Introduction The term of self-actualization was first introduced to the modern psychological concept by Kurt Goldstein in 1934 and then edited by Abraham Maslow to give the first definition of the self-actualization. Self-actualization is similar to some concepts such as self-exploration, self-discovery, self-realization and self-reflection. According to Kurt Goldstein, self-actualization is the trend to actualize the capacity of the individuals in the world as much as possible. The only drive which determine the life of the organism is the tendency towards self-actualization. According to Maslow, self-actualization can be utilized to describe the full realization of the potential of the person. 2. Be honest in your choices Think of life as a series of choices, one after another. If you are being truthful with yourself as you make your choices, then you are on the way to being self-actualized. 3. Personally, I don’t believe that me as a person has reached self-actualization. I think I’m somewhere around the esteem needs. I have fulfilled the physiological needs by having food, water, shelter, etc. The safety needs are met by safety from attacks and disease. The third hierarchy is fulfilled by affection from family and friends. The esteem need is half way met but not completely.
No one else can be your true self they can just influence how you turn out to be. Throughout life, we can miss out on the factors that make up your true self. Everyone true self is different, but we each share a piece of our true self. For example, you can listen to your parents or not when finding who you truly are. Who you are is an internal factor and we are affected by external factors in the world. We are writing the definition of ourselves which always includes others. In owning myself, you can say that doing your own thing or finding your own fulfillment is being true to yourself (53). When talking to someone you are reasoning with someone to decide who to be. People make up who you are for you, not the other way around. The people closest to us shape what we like, what we do, and who we are through our language. Everything about our language is who we are to how we speak and who we speak to. This language can be verbal and non-verbal. The language we are introduced to is by someone else through our conversations we are changed ourselves. George Herbert mead called these significant others (53). You can not achieve it on you own, but through our language, we become the things that make us who we are. Similarly to the SDT, there is a set of needs that must be met before self-actualization can occur. The hierarchy of needs is shaped like a pyramid with 5 levels, physiological needs, safety needs, love/belonging needs, esteem needs, and finally self-actualization. The physiological level includes the need for food, water, and oxygen. The safety need refers to shelter and security. The love and belongingness level refers to the human need for companionship, interaction, and includes romantic love. Esteem needs involve the self, confidence, and respect of and by others. Finally self-actualization refers to creativity, spontaneity, acceptance, problem solving, and other things that involve high-level thinking and acceptance of oneself, and the world around them. Self-actualization is referred to as “the realization of individual potential” (Maclagan 2003) and is not a state that everyone is able to reach. Actually, according to Goldstein, to say one achieved self-actualization would technically be incorrect. Unlike the others, self-actualization isn’t a need that can be fulfilled, but rather a drive. The most important aspect of determining your idea of personal fulfillment is you. You must ask yourself, “Why am I here?” What do you believe is your purpose in life? Many people live several years and make many wrong decisions before they truly realize what is right for them. Others may never realize their true potential. An individual’s highest desires are not true personal fulfillment. Owning a mansion and driving a Rolls Royce after becoming a celebrity is personal fulfillment as portrayed by society and the media. However, this is not your idea of personal fulfillment. You must accept the fact that these materialistic things have nothing to do with being content in life. By assessing your talents, acquisitions, and potential, you will be able to achieve your individual goal.
The reason I believe this is an assumption is due to the fact that humans are not the same. Some may want to reach their full potential, but others might feel as though they have already reached their full potential and have no need to improve or grow. While on the other hand, there are some that do not believe that they will ever reach their full potential due to their lack of self-worth and value in themselves. When a baby is born, that baby knows nothing except for the fact that they are there and they are surrounded by people who love and care for them. In the womb, each and every individual is just a bundle of physical creation, but the very second we are born it is our job to find out who we are. Life is described by some to be an epic journey of self-discovery and actualization, and that’s exactly what it is. Self-actualization is the term used to describe how individuals go their whole lives trying to reach their full potential. Now, what does this mean to an individual? Being self-actualized means that an individual knows who they are and what they want and what they were made for, and generally this notion is thought to make for a happier, more fulfilled person in the long run. It takes many ups, downs, trials, and tribulations for one to become self-actualized, but once they reach that point, they are considered to have grasped at the holy grail of life itself.
Mastering one’s self is essential in reaching one’s full potential. In this paper I will attempt to articulate what it means to achieve personal mastery. I will first provide my own personal portrayal of personal mastery. Following, I will illustrate examples from my life, and what personal mastery means to me.
