In The Los Angeles Times, Meredith Blake states, “Because human nature is complicated, human nature has multiple layers.” Merriam-Webster defines it simply as human nature, but what seems simple on the surface often hides a deeper complexity. Just as if an animal is born in the wild, and embodies their surroundings, that environment shapes a child raised in a world of destruction, they become a “destructor.” This is shown in the short story “The Destructors” by Graham Greene, as he breaks down the dark side of civilization and its impact on human behavior, especially the young. “The Destructors” takes place in London after World War II, it is centered around a group of adolescent boys who make up the “Wormsley Common Gang.” The gang's main focus was organizing schemes to achieve mischievous goals, This deliberate act …show more content…

His father was once an architect who fell on hard times that led them to a lower class, which explains Trevor's cold demeanor toward destroying the house. Unlike Mike, whose gullibility drives his participation, Trevor is filled with deep-rooted bitterness. His choice to tear down Mr. Thomas’s home is driven by anger, as it constantly reminds him of what he lost. He wasn’t looking to vandalize; he wanted to tear down the essence of what the house represents. When the boys found the money and one suggested stealing it, Trevor said no and instead, they all took turns burning it. That’s a great amount of resentment for someone so young to bear. It showed his hate towards anything that showed beauty or normalcy. Trevor doesn’t lead like a thug; he leads with a certain swag that the other boys weren’t used to seeing and that drew them in. He sees the destruction of the house as a way of imposing order in a world stripped of war.
