Introduction

The story of Harry Potter amazed a whole generation of not only children, but also adults, and still does. Rowling’s series, tells the story of Harry Potter and his fight against Lord Voldemort, which takes place in the world of magic. The difference between Harry Potter and Lord Volde-mort is explained by Dumbledore at the end of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone using the following words: „’If there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love. He didn’t realise that love as powerful as your mother’s for you leaves its own mark. Not a scar, no visible sign...to have been loved so deeply [...] will give us some protection for ever.’“ (Rowling 216). He protects the weak, is remarkably altruistic and is even willing to sacrifice himself for the welfare of the whole world of the wizards, which is described as „[...] the crowning apotheosis of the series.“ (Caetano 114).
Despite Severus Snape is not acting for charity’s sake for the most of the story and murders Dumbledore, we learn that he is a ‚good’ character. „Snape is motivated by his profound and lasting love Lily, Harry’s mother.“ (McDougal 161). Due to this love, Snape follows Dumbledors order, kills him and becomes the hero of the story. Severus’ last name, Snape, represents exactly the symbolic dualism between ‚good’ and ‚evil’.
Lord Voldemort represents ‚evil’ throughout the series. The Dark Lord is even compared with Hitler (Wente 89). Voldemort’s wish for immortality and will to reach the reign over the magical world through terror, can also be read in his name ‚Voldemort’ (Croft 159). The lack of human emotions such as sympathy and compassion, his selfish acts, and the fact that he is unrepentant concerning the numerous people he kills, lead to the conclusion that Lord Voldemort represents ‚evil’ regarding Christian
