Dehumanization of Prostitution

Because we agree with the statement by Arthur Schopenhauer, a German philosopher, my partner and I reject the resolution that prostitution should be decriminalization.
We offer the following two reasons to support our side. Prostitution is very unsafe and is demeaning to women and men.
Our first reason is that prostitution is a very unsafe practice for women and men. Glenna Matthews, from an American Women’s History article, stated:

There are many different types of sex workers, for example there are brothel workers, street walkers, and call girls (Fuchs, Erin). Street workers are the ones that are the most exploited and exposed to rough and dangerous working conditions (Fuchs, Erin). They make next to nothing and the money that is made is often taken by pimps or traffickers (Sullivan, Barbara). This group of workers are also more likely to be drug addicted than the other form of sex workers. They also experience more physical violence and are more likely to be murdered. There are many different opinions on the legalization of prostitution and many “meet-in-the-middle” compromises, however, in a “black and white” sense, there are generally two directly opposing views in terms of the legalization/ decriminalization of prostitution. In an article entitled “Should Prostitution be Legalized”, both of the opposing views are addressed. Dianne Post stands against the legalization of prostitution and argues things such as equality and human rights, respecting the voice of women, and the right to be entitled to “decent” work. Arguing against Post’s points is Bishakha Datta. Datta responds to Post’s argumentative focuses by making the same claims, but with counterpoints supporting her belief that prostitution should indeed be legalized. As stated above, however, there can be that grey area where compromises can be made and a perspective can be formed with respect to both sides of the argument.
As a conclusion, I think prostitution could be tolerated but not culturally accepted. Every one has different perspectives about life and how we should act, but we should respect the way people think as we like others to respect the way each of us think.
If prostitution were made legal, there would be certain laws to prevent the abuse of prostitutes while on the job. The basic rights of any American citizen are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. By keeping the profession illegal, prostitutes are not able to pursue happiness and live their lives freely. The government is infringing on the basic rights of a human being. Legalizing prostitution has benefits not only for the prostitute, but also for the population. There would be a reduction in sex crimes, American citizens would have the freedom to choose any profession within the sex industry and it would provide economic benefits for the local and federal governments, as well as the population.
Although many may oppose, there are many benefits sex workers can thrive off, in order to help them survive in today’s society. One of the central arguments for the legalization of prostitution is that through state regulation, prostitution minimizes the health and safety ricks of both prostitutes and their clients. According to the Encyclopedia of Women in Today’s World, by participating in a paid sexual encounter with a nonmonogamous partner, prostitutes and their clients are putting their health and safety at risk (Dewey, 2011). Such risks include sexually transmitted infections that cannot be avoided with the use of condoms, specifically, HIV/AIDS. Although condoms are encouraged, prostitutes and their clients may be restricted by control of a third party including pimp.
Prostitution is considered to be the oldest profession in the world. Many people support the idea of legalizing prostitution, while others do not. This controversial debate has been ongoing since the beginning of time. I desire to take a stand on the value of human worth, which is why I oppose the legalization of prostitution between consenting adults in our State.

Where this agreement usually ends, however, in on the question of prostitution being legalized. Whereas some are convinced that it should be legalized, others maintain that it should remain illegal. The benefits for the legalization of prostitution outweigh the benefits for prostitution remaining illegal in the United States. In Robert Trapp’s book entitled, “The Database Book: A Must-have Guide for Successful Debate”, he explains that prostitution has existed throughout history in all cultures and that the government needs to recognize that prostitution will not disappear. The exploitation of prostitution is considered to be one of a serious global issue in most of the countries around the world. Also, the number of prostitution is increasing tremendously each year and seems to be more serious than the past centuries. Prostitution is the act of selling ones body for any type of sexual intercourse in exchange for money. Today, both men and women are willingly and forcefully engaged into the industry of sex and prostitution. It is most common for young teenage girls to be involved into this industry rather than a male or older woman. There are several different ways to how individuals are first brought into prostitution. One way is to be kidnapped and forcefully put on to the streets by a "Guerilla Pimp". "Guerilla Pimps" are the men who use their ability and force to kidnap young girls and throw them on to the streets to work as prostitutes (Youth Radio). Another way to be introduced to prostitution is by being persuaded by "Romeo Pimps". "Romeo Pimps" are the men who sweet talk you into situations and act like nothing is wrong with it (Youth Radio).
Second, prostitution is a great health risk to the U.S. because of the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). A major concern about STDs is the spread of AIDS, which is currently a deadly STD because a cure has not been found for the disease. The transmission of STDs is already on the rise due to many uneducated teenagers having unprotected sex. In addition, most of theses teens are not going to a physician to be screened for STDs. Because of this, many curable STDs are going untreated and being spread throughout a community.
