In today’s society, if you ask a random person if he or she has a social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc. most likely the answer will be yes. Users upload their personal information online to communicate and inform friends and families about their life, but what they fail to know is how large of a scale that data is watched under surveillance. Corporate companies and government officials are part of the group that uses other people’s information for their own purpose. Computer users are constantly watched whenever they search the Internet. Nothing is left unseen on the worldwide web. It is a violation of privacy if Social Media like Facebook, Twitter, and even the government to conduct a procedure on private information that users put on their profiles willingly for their own cause.
Social Media Websites such as Facebook and Twitter sell users’ information from their profiles to third parties organizations; even the government collects information to keep an eye on the United States, mostly for criminal activity. In today’s world, the act of privacy is broken, especially when it involves the Internet; plus, the government gathers information from online sources to keep an eye on everything. There must be more laws to enforce the activity of third parties selling people’s personal information. Collecting and using people’s data for the government and corporate companies’ use breaks the 1st Amendment when the data is being taken from Social Media Websites. Also, without laws to enforce the act of privacy the big corporate companies and the government work together to gain too much power that America will break away from their foundation of freedom.

It is not a technological problem, it is a legal problem. In the Facebook & Your Privacy, the author point out that "In the U.S. online privacy laws are weaker than those of Europe and much of the world, so you have few federal rights to see and control most of the information that social networks collect about you."(Facebook & Your Privacy) I find numerous legal cases of Facebook privacy issue in the European Unions, however, I only find several cases in the US. Social media companies have complete control a their users information and can do what they want with it. Now if those companies went spreading the information, no one would use their sites but they can make changes to privacy setting that make it easier for anyone to view information of other users. For example, Facebook has privacy settings so your information is not out for public viewing, but a while back they changed the default privacy setting to make all your information viewable to the public unless you changed it. The one thing that we as humans do is make mistakes .Without us knowing it, we unintentionally do things that might harm others and ourselves.Social media is the culprit in view of the fact that our society falls into this trap of who has the most likes,followers, etc. We post things that we shouldn't have which in fact will have a domino effect .
The government gives each American citizen a set of unalienable rights that protect them from the government’s power. These rights cannot be broken, yet the government violates the Fourth Amendment daily to find ways to spy on the American public under the guise of protecting against terrorism. In 2007 President Obama said the American administration “acts like violating civil liberties is the way to enhance our securities – it is not.” Americans need to understand that their privacy is worth the fight. The people need to tell their neighbors, their congressmen, and their senators that they will not allow their internet privacy to be violated by needless spying. American citizens deserve the rights given to them and need to fight for the right to keep them by changing privacy laws to include Internet privacy.

Millions of people resent the government for being somewhat of a Big Brother, making accusations of spyware programs and hacking, supposedly regulating our every move, yet freely share exceedingly personal information publicly. It has become common practice to post about your family members, location, phone number, email address, workplace, political affiliations and so much more, reaching far beyond the simple question “what are you doing now?”. Although many sites like Twitter and Instagram have a delete button, your postings are in actuality never erased permanently, but instead are gone from your so-called timeline. The 21st century has brought a lot of modern ideas, innovations, and technology. One of these is social media. The invention of Facebook has completely changed the way we communicate with one another. Instant messaging, photo sharing, and joining online groups have created a way for families and friends to connect. Some argue that Facebook is the greatest invention however, while it is seemingly harmless, Facebook has created an invasion of privacy. The accessibility of Facebook and its widespread use has created privacy problems for users, teens, and interviewees by allowing easy control to viewers.
Perhaps the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, said it best when he claimed that privacy is no longer a “social norm.” Virtually everyone has a smart phone and everyone has social media. We continue to disclose private information willingly and the private information we’re not disclosing willingly is being extracted from our accounts anyway. Technology certainly makes these things possible. However, there is an urgent need to make laws and regulations to protect against the stuff we’re not personally disclosing. It’s unsettling to think we are living in 1984 in the 21st century.
