Today’s society has gradually transformed to a more technology driven environment. Many people choose to communicate using electronic devices opposed to more old-fashioned means such as letter writing. In the book, Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology, author Neil Postman described how he believes technology is the reason today’s society and culture is deteriorating. I have read several articles the provide examples and different insights on how technology contributed to the change in society. In the article, Technology in Today’s Classroom: Are You a Tech-Savvy Teacher, written by Stephanie Hicks, she describes how technology has contributed towards a productive learning environment in the classroom. Another article named Development of a Portable Embedded Patient Monitoring System, written by Jungmuk, Sungil and Dongik, states that the development of the portable monitoring system, an electronic device, aids with patient care in today’s society. In addition those articles, authors Sumayya Syed and Abu Nurullah wrote an article, Use of Mobile Phones and the Social Lives of Urban Adolescents: A Review of Literature, illustrates how cellular phones with today’s means of communication, especially within the teenagers. In spite of Postman’s theory that technology is negatively affecting society, technology contributes to the development of society by improving education skills, medical practices and means of communication.

He proves that there are a lot of in-car technologies in today’s society that can demand our full attention without us even knowing, and can lead to tremendous consequences that can become dangerous distractions on the road. Satellite navigation (GPS) makes our lives easier because it can give us the correct directions to the desired address. This is unlike the past where the navigationally challenged would consider it a nightmare to drive to a new location. Furthermore, there are many upsides that technology brings to students by presenting new ways of learning where technology is being used in the classroom. Within the article “Cell phones in schools pros and cons” presented by Rujuta Borkar, the advantages of having a cellular phone device in school are through emergency contact, and having a cell phone for security purposes.
The opinions of many people vary on technology and the effects it has on today’s society. Some say that it’s more beneficial than anything, others completely disagree, and some have mixed emotions. Would you rather read out of a book, or play online learning games with a possible risk of eye problems? It’s about taking matters into your own hands. 71% of people believe technology has improved their lives. 76% of people completely disagree by saying that technology creates a lazy society and that is distracting and corrupting. Daily life with technology is also another huge issue in society. According to a survey taken in January 2013, people feel their work productivity has dropped 8% in the last year. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.
Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
It is interesting to note that an article written in 2003 discussed text messaging as a young adult phenomenon. It addressed the difficulty of older fingers using tiny keyboards (Lacoheé 206). Things have changed. Text messaging is used by young and old alike today. Interestingly, other predictions in the article, which was written over ten years ago, still haven’t happened yet such as video tattoos and smart make-up and perfume (Lacoheé 209).What is clear is that we are living in a world that is ever-changing and with those changes come implications for how we behave as individuals and as a society. Does cell-phone enabled easy access to information on the internet hinder our quest for knowledge or enhance it? In our schools, does it make our students lazy or more efficient? Does our ability to bury ourselves in our phones enhance our communication with each other or isolate ourselves from each other? Whether we consider our “advances” in mobile technology as steps forward or steps back still remains to be
