-local-vs-organic/) Organic food can be purchased at local farms however a consumer must be willing to have a face certification with the owner of their local farm. This means establishing a connection with the farmer, learning their growing and agricultural practices to form a trust over the organic quality of their
Organic refers to the way agricultural products, food and fiber, are grown and processed. “It is an ecological system that at its core relies on a healthy rich soil to produce strong plants that resist pests and diseases. Organic farming prohibits the use of toxic and persistent chemicals in favor of more “earth-friendly” practices that work in harmony with nature. In the case of livestock, antibiotics are prohibited, opting instead for preventative measures for keeping animals healthy and productive. Organic production also prohibits the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s).” (Ameriorganic) To find organic products one must only look for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) seal. The seal certifies the product must be 95%
They like it the organic way because of the healthier conditions. Organic has less salt and more vitamin C and E, which is pretty good for you. Another reason people would rather eat organic foods is because it's also shown that pesticides are partly responsible for increasing cancer rates and birth defects among children and organic farming methods avoid using these chemicals and rely on the natural method to control crops, which is healthier and better for our future. Examples of these methods are crop rotation, where farmers plant different crops every year and it disrupts the life cycle of pests and provides a natural fertilizer. Organic farmers also use natural fertilizers such as sulfur and they also use interplanting methods that alternate crops in the field, which helps stop pests from
For some reason all a product needs is a little sticker that says organic, and people automatically believe that it is healthier. No one ever stops to ask what this sticker means. Instead they just trust that organic is healthier than the produce that is being sprayed with chemicals. The rise of organic food has created an illusion that organic food is healthier and has nutritional benefits that exceed those of conventional food products.
Growing organic has less of a risk than growing with hydroponics. Hydroponics can help human kinds existence on earth but as of now it is hurting humans. Hydroponics can one day be a very helpful resource but it still needs a lot of work to get to that point. Growing organic has little to no risk and also helps your health and weight. Eating healthy can help you lose weight which will increase your health! Growing organic allows you to know what goes in your body at all times. No chemicals or pesticides go into growing organic which allow you, as the consumer, to know what goes in you body at all time. Hydroponic is a new study that will improve in the future but for now we will just stick to organic. Scientist are still exploring and discovering ways to make hydroponics better and healthier for humans but as of now we should stick to organic food, But it's YOUR
With the world’s population continuing to increase, the demand for food is higher than ever. This increase in food demand also calls for more efficient ways of growing and providing the food. Two methods that are very controversial are the organic and conventional method. While many people support the organic method because of its known benefits, others feel that it is an over inflated industry that cheats consumers out of their money. But recently many studies have disproved those critics. These studies prove that Organic food is a better choice than conventional because it is better for the environment, avoids the use of chemicals, and is generally more beneficial.
Lyman (1998) explained that organic farmers in the past had to pay attention to details. Such details are: what plant they were growing so that the soil would get the nitrogen naturally, leaving the field fallow once every few years so that moisture can be restored to the soil, ways to raise the animal so that they do not overgraze the land, and work with nature and not against it (p. 85). The work of traditional organic farming is very labor intensive and the product is not always profitable. Lyman explained that the uses of chemicals made farming easier because he can buy fertilizer in bulk and put it into the soil. The fertilizer helps increase grass growth, which also increases the size of the cows, providing the farmer with greater profit.
Sup Point B: Organic food is different from conventional food in several ways. Organic food uses natural resources like manure and compost in to enrich the soil where food is being grown. Any form of chemicals such as pesticides are not permitted to be used in any form. Organic farmers use crop rotation to preserve the soil. Organic farmersdo not ...
Organic gardening helps to prevent a loss of topsoil, water pollution, toxic runoff, and soil contamination, death of insects, birds, critters and other beneficial soil organisms, as well as eliminating pesticide, herbicide, and fungicide residues on food from synthetic fertilizers.
For years organic farmers and conventional farmers have feuded over which is superior. Organic farmers argue that their product is more eco-friendly because they do not use the synthetic chemicals and fertilizers conventional farmer’s use. Conventional farmers argue that their product is healthier and yields more. People tend to have stereotypes regarding the two types of farmers. Organic farmers are usually thought of as liberal, hippy, tree-huggers while conventional farmers are usually thought of as right-wing, industrialists. Obviously, some do adhere to this stereotype, but a majority of these farmers are normal, hardworking people. Although these farmers, both believe in their methods, one is no better than the other. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but there is no true superior method of crop farming.
Food has been a common source of necessity in our everyday lives as humans. It helps gives us nutrition and energy to live throughout our life. Over several decades, the development of making foods has evolved. They have changed from natural to processed foods in recent years. Nowadays natural ingredients are barely used in the making of foods like bread, cheese, or yogurt. The food industry today has replaced natural food making with inorganic ingredients. The cause of this switch is due to processed foods being easier, cheaper and faster to make. Artificial nutrition and processed foods have been proven to last longer in market shelves then natural foods. Also, due to artificial additives in processed foods they help satisfy consumers taste more than natural ingredients. The method of producing processed foods is common in today's food industry and helps make money faster and efficiently for companies. Examples of this can be found in all markets that distribute food. Even though processed foods may be easier and faster to make, they are nowhere near as healthy for consumers compared to natural foods. Natural foods are healthier, wholesome, and beneficial to the human body and planet then processed foods.
A study of 362 datasets found that organic agriculture produces 80% of conventional yield with 21% standard deviation (Tomek et al. 2012). Second, organic farming requires less energy input which equates to less money spend from the farmers in addition to lowering carbon emissions. A study by the Department of Environment shows that organic agriculture uses 25 percent less than energy than their chemical counterparts, and certain crops like organic leeks and broccoli use 58 and 49 percent less, respectively (Bialis et al. 2013). Third, organic farming does not use pesticides. According to the World Health Center, 20,000 people die annually from the exposure of pesticides (Costa et al. 2014). Fourth, the methods that organic farmers use are better for the environment in the long run. And lastly, organic farming creates more jobs. A study done in United Kingdom shows 93,000 jobs could be created if Britain were to make a full scale shift to organic farming (Herro 2006). Although conventional agriculture is the primary producer for food currently, a large scale shift to organic agriculture is better suited to feed the world because organic agriculture can produce at adequate yield, requires less energy input, do not use
Organic food is food that is grown without any pesticide or fertilizers. In recent years, sales for organic foods are increasing every year. A lot of people go to supermarkets in order to buy some organic foods, because they think that organic foods are healthier than conventional foods. People purchase organic foods for different reasons such as personal health, the quality of organic foods, and taste, but the most important reason is personal health. The topic that whether organic foods have more benefits or not is very controversial for a long time. Maybe some people believe that organic foods are beneficial to human health, but some other people disagree with the viewpoint, so buying organic foods depend on people’s choices. People believe organic foods are healthier because they generally think organic foods have less pesticide and fertilizer residue, more nutritional values, and are beneficial to environment.
Organic farming has mushroomed drastically in importance and influence worldwide from its modest beginnings in the first half of the last century. Organic farming is production of food and livestock without the use of herbicides, pesticides, weedicides, fertilizers or genetically modified organism and use natural resources such as manure and compost instead. In other words, it is a production system which maintains the quality of soil ecosystem as well as human beings. According to IOWA State University, “the chemicals were not used for farming before World War 2. A number of munitions used in farming have contributed to field of agriculture. For instance, ammonium nitrate used as ammonium nitrate fertilizer”.
